Dad killed in freak accident during base jumping competition as parachute fails to open
A dad tragically died in a "freak" accident during a base jumping competition after a suspected parachute failure.
James Lee Nowland, 42, died after plunging from the summit of a plateau in the Dolomites mountain range in northern Italy, called Sass Pordoi. The dad, from Perth, Australia, died on Wednesday afternoon when he crashed onto a road around 400 metres away from the base jumping course, according to Italian alpine rescue crews. A group of Australians, who had known James, alerted emergency services to the tragic accident, but rescue crews were unable to revive the daredevil dad.
Investigators looking into the sad case suspect his parachute might have been unable to open due to a technical failure, according to Italian news agency ANSA.
Rescuer Andrea Dorigatti, speaking to Seven News, said: "We tried to do our best to save (him)... there was nothing to do for him. I asked the friends and they told me that the problem was with the parachute that didn't get open."
James was an experienced base jumper and he had travelled thousands of miles to Italy for an international competition in the daredevil sport. The dad's friends reportedly said he died after a "freak" accident.
The victim's heartbroken brother paid tribute in a touching social media post, alongside a picture of the pair in the snow on a trip to Canada. He said: "Rest in peace brother! Wish we had more times like this together. Hope you're soaring through the clouds doing what you love forever."
James' social media accounts have documented his travels across the globe, including snaps of his base jumping in areas like New Zealand, Switzerland and China. Aside from his adrenaline-fuelling hobby, James' day job was in construction project management.
Before the father's sad death, he has shared content of himself preparing for the Pordoi BASE Race competition, which is due to run from July 16 to 18. This extreme competition involves jumpers using a wingsuit to fly down from a rocky summit at fast speeds.
Base jumping is a notoriously dangerous extreme sport that has claimed the lives of many daredevils. A Spanish TV presenter, dubbed "Adrenaline Woman", tragically also died recently after a horror base jumping incident. Spanish presenter Marta Jiménez, 34, died while base jumping in the Pyrenees mountains, near the northeastern city of Huesca, on Sunday at around 10.30am.
She gained her nickname for her daring and high-octane stunts, which she performed on TV. Her colleagues on the Spanish chat show "El Hormiguero" (The Anthill) confirmed Marta's tragic death and insisted that she would not be forgotten.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene but they were unable to save Marta, her TV show said in a statement. Rescue teams even brought a helicopter to the site but they found the woman's lifeless body at the location.

Teen hockey star dies in fall at Ibiza hotel weeks after fellow Scot
A teenager has died after reportedly falling from a balcony in Spain just weeks after another Scot died at the same hotel. Gary Kelly died while on holiday at the Ibiza Rocks Hotel in San Antonio in the early hours of Monday morning. The 19-year-old was a promising ice hockey player from Dundee with team Aberdeen Lynx describing him as one of their 'brightest young stars'. Local Spanish media have reported that the teenager died after falling from the third floor of the hotel. The death comes just two weeks after Evan Thomson from Aberdeen died at the same hotel after also falling from a height while celebrating his 26th birthday. Ibiza Rocks has suspended all events due to take place 'out of respect for those involved' and says it will fully assist authorities. Spanish police have launched an investigation into the death, which they say 'appears to be an accident' Gary started his career in the Dundee Stars Junior set-up and represented Scotland at U17 level. The teenager joined the Lynx for the 2022/23 season and had a brief stint with the Dundee Rockets before returning to the North East. Sharing the news of his death, the club said: 'Gary was more than just a talented hockey player — he was a young man full of heart, passion, and dedication. 'On the ice, he gave everything he had. Off the ice, he brought energy, kindness, and an infectious love of life that lifted everyone around him. Ruben Amorim is overseeing a rebuild with Manchester United, spending big on new signings while preparing to take a big financial hit on some of his sidelined stars Manchester United are willing to accept cut-price offers for Ruben Amorim's outcasts – with Marcus Rashford's asking price slashed to £26million. Amorim exiled five players – Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia – from training after all declared their desire to leave. While Rashford is finalising a loan move to Barcelona for the upcoming season, the futures of the rest remain unresolved, with all four finding themselves in limbo. Rashford underwent a medical in Barcelona on Monday, ahead of a season-long loan deal, at the end of which the Spanish giants can sign him for £26m – a huge drop from his market value of £100m a few years ago. Barca will cover Rashford's wages for the loan period, with the 27-year-old - who earns £325,000-a-week at United – having accepted a 15 percent pay cut to move to the Nou Camp. United's squad fly to the US on Tuesday to begin their two-week pre-season tour and Amorim has axed all four from the travelling party, forcing them to stay behind and train. Such is United's desperation to offload those players who have been left behind, the club are willing to take a major hit on the transfer fees they could have received for them at the height of their value. Garnacho's highest market value was £70m a year ago, but his stock has fallen so low that United are willing to accept a fee of around £40m for the 20-year-old winger. It is a similar story with Sancho, signed from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in 2021, but who United are now happy to let go for £15m, just to be rid of him, although with only a year left on his contract, a loan move next season is most likely. Winger Antony joined United for £86m in 2022, but his value has also plummeted, with interested clubs now being quoted around £30m to sign him, while a fee of around £5m will be accepted for Malacia, valued at £20m a couple of years ago. In the past, United have taken on tour players who they intended to sell, most recently Sancho, who travelled to the US last summer and played, despite going on loan to Chelsea when the squad returned to the UK. Romelu Lukaku went on the 2019 tour of the Far East and Australia but did not play a minute for United, ahead of his move to Inter Milan later that summer. But the willingness of the United hierarchy to back Amorim's ruthless decision to order his exiled stars to stay behind and train, while the rest of the squad embark on a lucrative three-game tour of the States, underlines the strength of backing for the Portuguese head coach, despite last season's disastrous 15th-placed finish in the Premier League.
