Schools in Nuh district of Haryana closed today: Here's why

Time of India2 days ago
All educational institutions in Haryana's Nuh district were ordered shut on Monday as the state government enforced sweeping restrictions ahead of the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra.
The move, aimed at averting a repeat of last year's communal violence, has brought academic activity in the region to a sudden halt.
The district administration cited "student safety and administrative convenience" as the rationale behind the blanket closure of schools. Both government and private institutions were directed to remain closed for the day, with the District Education Officer tasked with strict enforcement of the order.
Education disrupted as authorities prioritise security
The sudden directive has disrupted internal assessments, cancelled scheduled examinations, and thrown timetables into chaos. Several schools had mid-term tests planned this week, which now stand deferred indefinitely.
The order comes alongside a 24-hour suspension of mobile internet and bulk SMS services in the district. While some essential messaging services remain active, digital learning platforms have been rendered inaccessible.
For students preparing for board exams, the blackout has severed access to online study material, group discussions, and digital assignments.
Internet shutdown and school closure trigger concern
According to an official notification from the office of the Additional Chief Secretary (Home), mobile internet, data services, and bulk SMS facilities will remain suspended till 9 PM on July 14. The suspension, it stated, is aimed at curbing the spread of misinformation and preventing the mobilisation of disruptive elements through social media platforms.
While the administration has painted the measures as precautionary, critics argue the district's education system — already strained post-pandemic — is bearing the brunt of repeated law and order breakdowns.
Security lockdown overshadows academics
More than 2,500 security personnel have been deployed across Nuh, backed by DSPs, drone surveillance, checkpoints, and commando units. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been imposed, banning all public gatherings, arms (licensed or otherwise), and loudspeakers.
The annual religious procession, scheduled through sensitive zones, has been linked to the outbreak of communal violence in 2023, which left six dead. Officials say the administration is not willing to risk a repeat.
Students left in the dark
Students across the district remain in the dark, literally and figuratively. With no classes, no online access, and no clarity on when normalcy will resume, many fear extended disruption.
While the administration remains focused on neutralising any threat to law and order, the collateral damage to education in Nuh is mounting. With classrooms empty, exams paused, and digital learning suspended, students have once again become the invisible casualties in a district perpetually on edge.

Who is Bittu Bajrangi? Controversial cow vigilante who remains banned from stepping into Haryana's Nuh

Banned from the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra that took place in Haryana's Nuh on Monday, Raj Kumar, widely known as Bittu Bajrangi, is a self-styled cow vigilante and the leader of the Gau Raksha Bajrang Force. Emerging as a deeply divisive figure in Haryana, Bajrangi has been embroiled in numerous legal battles and controversies that have sparked widespread debate. While he gained notoriety for his alleged involvement in the 2023 Nuh communal violence, a high-profile incident that drew significant attention, Bajrangi's actions have consistently attracted scrutiny, resulting in multiple FIRs being lodged against him for several offences, including assault and hate speech. His participation in prominent events, such as the recent Haryana Assembly election campaign, has kept him in the public spotlight. Bajrangi's most significant controversy stems from the July 31, 2023, Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra in Nuh, where communal violence erupted, resulting in six deaths, including two home guards and a cleric in Gurugram. He was arrested on August 15, 2023, following a complaint by Assistant Superintendent of Police Usha Kundu, who alleged he and his supporters carried swords and tridents during the procession, defied police orders, and attempted to snatch weapons from officers. The FIR charged him with rioting, assault to deter a public servant, and violations under the Arms Act. A viral video purportedly showed Bajrangi fleeing from police in Faridabad's Dabua before his arrest. He was granted bail on August 30, 2023, after a court noted no evidence that the weapons were used to cause harm. The Nuh district administration and police have since refused him permission to attend subsequent yatras. Before the Nuh violence, Bajrangi faced allegations of hate speech. On July 4, 2023, an FIR was registered at Dabua police station after he posted a video on social media allegedly inciting religious frenzy. Similar FIRs were filed at Dhauj and Mujesar police stations in Faridabad for provocative content targeting a specific community. Another FIR on August 1, 2023, cited a video where Bajrangi, dressed in saffron, was accompanied by a song with threatening lyrics, further fuelling accusations of communal provocation. He was briefly arrested but released on bail. In April 2024, Bajrangi was implicated in a violent incident in Faridabad's Parvatiya Colony. A video surfaced purportedly showing him assaulting a man, Shyam, in the presence of a police officer deployed for his security. Shyam alleged that a mob attacked him, suspecting he was Muslim, and handed him over to Bajrangi, who beat him, causing injuries to his head, hand, and body. An FIR was filed under IPC sections for causing hurt, wrongful restraint, and criminal intimidation. Bajrangi was arrested on April 7, 2024, and the policeman, SP Pramod Kumar, was dismissed for failing to intervene. The Faridabad police also issued a notice to cancel Bajrangi's firearm licence, citing misuse. Bajrangi's legal troubles continued with a death threat case. In July 2024, a minor from Rajasthan was apprehended for threatening Bajrangi with death unless he paid Rs 1 lakh, a case linked to the 2023 Nuh violence aftermath. In June 2025, he filed a complaint alleging threats via a viral Instagram video, leading to an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for promoting enmity and criminal intimidation. The death of Bajrangi's brother, Mahesh Panchal, in January 2024, added another layer of controversy. Panchal alleged he was set on fire in Faridabad in December 2023, but a forensic report found no traces of flammable liquids, contradicting his claims. No arrests were made, and Bajrangi's assertion of communal targeting was dismissed by police. Politically, Bajrangi contested the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections as an Independent candidate from Faridabad's NIT seat. Despite his criminal record, he campaigned for the BJP at a rally attended by Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath, raising eyebrows. A Congress leader claimed Bajrangi's popularity was limited, predicting minimal electoral impact. Ahead of the 2025 Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra, Bajrangi sought court permission to participate, despite being banned due to his 2023 involvement. He did not secure an urgent hearing. However, a Faridabad police spokesperson said that they had asked him to remain at home on Monday (the day of the yatra), which he complied with. In April, Bajrangi came out in strong support against a Palwal inspector who was suspended and arrested in connection with the brutal torture of a Muslim. The Palwal superintendent of police was transferred soon after.

Jalabhishek Yatra held peacefully in Nuh amid internet ban, security measures

Chants of 'Bum Bum Bholenath' and 'Har Har Mahadev' were interspersed with the usual greetings of 'Radhe Radhe' and 'Ram Ram' among devotees as the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra began from the Nalhar Shiv Temple in Haryana's Nuh on Monday. Vishram Kumar Meena, Deputy Commissioner (DC), Nuh, who was present at the site to oversee welfare and security measures for devotees, told The Indian Express that by noon, some 9,000 devotees had thronged Nuh, including some who were still on their way to the temple. 'By the end of the night, we expect the number to cross 30,000.' Additional arrangements were in place as violence had broken out during the yatra two years ago, in which six people were killed. On Sunday night too, a small Muslim shrine in Tauru was partially vandalised. 'I went to the site with a sub-divisional magistrate and a deputy superintendent of police at 6 am and we spoke to the shrine's caretaker, who is a Hindu, and he filed a complaint. It was an attempt by miscreants to disturb the peace here, but we spoke with the people living there and the situation did not escalate,' DC Meena said. The Jalabhishek Yatra, held on the first day of Sawan (a holy month for Lord Shiva devotees) began at around 12.30 pm and passed three Shiva temples, located in Nalhar, Ferozepur Jhirka and Singar, in Nuh. However, amid grey clouds and occasional spells of rain post 2 pm, the devotees were largely seen to be returning home after their visit to the first temple. School kids handed out booklets about the yatra and the temples to passersby, while filming the drones overhead with their phones. 'We are very happy with all the arrangements and to be here to pray to our Lord,' said a woman devotee who had reached Nalhar temple with her infant and friends. Late on Monday afternoon, the temple at Jhirka was teeming with devotees as shower spells brought some respite from the heat. Even as a 24-hour mobile internet ban was in place in the region from 9 pm on Sunday evening, internet was still partially accessible, courtesy signals from towers in the bordering state of Rajasthan. Meat and liquor shops along the route were kept closed to ensure that no sentiments were hurt, Meena added. 'We have been here and ready since 4 am when the first devotees came,' said a member of the Nalhar temple committee while handing out steel jugs to a flood of devotees who then poured over the water from it onto the Shivling as part of the prayers. Violence during Jalabhishek Yatra in 2023 The Jalabhishek Yatra was started by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) three years ago to 'revive holy Hindu sites' in the district where Muslims constitute 79.2% of the population as per the 2011 Census. In 2023, violence had broken out during the yatra, during which six people, including Bajrang Dal members and a cleric at a mosque in Gurgaon, were killed after bullets were fired from the hills behind the Nalhar temple. This time, one of the accused in the case, Faridabad resident and cow vigilante Bittu Bajrangi, was directed by the police to stay at home and not leave. 'We did not detain or arrest him. Only told him to stay home and he complied. The request was in view of possible law and order issues,' said a spokesperson for the Faridabad police. The move, along with coordination with peace committees, seems to have ensured peaceful congregations. Bajrangi could not be reached for a comment. 'All communities and sects came together harmoniously and provided all help to devotees, including water, and welcomed them with petals. All devotees said they were very happy and this was a showcase of the religious harmony here, notwithstanding what happened two years ago,' said Aazad Mohammad, former Haryana cabinet minister and Ferozepur Jhirka peace committee president. He ran at least eight of the 41 welcome points in Nuh, kiosks of sorts providing water and soft beverages to devotees. Mohammed added that after discussion and consultation with peace committees and the district administration, most shops and businesses along the route voluntarily kept their shutters closed for the day to ensure that the yatra faced no hassles.

Mazaar vandalised ahead of religious yatra in Haryana's Nuh; locals, police prevent communal flare-up, internet suspended

GURGAON: An attempt by miscreants to stoke unrest ahead of an annual religious yatra in Haryana's Nuh was thwarted by vigilant locals and swift police action in the early hours of Monday after a mazaar was vandalised in Tauru city of the district. Locals were quick to inform police, following which security measures were immediately ramped up for Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra. Two years ago, it was around this yatra that communal tension spiked, triggering riots in Nuh, Gurgaon and other south Haryana districts. Vandals targeted a walled mazaar at Sainipura, a site revered by people across communities, according to locals. A large crowd gathered around the site to prevent any further disruption. Police and officials from the district administration were informed as well," a local resident said. Checks, close police watch on city's border with Nuh A team of cops and administration officials reached the site and prevented the situation from flaring up. "An investigation has been initiated. We deployed additional security around the area after the incident," the official added. No untoward incident was reported during the yatra - scheduled for the first day of saawan every year - that went ahead as scheduled on Monday, but under close police watch. Internet was suspended in Nuh as a precautionary measure. By evening, officials said, the mazaar was restored as well. "Necessary action was taken by the administration after being informed about the mazaar incident. The subdivisional magistrate of Tauru, Jitendra Garg, and DSP Devendra Singh inspected the area and spoke to representatives from various communities. People were advised to trust information circulated by govt only and not fall for any provocative post on social media," said Vishram Kumar Meena, Nuh's deputy commissioner. According to police spokesperson Krishna, an FIR was yet to be registered till late on Monday evening. Security had been intensified across Nuh ahead of the yatra during which severe communal violence and rioting had broken out two years ago, resulting in six deaths, including those of two home guards. The violence, which spread to neighbouring Gurgaon and Palwal, saw arson and property damage. That year, the yatra was preceded by inflammatory social media posts, which had led to a charged atmosphere. Violence broke out when the yatra entered Nuh. Taking no chances this time, govt had deployed more than 2,500 security personnel, including dog squads and mounted police, across the district. Besides suspension of mobile internet, the administration also enforced Section 163 of the Indian Civil Defence Code 2023, prohibiting firecrackers, drones, light aircraft, kite flying, and meat sales in the area. Security was strengthened at the Gurgaon border too, where 500 personnel were deployed. "Checkpoints were set up at various places by Sunday evening itself to ensure no one crossed the border and reached Nuh with weapons. These checkpoints will be there till Tuesday morning," said DCP (south) Hitesh Yadav. The jalabhishek yatra has become an annual event over the past few years. It begins from the Nalheshwar Mahadev temple in Nalhar, crosses the Jhir temple in Ferozepur Jhirka before concluding at Shrangeshwar Mandir in Punahana. Cow vigilante Raj Kumar alias Bittu Bajrangi was placed under house arrest in Faridabad on Monday to prevent his participation in the yatra. Bajrangi, who was accused of inciting communal violence during the yatra in July 2023, has been denied permission by the Nuh police to attend this year's event. Before his house arrest, Bajrangi approached the Punjab and Haryana high court, seeking permission to join the procession. Meanwhile, Nuh DC Vishram Kumar Meena announced that internet and SMS services have been restored in the district, which were likely suspended as a precautionary measure in the lead-up to the yatra.
