(Reuters) -Cristiano Ronaldo preferred to take a rest rather than play in the revamped Club World Cup, the Portuguese international said on Saturday after renewing his contract with Al-Nassr.
The Saudi Pro League club announced on Thursday that Ronaldo had signed a two-year contract which would keep him at the club past his 42nd birthday.
Speculation over the 40-year-old's plans intensified last month when FIFA President Gianni Infantino said discussions were underway about Ronaldo playing in the Club World Cup, despite Al-Nassr failing to qualify.
"I had some offers to play in the World Cup but I think it didn't make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long as it is the World Cup season at the end of the year," Ronaldo said in a video posted by Al-Nassr on X.
"I want to be ready not only for Al-Nassr but also for the national team. So, this is why I decided to play the last game for the Nations League and not listen to anything," he added.
"And of course, to be in this club, which I love".
Ronaldo scored for Portugal in the Nations League final against Spain earlier this month which ended 2-2 before his side went on to beat the European champions on penalties.
The Portugal captain said his aim in staying at Al-Nassr was to win a major trophy with the Riyadh-based side.
"My goal, it's always to win something important for Al-Nassr. And of course I still believe in that" Ronaldo added.
"This is why I renewed the two years more because I believe that I will be a champion in Saudi Arabia".
Ronaldo, who joined Al-Nassr in 2022 after leaving Manchester United as a free agent, has scored 93 goals in 105 appearances for them in all competitions.
Ronaldo is also eyeing the 1,000-goal milestone in his career. He has scored 794 goals in club football and 138 for Portugal to take his tally to 932.

Luis Enrique: Beating Messi's Miami ‘harder than it looked' despite PSG rout

ATLANTA, June 30 — Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique said defeating Lionel Messi and Inter Miami on Sunday was trickier than it seemed despite the French side's 4-0 Club World Cup last 16 triumph. Joao Neves' early strike sent PSG ahead and then they scored three more in a flurry before half-time to take an unassailable lead. Former PSG and Barcelona star Messi impressed in the second half as Miami battled well but could not find a way through. 'It is difficult to play against players of this calibre, it was difficult, but I think as a team we did an excellent job,' Luis Enrique told reporters. 'There's a visible difference between the first and second halves... their quality is evident, and I think we deserved the victory. 'It was harder than it may seem, after the first half.' The Spanish coach said his PSG team, who won the Champions League, Ligue 1 and the French Cup to claim their first ever treble, are in spectacular form and are hoping to triumph in the United States. 'Clearly, we are experiencing a historic season for our club, we aim to go far in this competition,' continued Luis Enrique. 'We are in the quarter-finals, with only eight teams remaining. Our goal is to progress as far as possible and to compete for the trophy. But for that, we need to overcome two more knock-out rounds. 'The season is very long, as it is for all teams, but the motivation to be competitive is there.' PSG winger Ousmane Dembele said he was 'glad to see' Messi and his former Barcelona team-mates Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano. 'Leo is a unique person, to share a game with him was magnificent, I was a kid watching his magic on the television, so it's unique,' said PSG defender Lucas Beraldo. 'Reality' hits Inter Miami coach Mascherano said he was pleased with his team's performance at the tournament despite their eventual thrashing by PSG. 'We achieved the goal we had set for ourselves, we were very aware that we could compete up to a certain level, and today reality has shown that,' Mascherano told reporters. 'I am very proud of my players, of the work they did in the competition (...) we tried to show in each match what we could do. The gap is what it is, but I am very proud of them.' Mascherano said his Argentine compatriot Messi was able to show his quality despite the defeat. 'I think Leo played a great game, within the options we had. In the second half, we found him much more. In the first half, we couldn't due to Paris's pressure,' said the coach. 'They slowed their tempo in the second half, and we were able to show what we usually do in MLS (Major League Soccer).' Despite PSG being arguably the best team in the world at the moment, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta was filled with Inter Miami shirts, mostly with eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi's number 10 on the back. 'PSG is in great form, champions of everything, but people still pay for a ticket to see Leo Messi, even at 38 years old,' added Mascherano. — AFP

Kane double fires Bayern past Flamengo into Club World Cup showdown with PSG

MIAMI, June 30 — Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich tamed Flamengo 4-2 in a tense affair at the Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday to set up a much-anticipated all-European quarter-final against Paris St Germain at the Club World Cup. Erick Pulgar's own goal opened the scoring for Bayern and Leon Goretzka was also on target for the German side, while Flamengo, who were defensively naive, twice reduced the deficit through Gerson and Jorginho. Backed by a raucous crowd, Flamengo played with aggression but Bayern converted all their shots on target and reaped the rewards of a fast start, scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes. 'It was tough. We were playing against a really good side in difficult conditions, it was really hot,' Kane said. 'I thought we played well for large spells but every time we got away they clawed their way back and made it difficult. The fourth goal was important to ease the nerves and from there we managed it well.' Earlier on Sunday, Champions League winners PSG sent a brutal reminder of their firepower when they cruised past Inter Miami 4-0, taking their foot off the pedal after the break in what could have turned into a humiliation for Lionel Messi's MLS team. Bayern got off to a flying start, opening the scoring in the sixth minute when Pulgar deflected a corner kick into his own net. Three minutes later, Kane doubled the advantage with a low shot that went in off the post. Flamengo got into something of a groove and went close in the 15th minute, only for Manuel Neuer to save Luiz Araujo's effort from point-blank range. Shortly after the cooling break, the Brazilian side pulled one back as Gerson fired a missile that went in off the underside of the bar, triggering a deafening roar from the crowd. Bayern, however, restored their two-goal lead before the interval when Goretzka, capitalising on the space left by the Flamengo defence, whipped a shot from outside the box past keeper Agustin Rossi. Tempers flared after a poor challenge by Pulgar on Kane as Flamengo struggled to contain their frustration. Filipe Luis's side pulled one back again 10 minutes into the second half, Jorginho sending Neuer the wrong way after they were awarded a penalty for a Michael Olise handball. The momentum had swung and Flamengo threatened with quick breaks, but Bayern held firm before finding the back of the net once more through Kane, who beat Rossi with another clinical low shot in the 73rd minute. — Reuters

PSG thrash Messi's Miami as Bayern set up Club World Cup blockbuster

ATLANTA, June 30 — Paris Saint-Germain steamrollered Lionel Messi's Inter Miami 4-0 to reach the Club World Cup quarter-finals on Sunday, where they will face Bayern Munich after they overcame a spirited Flamengo side. The German giants defeated the Brazilians 4-2 in Sunday's other last 16 clash with a brace from Harry Kane, after the European champions proved far too strong for Miami's cast of ageing stars. Miami hoped Messi's magic could help them produce an unlikely result against the Argentine star's former club, but the Major League Soccer side were dismantled by Luis Enrique's rampant team. Messi and his former Barcelona team-mates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba had done well to reach the last 16 but the gulf in quality between the teams was laid bare in Atlanta. Joao Neves netted twice for PSG, who benefited from a Tomas Aviles own goal, while Achraf Hakimi was also on target for the treble-winners. 'Clearly, we are experiencing a historic season for our club, we aim to go far in this competition,' said Luis Enrique. Messi was the main draw, as fans chanted his name and most of the 66,000 crowd were clad in Miami's hot pink, interspersed with Argentina shirts. PSG dominated from the start and took the lead when Neves nodded in unmarked at the back post from a free-kick. With the Ligue 1 champions pressing high and keeping possession Javier Mascherano's Miami found it hard to get Messi involved. The 38-year-old's intermittent interventions were not enough to hold back the Parisian tide. PSG doubled their lead in the 39th minute when veteran holding midfielder Busquets got his footwork wrong, with Ruiz stealing the ball and combining with Barcola to set up Neves again. 'He played a very good game... in this team everyone can score and make decisive contributions,' said Dembele. Aviles then deflected Desire Doue's cross into his own net, and Hakimi netted the fourth before half-time to put PSG out of sight. Eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi produced a brilliant pass for Suarez early in the second half, but the Uruguayan could not finish to offer Miami a lifeline. Despite the impossibility of a comeback Messi seemed determined to bow out with a bang. When Suarez was fouled on the edge of the box Messi had the chance to repeat his free-kick winner against Porto in the group stage, but his effort hit the wall. Luis Enrique sent on winger Ousmane Dembele for his first appearance at the tournament after a hamstring injury, but the Frenchman looked rusty and PSG could not expand their advantage. Miami's second-half performance was respectable and the defeat was by a lesser margin than the French side's 5-0 Champions League final thrashing of Inter Milan. 'I think we were above the expectations people had for us (at the tournament)... obviously we were facing the best team in the world playing football right now, so it was difficult,' said Alba. Bayern 'can beat anyone' Kane produced two lethal finishes as Bayern beat out Filipe Luis' Flamengo side backed by a passionate following at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. 'It's going to be another tough game — PSG have had an amazing season,' said England international Kane. 'We played them earlier in the year and we came out on top. 'We know it's going to be difficult but we can beat anyone when we're at our level, we've shown that in the tournament so far.' Erick Pulgar headed Joshua Kimmich's corner into his own net and then Kane's deflected drive flew into the bottom corner as Bayern took a two-goal lead. The three-times Copa Libertadores champions battled back in as Gerson smashed a shot past Manuel Neuer to delight most of the 61,000 crowd. Leon Goretzka restored Bayern's lead but former Chelsea midfielder Jorginho pegged them back once more from the penalty spot. Kane settled the contest with a fine touch and finish to set up the quarter-final clash against PSG. 'We have to rest now, recover from this game, use every single day we've got to rebuild our energy,' said Bayern coach Vincent Kompany. 'Then what more do you want? Top top sides playing each other on the biggest stage — we'll be ready for that.' — AFP
