Canada's McIntosh aces her 'biggest' night of world championships
McIntosh claimed gold in the women's 400 metres freestyle in three minutes and 56.26 seconds, nearly two seconds ahead of Chinese silver medallist Li Bingjie, with American great Katie Ledecky finishing in third place.
The three-times Olympic champion did not have much time to savour her win, however, and exited quickly to prepare for the 200 individual medley (IM) semi-finals.
Despite the tight schedule McIntosh was again in a class of her own, qualifying for the final more than a second ahead of her nearest rival.
"While preparing mentally for this world championships, I thought tonight is my biggest night of the whole meet," the 18-year-old said. "So to come out with a gold medal and a really good, strong semi-final in the 200 IM, I'm really happy.
"I've never done a double like that, and I think 400m free, at past world championships and Olympics, I haven't been at my best, and I haven't been where I wanted to be.
"To finally stand in the centre of the podium is promising for the rest of the meet... I was very relaxed, just based off how I've been feeling this past couple of months, and especially in warm-up today, I felt really strong."
McIntosh is coming into the competition on the back of a barnstorming Canadian trials last month, where she set world records in the 400 freestyle as well as the 200 IM and 400 IM.
"I'm in the best shape of my life," she said. "So now I just have to act on that and put it into all my races."

Daniel Wiffen misses out on 400m Freestyle Final after recovering from appendicitis: ‘I'm not letting it affect me'
Belfast native McMillan posted a time of 3:47.55 to finish 14th for Great Britain, over a second off the time required to qualify for the Final. Ireland's Wiffen finished 16th with a time of 3:47.57. The Magheralin man said: 'I was pretty disappointed with the overall time. I didn't follow the race plan I was meant to. Honestly though I'm happy, it's a warm-up for my main events later in the week. I'm looking forward to the 800m in the next two days. 'I had appendicitis about five weeks ago, but I'm not using that as an excuse, as I'm hopefully fully recovered at this point. I'm not letting it affect me at this World Championships. I'm here to race and race fast'. Wiffen will also compete in the 800m and 1500m. This time last year, Wiffen won Olympic gold in the 800m and bronze over 1500m.

Commanders' Terry McLaurin arrives at camp, put on PUP list
July 27 - Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin arrived at training camp Sunday without a new deal and was placed on the physically unable to perform list with an ankle injury. "Terry McLaurin has reported and we're very happy about that," Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said. "He'll start training camp on PUP for his ankle." McLaurin, who turns 30 in September, was placed on the reserve/did not report list Wednesday. He is seeking an extension as he enters the final season of a three-year, $68.4 million deal. His average annual salary of $22.8 million ranks 17th among receivers. Cincinnati's Ja'Marr Chase is No. 1, earning an average of $40.2 million, per Spotrac. "On the business side, (Commanders general manager Adam Peters) and his side are still working very hard with Terry and his reps on the business side of things," Quinn said. "While on PUP he'll be working with the trainers." McLaurin was fined $50,000 per day and $200,000 in total after missing the start of training camp. Washington selected McLaurin, a product of Ohio State, in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He has been selected to the Pro Bowl twice and was named a second team All-Pro in 2024. McLaurin is coming off a big year, amassing 82 catches for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 receiving touchdowns in 17 games. It was his fifth consecutive 1,000-yard season. --Field Level Media
