New phase of pavement repairs now under way
Leicester City Council is carrying out the scheme in Melton Road, which sees old, uneven and broken slabs replaced with new block paving.
The current scheme is being carried out between Ascot Road and Herbert Avenue, on the northbound side of Melton Road, and between Acorn Street and Marfitt Street, on the southbound.
The work, set to cost about £685,000, will be the second phase of a planned programme of investment to improve several sections of footway along Melton Road in coming years, subject to funding.
Work to replace the existing uneven pavement on the outbound stretch of the street, between Ascot Road and Checketts Road, was carried out last year.
Also included in the work is the covering of existing tree pits with a porous resin-bound material to help improve drainage and the installation of new drainage channels where required.
Damaged footpaths caused by tree roots will be repaired as well, with new bollards added along with new cycle racks where possible to prevent vehicles parking on the pavement, the council said.
The authority added that work will be carried out in sections to help minimise disruption to pedestrians and nearby businesses and is expected to take about 50 weeks to complete.
Some short-term lane restrictions on part of Melton Road may be required to ensure a safe working environment.
Leicester mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: "This ongoing investment in repairing and replacing broken and uneven pavements on Melton Road will help improve the look and feel of the area and make it more attractive for residents and shoppers.
"Projects like this are an important part of ensuring that our neighbourhood shopping streets and busy routes into the city stay looking their best."

M25 closed following police incident
A section of the M25 was closed on the Kent/Surrey border earlier following a police incident, according to National Highways. The motorway was shut in both directions between junction five for Sevenoaks in Kent and junction six for Godstone in Surrey at about 17:30 BST, Surrey Police said. M6 drivers warned of Friday night delays amidst separate motorway incidents
M6 drivers have been warned of delays and tailbacks in and around the West Midlands this evening, Friday July 25. Three separate incidents are causing tailbacks and delays on different parts of the M6 network tonight. A car fire, accident and 'police incident' all unfolded on the major Midlands motorway after 5pm at the height of rush hour. In some parts of the network, traffic was shown to be clogging up the carriageway. An update at 6:30pm on live traffic system INRIX warned of lingering queues near J12 of the M6: "Queueing traffic due to earlier police incident on M6 in both directions from J12 A5 Watling Street (Gailey) to J13 A449 (Stafford South).Just prior to 18:25 all traffic was held for just over five minutes." An accident on the M6 Southbound at J10A was causing tailbacks near Walsall. Drivers were told by 6:30pm restrictions were lifted: "Traffic easing, earlier accident on M6 Southbound from J10A (M54 Interchange) to J10 A454 Black Country Route (Wolverhampton / Walsall).Restrictions have been lifted. " In the same area but on the opposite side, a car fire was also slowing down drivers and traffic was held for 45 minutes. By 6:30pm, the latest update read: "Traffic easing, earlier vehicle fire on M6 Northbound from J10A (M54 Interchange) to J11 A460 (Cannock).All restrictions were lifted prior to 18:25. Nissan supplier exploring wind turbine plan
A key supplier to car maker Nissan is exploring plans for a new wind turbine to help reduce carbon emissions. Unipres (UK) Ltd, an automotive manufacturing company, wants to install a 492ft (150m) tip wind turbine at its Sunderland plant on Cherry Blossom Way, in Washington. The firm, which supplies press-formed vehicle parts to the Nissan plant in Washington, said the wind turbine could generate up to 5MW. An application to Sunderland City Council planning officials has requested a "scoping opinion" on the plans to look at environmental impacts. Site plans show the wind turbine proposed for a parcel of land near the Unipres boundary with the Nissan plant site, which already has wind turbines. It was noted the "energy generated would be distributed directly to the warehouse and would function to meet the energy needs of the facility". Applicants said the proposed development would "aim to reduce the carbon emissions from the facility" and would be "largely self-sustainable", with any "excess energy" potentially being exported back to the national grid. 'Employment benefits' Following the period of operation, estimated at 25 years, the applicant is also expected to "decommission" the wind turbine "in line with best practice industry guidance". The supporting environmental impact scoping report adds: "The proposed development would have economic and employment benefits in the form of contracting opportunities for local and regional contractors both for construction activities themselves and throughout the supply chain." A decision on the screening opinion request will be made by the council following a consultation exercise, with a decision expected in coming months.
