Indonesia Cuisine: $3.80 lontong you'll dream of after trying

The scent of star anise and cardamom doesn't dissipate from Indonesia Cuisine, no matter how windy it is. I was hooked by their showcase of cooked dishes, and immediately started queuing when I caught a whiff of their rendang.
Despite the line snaking from the stall, customers were served promptly, and I received my food without much delay. It was nearing peak lunch hour at Bendemeer Market and Food Centre, which explained the rapidly lengthening queue forming behind me. Phew.
I was first introduced to Indonesia Cuisine through its Google reviews, where netizens posted contrasting comments about the lontong and rendang. Which one was truly the best? I was curious too, so it was time for me to go find out!
Instead of the usual beef, Indonesia Cuisine serves up a mean Chicken Set (S$4). This set includes a thicc chicken drumstick, crunchy sautéed vegetables, a fried sunny-side-up egg and rice. Everything is topped with a generous layer of the fragrant rendang sauce.
Before I start talking about the food, I need to give a shoutout to the prices here. With everything being around the S$5 to S$6 mark these days, I appreciate the set meals priced for less. The cheapest item on the menu is , for just S$2!
I'm usually one to start a meal from the small side dishes, but even I couldn't resist the chicken drumstick smothered in sauce. It was easy to peel off chunks of flesh with cutlery alone, a convenience I constantly rave about.
The rendang sauce complemented the meatiness of the chicken without overpowering its natural flavours. The spices were a carefully concocted blend; a versatile companion with an umami-packed fragrance.
With the addition of the egg, a spoonful of the chicken and rice pair becomes a creamy bite. The vegetables resemble those served with caifan, with a distinct savouriness from oyster sauce. A few pieces of cabbage eaten after deliver a refreshing crunch.
However, the chilli could use a little less salt. It didn't deliver much spice — which I'm impartial to — but the extra seasoning on the toppings was overkill. Without the chilli, everything was a-ok!

If the rendang was a gut punch of aromatics, the (S$3.80) was its creamier, gentler sibling. With the first sip, what hit me wasn't spice, but a smooth and almost floral coconut-iness.
Calling it 'creamy' is an understatement. This bowl was downright decadent. The sayur lodeh swirled with pale coconut milk tinged orange from spices. It coated the softened vegetables and slices of lontong like a second skin.
While the coconut cream did take centre stage in this dish, I appreciated how the curry spices cut through the indulgence. The mild spice and aromatics were invigorating in both scent and taste, preventing the sayur lodeh from becoming too jelak.
The cylindrical slices of lontong also played a part in balancing out the flavour profile. The unseasoned centre of the thickly cut rice cake sopped up the soup whilst mellowing out the creaminess.
A hard-boiled egg was the perfect finish to the meal. The jelly-like white and crumbly yolk soaked up the last dredges of my sayur lodeh. With the yolk becoming a thick coconut-and-egg paste, this last bite was a delight.
The Lontong at Indonesia Cuisine was the highlight of my day. As a creamy food enthusiast, the taste and texture were right up my alley. But I do know that I'm as fickle as they come, and with Singapore's heat these days, soup won't always be what I crave.
This is where the Chicken Rendang Set comes in, a filling, no-frills plate of goodness more than worth the S$4 price tag. Overall, the time I spent eating — ahem, investigating this Lontong VS Rendang championship was fruitful.
So, what about you? Team Lontong or Team Rendang, there's only one way to find out!

Bali flights cancelled as Indonesia's Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki erupts with huge 18km ash plume

Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki in eastern Indonesia erupted on Monday, propelling a massive column of volcanic ash 18km (11 miles) into the sky and blanketing surrounding villages in debris. Several international flights from Australia to Bali have been cancelled, and local authorities have warned of potential lahar flows – destructive volcanic mudslides – if heavy rains occur. The 1,584m volcano, situated on Flores island, is part of a twin-peaked formation with the taller and less active Mount Lewotobi Perempuan. The eruption occurred at 11.05am local time, according to Indonesia's volcanology agency, which noted that clouds of searing gas cascaded down the slopes during the blast. There were no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage. Officials continue to monitor the area, maintaining an 8km exclusion zone around the crater. Dozens of residents from nearby villages have been evacuated as a precaution. Australian airlines including Qantas, its low cost carrier JetStar, and Virgin Australia said that they have canceled several flights between Australia and Bali following the eruption. Monday's eruption is the latest in a series of violent outbursts from Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki. The volcano previously erupted in June, May, March and November. The 17 June eruption sent ash plumes 11km into the atmosphere, visible from space, and triggered widespread flight cancellations from Bali's Denpasar International Airport. Air traffic was also severely disrupted, with numerous flights to Australia, China, India, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore grounded or delayed. Ash was reported as far as 93km away, according to Weatherzone, prompting nationwide alerts. In November, multiple eruptions killed nine people, injured dozens, and forced thousands to flee. Indonesia's volcano monitoring agency had already raised the alert level for Lewotobi Laki Laki to its highest in June, following increased volcanic activity. The frequency of tremors surged from an average of eight to ten daily to 50 in just two hours, reported 9 News earlier last month. Authorities responded by doubling the safety perimeter to 7km, later expanding it to 8km following the eruptions in June. Volcanic ash, composed of fine particles of rock, crystal and glass, poses significant danger to aircraft. When inhaled by jet engines, it can melt and resolidify inside, potentially causing engine failure and serious damage to the aircraft's structure. Indonesia, a nation of more than 270 million people spread across an archipelago, sits along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' – a zone of intense seismic activity. The country is home to 120 active volcanoes and frequently experiences earthquakes, eruptions and tsunamis.

An eruption of Indonesia's Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano sends ash 11 miles high

Indonesia's rumbling Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki erupted Monday, sending a column of volcanic materials as high as 18 kilometers (11 miles) into the sky and depositing ash on villages. The volcano has been at the highest alert level since last month and no casualties were immediately reported. Indonesia's Geology Agency recorded an avalanche of searing gas clouds mixed with rocks and lava traveling up to 5 kilometers (3 miles) down the volcano's slopes during the eruption. Observations from drones showed lava filling the crater, indicating deep movement of magma that set off volcanic earthquakes. The column of hot clouds that rose into the sky was the volcano's highest since the major eruption in November 2024 that killed nine people and injured dozens, said Muhammad Wafid, the Geology Agency chief. It also erupted in March. 'An eruption of that size certainly carries a higher potential for danger, including its impact on aviation,' Wafid told The Associated Press from Switzerland where he was attending a seminar. 'We shall reevaluate to enlarge its danger zone that must be cleared of villagers and tourist activities.' The volcano monitoring agency had increased the alert status for Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki to the highest level after an eruption on June 18, and more than doubled an exclusion zone to a 7-kilometer (4.3-mile) radius since then as eruptions became more frequent. After an eruption early last year, about 6,500 people evacuated and the island's Frans Seda Airport was closed. The airport has remained closed since then due to the continuing seismic activity. The 1,584-meter (5,197-foot) mountain is a twin volcano with Mount Lewotobi Perempuan in the district of Flores Timur. Monday's eruption was one of Indonesia's largest volcano eruptions since 2010 when Mount Merapi, the country's most volatile volcano erupted on the densely populated island of Java. That eruption killed 353 people and forced over 350,000 people to evacuate affected areas. Indonesia is an archipelago of more than 280 million people with frequent seismic activity. It has 120 active volcanoes and sits along the 'Ring of Fire,' a horseshoe-shaped series of seismic fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.
