U7+ Alliance Summit: UM6P Reaffirms Commitment Towards Addressing Global Challenges
UM6P was represented by Khalid Baddou at the summit, which was co-chaired by Professor Lamiae Azizi from UM6P and Professor Valerie Amiraux from the Montreal University. Baddou joined U7+ leadership in adopting a joint unified statement addressed to G7 country leaders.
The letter focuses on the role of universities in the governance and responsible use of AI, a statement from UM6P said today.
'The U7+ working group outlines concrete recommendations across four pillars: AI workforce development, inclusive innovation, public policy frameworks, and efforts to close the global AI divide,' the statement said.
These top universities are aligning to tackle global policy challenges, as well as boost academic expertise to influence international governance frameworks.
The alliance aims to put academic leadership at the forefront to ensure AI development aligns with the values of equity, trust, and responsible governance.
The participation aligns with UM6P's broader institutional model that includes interdisciplinary education, public policy engagement, and research.
'Within this framework, its AI Movement is now a UNESCO Category II Center, mandated to position Morocco as a regional leader in AI transformation,' UM6P added, celebrating the adoption of ChatGPT Edu across UM6P's learning environments.
UM6P is the first African university to adopt this approach. Within this context, the university is also boosting women's integration within the AI field by providing training aimed at accelerating the next generation of women leaders in AI across the continent.

Marrakech – The University Mohammed VI Polytechnique (UM6P) and Tanger Med Group signed a new partnership agreement on Tuesday, launching the 'AI Tanger Med' program. This initiative mobilizes students from the 1337 MED campus to develop artificial intelligence solutions for real industrial challenges faced by companies within the Tanger Med ecosystem. The program operates under the scientific guidance of UM6P's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory to ensure strong academic foundations while addressing practical operational needs. Students work on concrete projects involving automation, data analysis, and cybersecurity – all directly connected to port, logistics, and industrial operations. 'The terrain becomes a classroom and puts innovation at the service of operational excellence,' states the joint press release from both organizations. This approach creates a dual benefit: Tanger Med brings together its partners to formulate operational problems, while students gain an immersive, structured experience connecting their technical skills to industrial realities. The agreement builds upon a successful collaboration that began in 2021 with the establishment of the 1337 MED campus in Martil near Tangier. Today, this campus hosts nearly 400 students trained through a unique model in Morocco based on project learning, mutual assistance, and autonomy. Without traditional lectures or professors, students develop problem-solving skills through collaborative projects. This partnership propels the North African country's digital landscape forward alongside other technological initiatives. Earlier in July, the Ministry of Digital Transition held the first national conference on artificial intelligence under the theme 'An Efficient and Ethical AI Strategy Serving Our Society.' During this conference, Digital Transition Minister Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni declared that 'integrating AI into the national strategic horizon is a prerequisite for sovereignty.' She asserted that AI must be viewed 'not as a subsidiary technical solution, but as a fundamental institutional responsibility.' The government has recently launched several initiatives to position Morocco as a regional leader in AI. On July 22, a protocol agreement between government ministries, the Moroccan Investment and Export Development Agency (AMDIE), and the French group, Onepoint, established a data and AI excellence center in the Casablanca-Settat region. The project plans to recruit 500 Moroccan engineers over four years, strengthening expertise in AI, middleware, and data management. Additionally, the Ministry of Digital Transition signed partnerships with UM6P in early July to advance research in data centers and digital sovereignty as part of the 'Morocco Digital 2030' national strategy.

Morocco to Invest $8 Billion for 85% 5G Coverage by 2030
Marrakech – The Moroccan government has announced plans to invest MAD 80 billion ($8 billion) to deploy 5G technology across the country, with the goal of covering 85% of the population by 2030. The announcement came during the board meeting of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT), held Friday in Rabat under the chairmanship of Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch. The ambitious project will begin implementation by the end of 2025, with several major cities receiving 5G coverage in the initial phase. This initiative forms part of the broader 'Morocco Digital 2030' strategy, which aims to accelerate the country's digital transformation. During the meeting, ANRT Director General Azzelarab Hassibi presented the current state of telecommunications in Morocco. He noted that mobile phone services now reach 57 million subscribers, while internet users number approximately 40 million, representing a 90% penetration rate – significantly higher than the African continental average of 37%. These advancements have positioned Morocco as the leading African country in the 2025 International Telecommunication Union (ITU) rankings according to the Information and Communication Technology Development Index (IDI). The board meeting also addressed territorial disparities in telecommunications coverage. Akhannouch stressed the importance of ensuring network coverage throughout the entire country, particularly in mountainous regions. He instructed the ANRT to identify areas with limited or no coverage and to coordinate with relevant government departments and the private sector to provide citizens with reliable, high-quality telecommunications services. As part of this effort, the board approved a national survey to identify remote localities suffering from weak or non-existent telecommunications coverage. These areas will be progressively integrated into a targeted deployment program. Additionally, the ANRT announced an update to the National Frequency Plan to adapt to technological developments and support the country's socio-economic needs. The agency will continue implementing structural projects to extend high-speed internet access and fiber optic networks alongside the gradual introduction of 5G technology. This telecommunications expansion comes as the North African country prepares to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) later this year and co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. These events demand strong digital infrastructure to enable global media access and enrich visitor experience, as Morocco works to close the digital gap and improve development indicators. Attijariwafa bank launches open innovation program targeting AI solutions with startups
Attijariwafa bank unveiled its latest initiative yesterday: «Open Start by Wenov», an open innovation program designed to foster artificial intelligence solutions through strategic partnerships with startups. The banking giant is spearheading this effort through Wenov, its dedicated innovation arm, to collaborate with high-potential startups. This ambitious program will be supported by two prominent incubators, ensuring its implementation across various markets. In Morocco, CEED Morocco (Center of Entrepreneurship and Executive Development) will oversee 11 challenges identified within the bank and its specialized financing subsidiaries. Meanwhile, OST International will tackle four challenges from the group's international subsidiaries in Africa. The program adopts a tripartite approach, bringing together selected mature startups, Attijariwafa bank's technical and business experts, and the two support organizations. Participants will work together to develop Proofs of Concept focused on strategic themes of interest to the banking group, with artificial intelligence as the central theme for this year. Attijariwafa bank operates in 27 countries through its majority-owned banking subsidiaries, employing 21,293 people and serving 12 million clients across 7,417 branches.
