Paul Finebaum names Texas school as 'most corrupt program' in CFB history

During ACC media days, SMU Mustangs head coach Rhett Lashlee made some controverisal comments about the SEC being a top heavy conference.
"The SEC has had the same six schools win the championship since 1964," said Lashlee. "Not a single one has been different since 1964. That's top-heavy to me. That's not depth."
Lashlee's comments are trending topic in today's college football world. Many fans and members of the media disagree with Lashlee. It is undeniable that the SEC is the top conference in college football. The SEC recruits the best and has produced the most NFL draft picks of any conference for 19 straight years. Current members of the SEC have won 14 of the last 20 national championships even though the Big Ten has won two straight national titles.
We frankly don't even understand Lashlee's argument. Eight different members of the current SEC (includes Oklahoma and Texas) have won national championships since 2000. During the same time period, only three different ACC teams won national championships.
In response, ESPN's Paul Finebaum has a couple of words for the Mustangs' head coach.
"In 1987, they (SMU) shut down their football program," said Finebaum in response to Lashlee. "When he is making fun of the SEC of winning national championships. SMU is the most corrupt program in the history of college football."
What Finebaum is talking about with the year 1987 is the SMU program was shut down due to paying players to play for their team in previous years during the 1980's when it was prohibited. SMU faced the death penalty (did not play any games in 1987) and it took the Mustangs years to recover.
In the new era of college football with name, image and likeness (NIL), Texas programs are among the most aggressive in the country with NIL money. Texas Tech, Texas and Texas A&M have all spent massive amounts of NIL funds to secure top recruits. However, SMU should not be forgotten in the NIL era. The Mustangs took advantage of their move to the ACC and made the College Football Playoff during the first year of the 12-team era.
The comments will most likely be a reason for comparing the ACC to other Power Four conferences, including the SEC, to see which conferences are performing the best this upcoming season.

LeBron James and Maverick Carter were seen with Nikola Jokic's agent

There has been a lot of talk lately that LeBron James, one way or another, is on his way out as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and that they will look to essentially replace him with another superstar within the next couple of years. The belief is that the Lakers will try to go after either Giannis Antetokounmpo or Nikola Jokić next summer or during the summer of 2027. They reportedly want to keep a lot of salary cap space free for that purpose, which has led some to feel that they will essentially punt the next season or two and not try to win the NBA championship during that time. On his Instagram account, Misko Raznatovic, Jokic's agent, posted a photo of him with James and James' business manager, Maverick Carter, along with a cryptic caption. 'The summer of 2025 is the perfect time to make big plans for the fall of 2026!' This will undoubtedly spark speculation about James' future beyond the next handful of months. There have already been many rumors that he will eventually ask the Lakers to trade him soon, even though he exercised his player option for the 2025-26 season. Jokic, the three-time NBA MVP, who many still feel is the best basketball player in the world, can opt out of his current contract in the 2027 offseason. He just became the third player in league history to average a triple-double for an entire season, but he lost out on the 2024-25 regular-season MVP award to the Oklahoma City Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Big Ten Network personality Jake Butt picks teams for 2025 Big Ten title game

Another Big Ten football media days is in the books, and now we can focus our attention towards the start of fall camp and the buildup to the start of the 2025 college football season. Ohio State will be defending its College Football Playoff national championship and will look to add a couple of goals it missed out on last season -- winning the Big Ten and beating Michigan. That's not as easy as it used to be with the addition of former Pac-12 schools from the West Coast -- Oregon, Washington, UCLA, and USC-- and with Michigan and Penn State rising up to become national powers as well. The Big Ten has closed the gap on the SEC and created one of its own as the best conference in the country, and it should be another fantastic season in 2025. So, who has the advantage in making the Big Ten Championship game? Ohio State and Penn State are expected to be the best teams this year according to most of the media, but that's not what Jake Butt from the Big Ten Network thinks. In a segment on social media, Butt provided his picks for teams that will play in Indianapolis, and he omitted Ohio State, picking Penn State to tussle with Oregon instead. It's all opinion, of course, and it's not like the Ducks aren't a program to reckon with almost annually now, so there's that. But Butt not identifying his alma mater, Michigan or the Buckeyes, is an interesting take, especially considering Oregon lost as much talent as OSU. But never fear Ohio State fans, Butt did mention Ohio State as one of the teams that will contend for a College Football Playoff spot -- so there's at least that. Ohio State defending its title and having a shot at a conference crown will largely depend on the production it gets at the quarterback spot and how well the defense plugs some of those gaps lost to the NFL. It won't take long to see how those questions are answered because the Buckeyes open up against Texas in Week 1. Let the countdown continue. Nick Saban shares humorous response to coaching return rumor

For the first time since the rumor was shared during SEC media days, former Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban has publicly commented on his potential interest in returning to coaching. In a recent television appearance on Fox News' Fox and Friends, Saban was asked in an interview the question as to if he would ever return to the sidelines again. Saban, in response, appeared to shut down speculation on a potential return, while also giving a humorous answer. "I never really ever had a thought about getting back into coaching, until two days ago Mrs. Terry said I had to run the sweeper in the entire downstairs," Saban said. "While running the sweeper, the thought occurred to me," When you were coaching, you had a heck of a lot better job than this. That is only time I considered it." "There is no opportunity that I know of right now, that would enhance me to go back to coaching." Saban also later added. Saban, who announced his retirement back in Jan. 2024, was the head coach at Alabama for 17 seasons from 2007-23, winning six national championships during that span. As the head coach at Alabama, Saban also compiled a 206-29 overall record, recorded 16 10-win seasons, and won nine SEC championships. Since announcing his retirement, Saban has remained around college football, most notably through his role on ESPN's weekly show "College GameDay." As to if Saban would ever return, the answer certainly appears unlikely in the near future.
