Redevelopment of Tirupati Rly Station on fast track

Hans India4 days ago
TIRUPATI: Tirupati Railway Station, the main gateway for thousands of devotees visiting the famous Lord Venkateswara temple at Tirumala, is finally getting a modern upgrade.
After years of delays, the much-anticipated Rs 300 crore redevelopment project was initiated in 2022, with an initial completion deadline set for February 2025. However, due to technical challenges, the project timeline had to be extended. The station is now expected to be completed by December 2025. The redevelopment works are meant to provide a seamless experience for the passengers whose numbers are expected to cross one lakh mark in the next 2-3 decades. To meet this growing demand, the Indian Railways is transforming Tirupati into one of the most modern railway stations in the country. The old entrance on the north side had become too cramped for the ever-growing crowd of devotees. To ease the pressure, the railways have focused on developing the southern side also with a new building by providing all advanced amenities.
Station Director K Satyanarayana told The Hans India that around 95 per cent of the work on the southern side is already done. Once it's completed, the focus will shift to speeding up construction on the northern side. The southern side features a large G+3 building, which will later be expanded by another 10 floors under a public-private partnership. These extra floors will be leased out for commercial spaces.
The new station is being built with passenger comfort in mind. The southern basement alone offers parking for 200 cars and 300 two-wheelers. The ground floor will have ticket counters, arrival and departure concourses, and waiting lounges. The second floor will host waiting halls, a women's waiting area, a food court, toilets, and a cloakroom. The third floor will house facilities like a running room for staff, resting rooms for TTEs and railway offices. To make moving around easier, altogether 20 lifts and 22 escalators are being installed. All platforms will connect to two spacious air concourses, each 35 meters wide, making it easier for passengers to reach any platform once their train is announced.
Security has also been taken into account. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) offices will be located on the ground floor, close to the platforms for better accessibility.
On the northern side, the new station building will cover 10,800 sq m and the G+3 facility will include waiting halls, a VIP lounge, cloakroom, shops, kiosks, reservation office, retiring rooms, and railway offices.
To ease traffic, a new road is being built on the southern side to connect DR Mahal Road with Rayala Cheruvu Road. This 80-foot-wide road will also connect the southern side building directly, once the existing running room is demolished and relocated.
The Station Director said that with the final touches progressing fast, Tirupati Railway Station is well on its way to becoming a landmark facility that not only serves pilgrims better but also offers a modern, hassle-free experience for all passengers.

The Gunners have reportedly beaten Manchester United to secure the Swedish striker for the upcoming season. The transfer saga turned messy when Gyokeres refused to return to pre-season training in Lisbon. He even sent a legal letter to Sporting, claiming that an agreement over his release fee had been broken. Here's how much Gyokeres will get if he moves to Arsenal However, it has now emerged that Arsenal are close to ending the drama after agreeing a deal worth £55 million (over Rs 600 crore) plus £8.6 million (over Rs 95 crore) in bonuses. The 27-year-old is set to sign a five-year contract. According to The Athletic, Gyokeres wanted to join Mikel Arteta's squad and not Man Utd, where his former boss Ruben Amorim is currently placed. He will reportedly join his new teammates on their pre-season tour in Singapore. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD If the deal is finalised, Gyokeres will become Arsenal's fifth signing this summer after Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Christian Norgaard, and Kepa Arrizabalaga. 'You know I cannot comment on any player that is not part of our group yet. When we have something concrete to offer in any case to any player, we will do that,' Arteta was quoted as saying about Gyokeres in Daily Express. More from Football Gyokeres caught attention after scoring 54 goals in 52 matches for Sporting last season. He played a key role in helping Sporting win both the league and cup titles in the 2024-25 season. They will hope that Gyokeres can provide the missing spark to push the team towards a Premier League title this season.

Mumbai: DRI busts racket involved in duty evasion of Rs 30 crore in luxury furniture import; 3 arrested

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Tuesday said that it has busted a racket allegedly involved in Customs duty evasion to the tune of approximately Rs 30 crore in the imports of premium luxury furniture. The agency raided multiple locations in Mumbai and arrested three persons on Monday and Tuesday under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. According to DRI, it received specific intelligence regarding the import racket. Acting on the intelligence, DRI officials conducted extensive searches across multiple locations, including business premises, warehouses, offices of freight forwarders, customs brokers, and other associated entities. 'The investigation has exposed a complex, intertwined network used for massive undervaluation and misdeclaration of branded luxury furniture operating across multiple jurisdictions, involving the use of dummy importers (IEC holders), local intermediaries, overseas shell entities, and fabricated invoices and related documentation to systematically undervalue branded luxury furniture,' the DRI stated in a statement. The anti-smuggling agency's investigation revealed that the beneficial owner, a well-known luxury furniture brand, was sourcing luxury furniture from reputed Italian and other European brands. However, invoicing was being done in the names of shell companies based in jurisdictions such as Dubai, while the goods were shipped directly from Europe to India. In parallel, fabricated invoices were sent through a Singapore-based intermediary for falsely declaring the goods as unbranded furniture at significantly undervalued rates to Customs for clearance in the name of dummy importers, the DRI said. Once cleared through Customs, the goods were transferred on paper to the intended beneficial owner via a local intermediary created for this purpose, while in reality the goods were directly sent to the beneficial owner or the customer at the direction of the beneficial owner of the whole scam, the central agency added. Preliminary findings indicate a gross undervaluation of 70 to 90 per cent of the actual transaction value, resulting in estimated customs duty evasion of approximately Rs 30 crore. The beneficial owner, the importer (IEC holder), and the intermediary have been found in complicity and close conspiracy with each other for executing the whole modus operandi to evade a huge amount of customs duty, the central agency probe has revealed.

Yogi Adityanaths BIG Gift For Women: Cabinet Approves THIS Much Stamp Duty Exemption For Women

LUCKNOW: In a landmark Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at Lok Bhawan, the Uttar Pradesh government approved several key proposals aimed at boosting women empowerment, youth digital access, infrastructure, and education. The session cleared a total of 37 proposals and announced the commencement of the Vidhan Sabha's Monsoon Session from August 11. One of the most significant decisions made was the expansion of the stamp duty exemption for women property buyers. Previously limited to properties worth Rs 10 lakh, this exemption has now been extended to properties valued up to Rs 1 crore, offering a 1 per cent reduction in stamp duty. This can translate into savings of up to Rs 1 lakh per property registration in the name of women. State Labour Minister Anil Rajbhar said that this move targets middle-class women, helping them become property owners, boosting their confidence, financial independence, and social respect. The policy complements the Mission Shakti initiative and aligns with the Union Government's recent proposal to reduce stamp duty on property deeds, favouring women. In an effort to enhance digital empowerment among the youth, the Cabinet approved distributing feature-rich tablets under the Swami Vivekananda Youth Sashaktikaran Yojana. The tablets, superior to smartphones in screen size, battery life, and multitasking capabilities, will support education, skill development, and job preparedness. The five-year scheme has a budget allocation of Rs 2,000 crore for the financial year 2025-26 and will be fully funded by the state government without any financial burden on the Centre. The government also sanctioned the construction of the Chitrakoot Link Expressway, a Rs 939.67 crore infrastructure project to be executed via the EPC model. The 15.172-kilometre, initially four-lane expressway will connect Bharatkoop in Chitrakoot to Ahmadganj village, linking the Varanasi-Banda National Highway and NH 135 BG. This expressway is expected to improve regional connectivity and boost tourism in Chitrakoot by providing faster, smoother travel for pilgrims and visitors. The project includes a five-year maintenance period post-construction and is anticipated to generate around 38 lakh man-days of employment. To align technical education with industry standards, the Cabinet approved a Rs 6,935.86 crore project in partnership with Tata Technologies Limited (TTL) to upgrade 121 government polytechnic institutes. TTL will invest Rs 6,034.20 crore, while the state government will contribute Rs 1,063.96 crore plus an additional Rs 858.11 crore for infrastructure and facilities. The initiative will establish Tata Technology Excellence Centres to enhance diploma-level education and skill development. The first phase will focus on upgrading 45 polytechnic institutes as a pilot project. The Cabinet announced that the Monsoon Session of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature will begin on August 11. This session will comply with constitutional mandates requiring a maximum six-month gap between sessions. The government plans to present bills to replace ordinances issued after the last session and conduct other vital legislative business.
