Decatur Youth Services to host Sneaker Ball on Friday

Yahoo12-06-2025
Jun. 12—Decatur Youth Services will host a Sneaker Ball for middle- and high school -age kids on Friday, in part as an effort to make sure those that couldn't afford their prom or other school dances make it to a similar event.
Attendees at the DYS Sneaker Ball will dress up in formal attire and sneakers and eat and dance in the gym at the Aquadome from 7 to 9 p.m.
Administrator Lemzel Johnson will act as a DJ for the event, said DYS Girls-2-Women mentoring coordinator Asa Taylor.
All youths of the Girls-2-Women and the Boys-2-Men mentoring programs at DYS were invited and given the opportunity to invite two friends as well.
Taylor has received a few dresses that were donated by friends and hopes to ensure every attendee has a nice outfit to wear.
DYS wanted to host the Sneaker Ball for those who could not attend the ones at their school, Taylor said.
"I am the coordinator of Girls-2-Women and they had mentioned that some of them weren't able to go to the (event) at their school because they couldn't afford it, so we were trying to make it happen for them and their friends, so they wanted to open it up to their friends," Taylor said.
The event is different from a gala or prom, said DYS Boys-2-Men mentoring program coordinator Johnny Jones.
"You know middle school kids don't get to go to prom, or things like that, don't get to dress up. They have the raves and stuff, but you want to do like a kids' dress-up attire event for the kids, with sneakers," Jones said.
DYS is anticipating 50 to 100 kids to attend the event, Jones said.
Taylor said all middle- to high school-aged students in the community are welcome to attend.
DYS is always looking for something enjoyable and safe to keep the youth busy, Taylor said.
"We're excited. I hope it's a a fun time; that's what I'm aiming for. I just want them to have a good time. Good, safe fun," Taylor said.
Both program coordinators said DYS may continue to host this event in the future.

Deion Sanders health update: Colorado coach expected to return to job soon

A new video posted by his son shows Colorado football coach Deion Sanders walking gingerly at his estate in Texas less than a week before he's expected to make his first public appearance since April. In the video posted by Deion Sanders Jr., Sanders Sr. received a visit from rapper Lil Wayne, one of several friends who have come to see him as he battles an unspecified health issue that has kept him out of the spotlight and away from his job in Boulder. The list of well-wishers has included former NFL players Michael Irvin and Adam 'Pacman' Jones, as well as Colorado Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. 'Deion's doing good,' Jones said in an interview with BetOnline posted this week. 'I think he got another week at home before they get started. He'll be there. He'll be ready to go.' BIG 12 QB RANKINGS: Experienced signal-callers headline 2025 season Sanders, 57, is scheduled to appear in Frisco, Texas on July 9 as part of the annual preseason Big 12 Conference media days. It will be his first appearance on the job since April before he retreated to Texas and missed several events this summer, including Colorado's annual high school and youth football camps in June. He also canceled a speaking appearance in Florida on June 8 and wasn't able to make it to Hunter's wedding in Tennessee May 24. Sanders previously said in an interview with former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel that he had lost 14 pounds and that 'what I'm dealing with right now is at a whole 'nother level.' He has a history of blood clots in his legs, which previously led to the amputation of two of his toes. It's unclear if that is related to his recent sabbatical. Sanders said he'd provide an update at a later date. 'Thanks to everybody that has been praying and sending good thoughts and prayers his way,' Jones said. The ME+EM Summer Sale Is On – These Are All The Staple Items We're Shopping

Since its launch in 2009, ME+EM has fast become a fashion editor favourite. With its accessible mid price point, the brand lives by an ethos of 'intelligent style', offering wardrobe staples that marry comfort and fit with timeless appeal. Helmed by founder Clare Hornby, the brand uses a '3F' philosophy of 'flattering, functional and forever', aiming to produce items that will endure. It has an eye on sustainability too, with organic cotton, recycled fibres and responsibly sourced wool used alongside circular design practices. ME+EM has gathered many a famous fan, with the likes of Daisy Edgar-Jones, Phoebe Dynevor, Leighton Meester and the Princess of Wales favouring its forever-chic, soft power pieces. The brand has made waves in the political sphere too, with Lady Victoria Starmer choosing to walk into Number 10 Downing Street the day after the 2024 general election in a Labour-red fluid crepe midi-dress (leading to a 300% spike in visits to the website) and Angela Rayner opting for a green trouser suit the day she was appointed deputy prime minister, and an orange ME+EM dress for her first cabinet meeting. As author and fashion educator Andrea Cheong tells ELLE UK: 'The quality of the construction is really high – you'll see bias binding around zips, French seams, pin-tucking and things are lined. I'm surprised to see the levels of details they have in their designs, particularly in the summer collection, given the price point,' noting that they could 'easily' charge what Joseph does. In 2022 and 2023, ME+EM was named as one of Britain's fastest-growing private companies in the Sunday Times 100 list and in 2024 the brand announced sales of £120 million, which was a 46% year-on-year increase. It has now launched its summer sale, and with items up to 50% off, it's the perfect time to invest. Below, our edit of the best buy-now, wear-forever pieces to add to basket. Taylor Makar aims to follow in his brother's footsteps, join Cale Makar on contending Avalanche

If it happens with the Avalanche, they could join the likes of the Hughes brothers, who have Jack and Luke suiting up together with the Devils. (Brother Quinn plays for Vancouver.) Cale, of course, is already well-established as one of the league's top defensemen and coming off a season in which the UMass product won the Norris Trophy. Taylor keeps working his way toward the NHL. He started last year at the University of Maine before joining the Avalanche's American Hockey League affiliate, the Colorado Eagles, for the remainder of the season. 'Obviously, we train together. Do everything. It's just cool.' Related : The Makar brothers are highly competitive in whatever hobby, activity, or sport in which they challenge each other. By Taylor's scorecard, he reigns over Cale in cribbage, basketball, board games, and video games. He gives Cale the edge on the golf course and sometimes in tennis. Advertisement To hear Cale tell it, though, the rules sometimes get bent. 'He's the feisty little brother that would cheap-shot you when everything was said and done,' Cale recently said. 'I'd usually win and then for some reason I'd call it quits, and he kind of gave me cheap shots. As kids, we had a lot of fun like that. It definitely brings back a lot of memories. I think it's helped us later in life in competitiveness.' Cale Makar scored on his first NHL shot, during the 2019 playoffs, and has been a star in the league ever since. Gareth Patterson/Associated Press Cale made his NHL debut in the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs — two days after his Minutemen made No surprise, Cale was Now this was a surprise — the secret celebration his younger brother helped spring to commemorate the achievement. Taylor played a role in organizing a golf outing for the unsuspecting Cale as family and friends gathered in the backyard for the trophy presentation. When the group stopped by during their round, everyone was waiting. 'It turned out well, and he was pretty excited,' explained Taylor, a seventh-round pick by Colorado in 2021. 'It was a cool, special moment for all the people that are really close to him and our family to share together.' Big brother's biggest piece of advice? 'Just be myself,' Taylor said. Taylor Makar (left) helped Maine win the Hockey East tournament last season for the first time since 2004. Matthew J. Lee/Globe Staff Cale, 26, certainly is proud of his younger brother. The 24-year-old Taylor is coming off a season where he scored 18 goals and had 12 assists in 38 games for the Black Bears. He then 'I think he's got a lot of intangibles that, once he puts them all together, he's got a really bright career ahead,' said Cale, who was the fourth overall pick by the Avalanche in 2017. 'It's cool to be able to have family this close now.' In April, Cale ventured up to Loveland, Colo., to watch his brother play for the Eagles. Of course, there were extenuating circumstances — Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog was with the Eagles on a conditioning assignment in his recovery from a serious knee injury. It marked Landeskog's first professional game since Colorado's Cup run in 2022. 'First time I've seen [Taylor] play live at least since [youth hockey],' said Cale, who along with teammate Nathan MacKinnon was part of Team Canada's first six players chosen to take part in the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Taylor's road to making the Avalanche roster to start the season figures to be difficult. Colorado is a bona fide title contender and stacked at forward. 'Just keep working hard, keep learning,' Taylor said. 'Got a ways to go, but just put everything out there.' Advertisement
