Brighton's Harry Howell, 17, signs first professional contract

New York Times04-07-2025
Harry Howell has signed his first professional contract with Brighton & Hove Albion.
The England junior international attacker has penned a three-year deal after making his Premier League debut in May against Liverpool.
Howell became Brighton's youngest Premier League player at 17 years and 29 days old when he came on in the 84th minute in a double substitution with cousin and matchwinner Jack Hinshelwood in the 3-2 victory over the league champions at the Amex Stadium.

'He adapted in an impressive way to the first team environment,' head coach Fabian Hurzeler told reporters afterwards. 'He showed impressive performances in training sessions and I am not afraid of putting young players in.
'It's not a question of age for me, it's a question of quality, and if you deserve to play, if you show a really good attitude in training, show what you are capable of, then you deserve to play. He had a great start to his Premier League career. He came into the game and just played like he was here for ten years.'
Howell was named in the matchday squad by Hurzeler five times in total from April onwards. His first team involvement with his club restricted him to one goal scoring appearance for England Under-17s in the European Championships in Albania in May in a 4-2 win against the Czech Republic in their closing group fixture, as they missed out narrowly on qualifying for the knockout stages.
Howell and Hinshelwood both started out with Brighton at the age of seven. Utility player Hinshelwood has rejected extra time off granted by Hurzeler to his international players after helping England Under-21's win the Euros in Slovakia at the end of June.
The squad begin pre-season training on Sunday. Hurzeler is confident that Turkish international full-back Ferdi Kadioglu, ruled out from November last season after toe surgery, will be ready to join in a couple of weeks into the pre-season programme which includes a ten-day training camp in Spain in mid-July.
The only first team friendlies open to the public are away to Championship side Southampton on August 2 and against Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg at the Amex on August 9. Hurzeler's second season in charge begins at home to Fulham on August 16.

Man Utd's Mather looks for loan move abroad

Manchester United youngster Sam Mather is likely to look abroad for a loan move this season. Mather, 20, signed a new contract with United last summer after being part of their pre-season tour to the United States. However, he was overlooked for this summer's trip by head coach Ruben Amorim and, given the position he is most suited to is as a number 10, Mather knows his path to the first team is blocked. That means the Salford-born player will almost certainly go out on another loan this season. However, he wants to avoid a repeat of last season, when he went to Tranmere in January but only made two brief substitute appearances the following month. It is felt, at his age, Mather's technical abilities make him more suited to playing abroad than in the EFL, with the potential for a permanent deal likely to be part of any arrangement.

'Draw that feels like a win': India hails great Test escape

India on Monday lauded their cricketers for pulling off a "draw that feels like a win" in the fourth Test against England to keep the series alive. India, 2-1 down in the five-match series and a daunting 311 runs behind on first innings, batted out Sunday's final day to take it to a decider at the Oval, starting Thursday. Captain Shubman Gill struck his fourth century of the series before unbeaten hundreds from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar denied England victory. KL Rahul also scored 90. It was a remarkable fightback after India had lost their first two second-innings wickets without a run on the board on Saturday. "When it comes to India-England, Old Trafford is known for keeping the series alive," India great Sachin Tendulkar posted on X. It was a "fantastic comeback" said Tendulkar who added that Rahul, Gill, Jadeja and Sundar had shown "great character and fighting spirit". The Times of India headlined with "The draw that feels like a win", while said it had been a "great escape". Gill had come into his first series as captain with question marks over his overseas batting record. But he has laid all doubts to rest with a record-breaking run, joining Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar as the only Test captains to score four centuries in a series. His 722 runs are the most scored by an Indian batsman in a series against England, surpassing team-mate Yashasvi Jaiswal's 712 in 2023/24. "Nobody ever doubted Shubman Gill's talent," said head coach Gautam Gambhir . "Those who did, they just know to talk cricket but lack understanding of the game. Some people take time to blossom in international cricket. And no one in the dressing room is surprised by what he has done." Uncapped wicketkeeper Narayan Jagadeesan was on Monday called into the India squad as cover, after Rishabh Pant was ruled out with a fractured foot. Dhruv Jurel is expected to take the gloves in the fifth Test. fk/abh/dh
