Falcons secondary receives mid ranking from Pro Football Focus
If the Atlanta Falcons hope to return to the playoffs in 2025, they need to become more consistent on defense. Last season, the team had a chance to clinch the NFC South with two games left to play.
The Falcons nearly upset the Washington Commanders in Week 17, but their defense couldn't get a stop when it mattered. The following week, Atlanta turned in another disastrous defensive performance against Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers, giving up 44 points in an overtime loss to close out the season.
While most analysts will rightfully point to the pass rush as the team's biggest issue, the secondary also had its share of issues. Atlanta finished 22nd in the league in passing yards allowed per game (224.5), and 17th in interceptions recorded (12 total).
With limited funds, the Falcons did what they could to upgrade their secondary. The team signed veteran safety Jordan Fuller in free agency, re-signed cornerbacks Mike Hughes and Dee Alford, and drafted defensive backs Xavier Watts and Billy Bowman.
It's hard to say whether or not this unit will be better, but the team arguably has more depth and talent in the secondary. Pro Football Focus ranked all 32 NFL secondaries ahead of the 2025 season. Atlanta landed in the middle of the pack at No. 17 on PFF's list:

The Falcons have two cornerstone pieces in safety Jessie Bates and cornerback A.J. Terrell, and they added several players this offseason to bolster the rest of the secondary. Jordan Fuller was signed, and Atlanta selected Xavier Watts in the third round of the draft to strengthen the safety spot opposite Bates. Despite being ranked in the bottom half of the NFL, the Falcons secondary was still the highest-ranked unit in the NFC South. The New Orleans Saints (No. 20), the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (No. 22) and the Carolina Panthers (No. 30) were listed below Atlanta by PFF.
The Falcons did not re-sign safety Justin Simmons, but the former Pro Bowler didn't have his best season. While Simmons is still a free agent, Fuller was probably a better option for a team low on cap space.
Watts and Fuller should have a nice training camp battle for the starting safety job next to Jessie Bates. The Falcons report to training camp in roughly two weeks, with their first practice coming on July 24.

Free agent S Quandre Diggs fully healthy, cleared to play
Free agent safety Quandre Diggs is fully healthy and cleared to play in 2025, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports. Diggs had his 2024 season cut short with a Lisfranc injury on Nov. 3, which required surgery on his foot to repair. He spent last season in Tennessee, signing with the Titans last August, five months after the Seahawks released him. Diggs started the first eight games of the season, totaling 42 tackles. The Lions made Diggs a sixth-round pick in 2015, and he has appeared in 145 games with 120 starts. He has recorded 24 interceptions with 56 passes defensed and five forced fumbles. The three-time Pro Bowler had started every possible game the four previous seasons before his injury last season.

Tyrann Mathieu announces his retirement
The Honey Badger is calling it a career. Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu has formally announced his retirement on Tuesday in a social media post. 'As I hang up my cleats, I'm filled with gratitude as I close this chapter of my life and officially retire from the game that's shaped me in every way,' Mathieu wrote. 'From my first snap in college to my final play in the NFL, this journey has been nothing short of a blessing. Football gave me purpose, discipline, and memories that will stay with me forever. But more than anything, it gave me a community. 'To every coach who believed in me, every teammate who battled beside me, and every fan who showed up, cheered, and rode with me through the highs and lows, thank you. You gave me strength when I needed it most, and your love carried me farther than I ever imagined. 'I hope I made you proud out there. This isn't goodbye — it's just the next chapter.' Mathieu, 33, had re-worked his contract to stay with the Saints earlier this offseason. But now, he's elected to pass on that opportunity. 'We had a little advance notice on that, so it wasn't like we were surprised today,' Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis said in his Tuesday press conference. 'I'm a little surprised, but we had some advance notice. Just have so much respect for Tyrann and what he's accomplished. He's a legendary Louisiana player, legendary NFL player. Really appreciate his time with us. He was fantastic. And I don't have enough good things to say about him — a lot of good things to say about him. What a great career and just wish him all the best.' Loomis added he thought this just came up in the last few days and didn't make an effort to talk Mathieu out of it. 'I just think he's one of those guys who commands respect by his actions, his deeds,' Loomis added. 'He's got a great message. He's very thoughtful, intelligent, super smart player. About all the right things on the football field and his experiences in life. He's just fantastic.' A Cardinals third-round pick in 2013 after playing his college ball at LSU, Mathieu played his first five seasons with Arizona before signing with Houston as a free agent. He then signed with the Chiefs in 2019, helping propel the club to a Super Bowl victory over the 49ers as a first-team All-Pro. He was again an All-Pro in 2020, as the Chiefs won a second consecutive AFC title. Mathieu made his way back to Louisiana in 2022, signing with the Saints in free agency. He started all 17 games for New Orleans over the last three seasons, recording 10 interceptions and 24 passes defensed for the franchise. In all, Mathieu appeared in 180 career games with 171 starts. He finishes as a three-time All-Pro and a three-time Pro Bowler with 36 interceptions, 100 passes defensed, seven forced fumbles, eight fumble recoveries, and 11.0 sacks.
