Expert names exact date to sell or part-exchange your car before 'boiling point'

UK motorists considering flogging or part-exchanging their vehicles have been urged to act swiftly to cash in on heightened demand and competitive prices - but there's not long left
Brits thinking of selling their car have been urged to act quickly - or risk losing out on sky-high profits.

A car finance expert has revealed the best time to sell or part-exchange your car to secure a substantially better deal. According to inside analysis, the used car market is right on the cusp of reaching peak demand, so owners have a brief window to maximise their returns before sales conditions cool off after reaching the 'boiling point'.

Motor Finance Expert at Ocean Finance, Lorna Macpherson, pinpointed this month as the optimal moment to act. So, if you've been thinking about upgrading or getting some extra cash for your current vehicle, she suggests now is the best opportunity to benefit from heightened buyer interest and increased offers.

In a statement sent to the Mirror, the expert said: "July is one of the strongest months for selling or part-exchanging. There's more demand for cars during the summer, especially from families getting ready for holidays or young drivers preparing for university in the autumn.
"That pushes prices up, especially for fuel-efficient or family-friendly cars, and mid-July is when that demand really peaks. If you're planning to switch or cash in, I'd aim for Saturday, July 19. Waiting until later in the year could mean a lower offer and less money in your pocket."

Pricing fluctuations in the used car market are influenced by a number of factors, including consumer demand, availability of stock and broader economic conditions. Right now, these factors are aligning to create a strong seller's market, but such favourable conditions may not last much longer.
Delaying the decision to sell or part-exchange could mean buyers lose interest or shift their focus elsewhere, particularly as we move towards the end of the summer and run-up to new vehicle registration in September — when the new 75 plate arrives. Lorna's advice serves as a timely warning for those postponing their decision.

Acting on or before Saturday, July 19 not only increases the chances of getting a quicker sale, it could also add hundreds of pounds to the price. For drivers looking to optimise the value of their vehicles, carefully timing the sale is crucial — those who wait too long risk missing out.

MP Angus MacDonald raised a written question in parliament, enquiring whether the DWP had evaluated "the potential impact of data surveillance on recipients of Universal Credit". ‌ In his response, DWP minister Andrew Western clarified: "No assessment has been made as the DWP does not currently or have any plans to use data surveillance to regulate, police or monitor the actions of individuals or groups in receipt of benefits." ‌ However despite these assurances, legislation is progressing through parliament that would empower DWP investigators with new authority to access banking information, including that of Universal Credit recipients, reports the Mirror. ‌ The proposed measures aim to curb errors and fraud within the benefit system by enabling officials to demand that banks disclose details about the accounts of benefit recipients, such as those on Universal Credit, Employment and Support Allowance, and Pension Credit. This data will be utilised to verify the eligibility of benefit recipients for their payments. There's potential for these powers to extend to other benefits as well. ‌ The bill also proposes provisions for officials to directly withdraw funds from an individual's bank account if they owe money to the DWP and are not cooperating with repayment demands. In cases where these powers are used, investigators will need to request a minimum of three months' bank statements for the relevant account, to ensure the individual has sufficient funds. The person must receive at least 28 days' notice to provide them an opportunity to clear the debt before money is withdrawn from their account. ‌ MPs have recently passed a bill to implement significant changes to Universal Credit payments. The law will ensure that the standard allowance increases at least in line with inflation each year, from 2026/27 to 2029/30. However, there will be reductions to the additional amounts you can receive if you have a health condition that impacts your capacity to work. They've just been released and, to my mind, reveal crucially important buying trends that indicate the new direction of travel among paying customers in the UK. Like never before, buyers appear to be deserting some traditional brands and countries, and gravitating towards alternative car makers and vehicle-producing nations. Border authorities have also been blocking further imports An urgent recall has been issued for a ceiling fan sold on Amazon amid fears it could give users electric shocks. ‌ The A-Faction856 Ceiling Fan, made in China, is the product in question, and customers are being urged to stop using it immediately. Border officials have stepped in to halt further imports of the item. ‌ The specific product codes affected are FBA15JYLVF9HU000040 and X0027BDFWD, reports the Mirror. ‌ The Office for Product Safety and Standards has warned: "The product presents a high risk of electric shock as it has inadequate insulation and insufficient creepage and clearance distance between the mains potential input circuit and low voltage output circuits." They added: "Over time, the insulation can wear down and expose live wires which may result in the user receiving an electric shock. The product does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016." ‌ Customers who have purchased these fans should get in touch with Amazon to discuss refunds. This recall comes on the heels of another critical safety notice last month concerning certain Citroën C3 and DS3 models.
