‘Volunteerism is important to keep city clean': US Consul General
She was speaking at a beach clean-up programme organised as part of the 'Community Day' observance by the American Corner at Andhra University at Rushikonda Beach on Saturday morning.
The US Consul General participated in a beach clean-up activity, collected litter along with students and volunteers. She appreciated the enthusiastic participation of the volunteers, students, and local citizens, underlining the collaborative efforts that help yield positive results for environmental initiatives.
Taking part in the cleanup drive, Andhra University Vice-Chancellor GP Rajasekhar noted that programmes like these contribute significantly to maintaining cleanliness at beaches. He praised the volunteers for their participation.
Sharing his views, Registrar of Andhra University EN Dhanunjaya Rao called for making the beach plastic-free. He urged the implementation of special measures to reduce plastic usage and commended the volunteers for their efforts in maintaining the beach in an eco-friendly manner.
Certificates of appreciation were presented to all the volunteers who took part in the Community Day initiative.
Andhra University director of physical education N Vijay Mohan, NCC coordinator Prof NM Yugandhar, Public Diplomacy Officer Emilia Smith from the US Consulate General Hyderabad, American Spaces coordinator Melissa Nandula, and AU American Corner Coordinator Paul Douglas and others participated in the event.

Army honours Kargil martyr Santhosh Kumar at his house in Kochi
KOCHI: Celebrating the 26th anniversary of Kargil victory, a batch of serving army personnel deployed at Kargil, visited Priya K G, the wife of lance naik Santhosh Kumar P K, at her residence at Vazhakulam near Muvattupuzha on Tuesday. The function was held as part of the Ghar Ghar Shaurya Samman Mahotsav organised to honour Kargil Martyrs. The team, led by Naib Subedar Kingslin, garlanded the picture of Santhosh and paid floral tributes to his picture. A memento and citation were handed over to the wife, his mother Lakshmi Amma and son Arjun. Regiment Havildar Major Rajeesh K K, ex-servicemen and NCC cadets were present on the occasion. 'He had nursed the dream of serving the Indian Army from his childhood. Santhosh joined the Indian Army on October 1, 1984, and served the nation for 14 years and 279 days. He had participated in four major army operations, including Operation Pawan, Operation Rakshak and Operation Vijay. We got married in 1993. He was honoured with the Sena Medal posthumously,' said Priya. Santhosh made the sacrifice on July 6, 1999, while serving at Batalik sector in Kargil, while participating in Operation Vijay to reclaim Indian territory occupied by Pakistan Army. Honouring his martyrdom, the residents of Vettimattam have built a memorial and the Thodupuzha municipality has named a park after him.

AU providing safe and secure environment for foreign students, says Vice-Chancellor
Andhra University Vice-Chancellor Prof. G.P. Rajasekhar on Saturday said that the AU alumni associations abroad would be formed soon. He was speaking at Exit-Engagement-Evening (E3) organised by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in association with Andhra University, at the AU Convention Centre here on Saturday (June 28). Prof. Rajasekhar said that more than 1,000 students from more than 50 countries are studying at the AU. He said that the ICCR is happy with AU for providing a safe and secure environment and quality education to foreign students. He said that steps are being taken to form AU alumni associations abroad, where alumni can come together and work for the welfare of the institutions and enhance the name and reputation of the university. ICCR Director (Scholarships) Sanjay Vedi said that the university students are returning to their home country with the true spirit of Indian culture. He urged the students to promote AU pride in their countries.
