Kishan's story — from giving up cricket to finding success in bowling

The Hindu02-05-2025
R. Kishan gave up his cricket dreams to carve out a name for himself in a less popular sport, bowling.
His decision has paid dividends, as Kishan — one of the nation's top bowlers — won the first South Zone Tenpin bowling tournament in Bangalore on Thursday.
''Everyone plays cricket. I wanted to try something new,' Bengaluru lad Kishan told The Hindu after his title win.
What started as a way to pass time after missing tuition classes soon turned into a serious passion, ultimately leading him to represent India in the prestigious Asian Games and 2025 IBF World Cup.
His start in bowling came when Kishan casually entered a local tournament at the age of 16. Much to his surprise, he finished in the top six. Impressed by his raw skills, state-level bowlers encouraged him to participate in State-level tournaments.
The turning point came when Australian coach Andrew Crowley noticed his potential. Under Crowley's mentorship, Kishan adopted the two-handed O'Campo technique, resembling the style of three-time PBA World Championship winner, Jason Belmonte.
The shift in technique helped Kishan secure many State and National titles. He went to represent India at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, and won podium finishes in international tournaments in Hong Kong and the Philippines.
He also finished a creditable ninth at the Bowling World Cup. Being a student at the time, Kishan had to make a difficult choice between academics and his passion. 'I didn't get permission to attend any more bowling tournaments after 2019, so I just quit my university,' the 25-year-old said.
The lack of support from educational institutions is still is a sour memory for Kishan, but he believes that things are changing now.
Today, Kishan balances his career in construction with his love for bowling. 'Before, I only used to bowl. Now I have to work. I am trying to pursue full-time bowling for sure. But before that, I have to settle my career.
'If I really need to make it big in the bowling field, I have to travel a lot and play only international contests to make enough money. I get calls from youngsters asking if I can teach them. That keeps the fire alive,' Kishan said.
Kishan strongly believes that more awareness and tournaments, especially for women, can take the sport further in India. 'In this tournament, we had 85 men and just nine women. That needs to change.
'I hope to see more amateur events and better representation in India. Half of the people of this nation do not even know that something like bowling exists. Small regional tournaments are necessary to create awareness,' he said.

Motor racing-Brown hails McLaren's 200th win as close to perfect

By Alan Baldwin HT Image BUDAPEST, Aug 3 (Reuters) - McLaren boss Zak Brown hailed the team's 200th Formula One win, with Lando Norris ahead of championship leader Oscar Piastri in a one-two finish in Hungary on Sunday, as close to perfect. The win was Norris's fifth of the season and McLaren's seventh one-two in 14 races as well as the team's fourth in a row. "You're never perfect in a race but I think that was as close to perfect as you can get," Brown told Sky Sports television. "The drivers were awesome, pit stops amazing, strategy was great to get Lando up there, Oscar drove brilliantly. I couldn't be prouder of this racing team." Norris and Piastri crossed the finish line 0.698 of a second apart, with the pair almost touching when the Australian tried to make a move on his British teammate on the penultimate lap and locked up. Team principal Andrea Stella said it had been 'firm' racing but also fair between rivals now separated by just nine points. "We had a bit of a lock-up with Oscar but at the same time Lando left some space because he knew that Oscar would have been at the limit of braking," said the Italian. "We keep being very proud of our Lando and Oscar for racing. I think this is a great way of honouring Formula One racing. These are the value of McLaren." Despite celebrating his ninth career win, Norris said he needed to improve because he was making life too hard for himself. He won from third on the grid, after dropping to fifth at the start and then making a one-stop strategy work with Piastri on two. "It's going to be a good and tough battle probably until the end. It takes a lot out of you trying to focus so much for every single session, race, everything. So, it's going be a long second half of the season, I'm sure," he said. "There are those things I need to improve on and want to improve on. I'm not giving myself the best opportunities. Even though the results have looked great, I'm not making my life very easy for myself at the minute. "So if I can work on those things, then I'll be in a better place." McLaren are only the second team to chalk up 200 grand prix wins since the world championship started in 1950. Ferrari, yet to win this season, are on 248. Mercedes, next after McLaren, have 130. Antim, Manisha shine at World Wrestling Championships trials; Vaishanvi has a breakthrough day to remember

It was an easy day for Paris Olympian Antim Panghal, who faced no resistance from her competitors in the 53kg category trials on Sunday at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium and booked her berth for the World Wrestling Championships. Already a World Championship medallist with bronze in the last edition, Antim went past Pooja in the semi-finals, dominating the bout and her 'fitle' move resulting in injury to her opponent. In the final, Antim was the superior wrestler and defeated Hinaben to ensure her participation at the tournament for the second time. Coming on the back of two Ranking Series wins, Antim is expected to be one of the seeded Indian wrestlers at the World Championships. The 20-year-old Antim will be hoping for some redemption after her controversial participation at the Olympics last year, where she got in trouble for misusing her accreditation after her early exit from the event. Antim admitted making 'mistakes' but insisted it was just a case of confusion in Paris. 'The federation did not have any issue with me. There was confusion, I also made mistake. I did not realise that it was getting out of hand. Olympics is different from Asian Games and World Championships. I did not know much,' she told reporters. 'There was a Games village, which was also there at the Asian Games but we had stayed at a hotel in the Asian Games (Hangzhou), there was confusion, I had never experienced such an environment. There was pressure and I spoilt my bouts due to that. Then I was asked to be at the camp. The federation has been helpful, I was sent to two tournaments where I won gold.' Antim added. Recently crowned Asian Champion Manisha Bhanwala was one of the two wrestlers in the 62 kg category and defeated Mansi Ahlawat 2-1 in the final to book her berth. In the 68 kg category Nisha Dahiya, was in action, but her return from injury (sustained during an Paris Olympics bout against Park Sol Gum) was cut short in the first round by Radhika, the eventual winner of the category Ankush won in the 50 kg category while Priya Malik overcame a stiff challenge from seasoned Kiran in the 76 kg category. The headliner of the day was Vaishnavi Patil of Maharashtra, who overcame years of falling short in the trials to achieve her first major breakthrough. The 65kg class, Vaishnavi first overcame Freedom Yadav in a bout where she trailed 0-4 but went on to win 10-6. She then defeated Haryana's Muskan 7-2 to seal her ticket. 'I am processing it right now. I have been constantly coming for trials, but I always miss out on the final berth. This feels like all of my hard work is finally paying off. However, this is just the start, and I have to win many more such matches,' Vaishnavi, who was ecstatic and almost breathless due to all the photo-op after her win, told the Indian Express on the sidelines. The selected Indian wrestlers will participate at the World Championships scheduled from 13th to 21st September in Zagreb, Croatia. The grapplers will be part of a camp organized 15 days ahead of the tournemant in Croatia, Wrestling Federation of India President Sanjay Singh confirmed. 50 kg: Ankush, 53 kg: Antim, 55 kg: Nishu, 57 kg: Tapasya, 59 kg: Neha, 62 kg: Manisha Bhanwala, 65 kg: Vaishnavi Patil, 68 kg: Radhika, 72 kg: Jyoti Berwal, 76 kg: Priya Malik
