Juror Tossed Out Of Sean 'Diddy' Combs Trial For Perceived 'Lying'; Judge Admonishes Defense For Claiming Racial Bias

Yahoo16-06-2025
Jurors in Sean 'Diddy' Combs' sex-trafficking trial are hearing a plethora of seemingly incriminating texts on abuse, 'freak-offs,' drugs and the defendant's 'Kryptonite' from the Bad Boy Records founder's ex-top aide Kristina Khorram. However, it is a slightly different panel from the previous several weeks of the New York City trial.
In a widely expected move and over the opposition of the defense, Judge Arun Subramanian this morning confirmed his decision of June 13 to dismiss Juror No. 6 from the high-profile trial. Immediately replaced by one of the alternates, the exit of the juror in question will not delay the proceedings at all.

The much-accused 55-year-old Combs was arrested in September 2024 in a New York hotel lobby by a phalanx of police and federal officials on federal charges of racketeering, sex trafficking, transportation to engage in prostitution and more. On trial in the lower Manhattan courtroom and facing testimony for his ex-longtime girlfriend Cassie Ventura, other former lovers and women alleging abuse, rape and assault, male escorts, past employees, Grammy-winning rapper Kid Cudie, and law enforcement officials, Diddy is facing life behind bars if found guilty by the still-eight men and four women jury.
The now ex-juror in question, a 41-year-old Black man who works in an administrative role at a state correctional facility, had started to give an alternating tale of where he actually lived, if it was in NYC or in New Jersey with a fiancée. 'The changing answers and inconsistency give the court worry about deception and lying,' the judge said last week, promising to ponder his decision over the weekend.
RELATED:
Over the weekend, the defense wrote to Judge Subramanian unsuccessfully once again requesting a mistrial and claiming, as they have on a number of occasions before, the U.S. Attorney's office for the Southern District of New York has a racial bias. The government's motion must be evaluated in light of the entire history of this investigation and prosecution, and not in isolation,' said defense attorney Alexandra A.E. Shapiro in the heavily redacted correspondence of June 15 (read entire letter here). 'Unfortunately, when considered against that background it is impossible to believe that this motion is merely a good-faith attempt to raise a valid question about the juror's integrity rather than an effort to take advantage of an opportunity to strike yet another black male from the jury.
Praising the court's 'well-reasoned conclusion' of June 13 on Juror No. 6's fate, U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton replied for his prosecution team early this morning.
'The Government respectfully writes in response to the defense's letter filed earlier this Evening' Clayton wrote, apparently getting his evenings slightly mistaken. 'Despite the Court's clear ruling on the necessity of removing Juror (redacted) the defense again attempts to cast the Government's motion to remove the juror as racially motivated. As the Court recognized on Friday after the defense first lobbed this baseless accusation, nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, as the Court laid out in detail after a careful review of the record, inconsistent statements made by Juror (redacted) during voir dire and in later colloquies relating to basic biographical information indicated a lack of candor.' (Read the government's response here).
Almost first thing Monday, before the jury was brought in, Judge Subramanian told the prosecution and the defense that he was still removing Juror No. 6.
The usually mild mannered judge also directly addressed the issue of racial bias.
'The defense asked the Court to base its decision on race,' he told the courtroom, with a pretty placid Combs sitting nearby. 'That would be inappropriate. So, Juror 6 is excused and is replaced by the first alternate.'
Promising to deal with an issue involving another juror later Monday, Judge Subramanian added of Juror No. 6: 'As to the defense's allegation of prosecutorial misconduct here, that is inviting the Court to make a decision based on race – and cannot be granted.'
With that, the revamped jury was brought in and testimony continued in the prosecution's case. The new Juror No. 6 is a 57-year-old manufacturing architect who lives in Westchester County with his family. He is White.
Emphasizing so-called 'summary witnesses' at this point, the feds are expected to end their presentation later this week. The defense has estimated its case could take up to four weeks, with no ironclad decision yet if Combs will testify.
At the start of the trial, the judge told the jurors and alternates that the trial would be over by the July 4 holiday. For anyone who has a calendar, that penciled in deadline is looking pretty unlikely at this juncture.

Nelly Attacks Kamala Harris Supporters After Fans Blast Him For Trump Inauguration Support

Nelly and his wife Ashanti are promoting a new unscripted reality television series aimed at peeling back the layers of the pair's relationships and musical careers, along with the requisite press runs. Some fans online have yet to forgive Nelly for appearing onstage during President Donald Trump's inauguration celebration, prompting the St. Louis star to call out supporters of former Vice President Kamala Harris and more. The Shade Room shared a clip of Nelly sitting with Hot 97's Ebro Darden doing promo with Ashanti for the pair's Peacock series, Nelly & Ashanti: We Belong Together. The clip shows the 'Hot In Herre' artist discussing how he has never endorsed any presidential candidate and pushing back against the assertion that he's a supporter of Trump after the performance. As it often happens with The Shade Room, fans began hurling barbs in Nelly's direction, which got his attention via a lengthy response in where he defends his actions, blasts Kamala Harris, criticized her intteracial marriage, and stood up for Snoop Dogg, who also caught the ire of fans for assumed support of President Trump. From The Shade Room: ''ll put whatever up me and snoop do more in the community and have been doing for over 20 + years against any of you that are just on here talking trash and have no stats to back up what you mean to the community .. from the black families that we employ to the black children that we help every day and all year through our nonprofits, whether we're sending kids to schools on scholarships to HBCU or helping young black boys in la 'gang central ' with his junior football programs which many players have went on to go to the NFL and live their dreams, .. and on top of that we are 'Black Men' married to beautiful Black women with black children .. should be inspiring to most but that some of y'all have a problem with because the 'prosecutor who has probably locked up more black men that we've helped woman of color with the white husband and white kids Did not win the election.. again I reiterate, I did not campaign for anyone. I do not tell people who to vote for. I respect and love our country from top to bottom good and bad… and I am very aware that it's a lot of things in this country that we need to work on the right is too far right and the left is too far left. .. I'm a military baby with a grand uncle who is a Tuskegee airmen and red tail that was very prideful for his country I told you it's my respect for the office meaning any president that calls upon Nelly it would be a honor.. nothing to do with money. Nothing to do with race but if you wanna make it about race, then let's goooooooooooooo I find it very interesting. That's so many of you would dump on the two black men that's married to black women that has black children because the '' woman of color with the white husband and white kids. Didn't win..!! ‘The Bear' ‘Worm' Episode Exposes Microaggressions Black Women Face In The Workplace

Source: Photo: Courtesy of FX / Photo: Courtesy of FX Sydney Adamu was minding her business, unraveling her box braids on Season 4, Episode 4 of The Bear, when a voice on the other end of the line interrupted her much-deserved moment of peace. The call, which was presented as an opportunity, was more of a disguised demand and blatant disregard of Sydney's boundaries. Shapiro, Sydney's employee Carmen 'Carmy' Berzatto's rival, had been interested in hiring her since season two. Sydney's Black girl magic and talent are the secret sauce at 'The Bear' and Shapiro knows it; he was counting on her NOT to know it. Industries benefit from Black women feeling like they can not say no. Shaprio was so invested in his dreams, he couldn't sense Sydney's hesitation. This is a familiar experience for many Black women, including myself. We are expected to leap at any opportunity because there are so few out there for us. The sous chef, played masterfully by Golden Globe-winner Ayo Edebiri, had ONE day off to get her extra small knotless braids done. She deserved that after a week of dealing with pasta timings and scallop placements. But that was stolen from her by entitlement. According to the American Psychological Association , microaggressions are 'brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, and environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults to the target person or group.' Written by Edebiri and Lionel Boyce, the episode is titled 'Worms.' It reflects the realities of what it is like to be a Black woman in the workplace. It shows the tough choices black women have to make at work and the ways they are punished for prioritizing themselves. Microaggressions can come in the form of unreasonable expectations. Despite Sydney having an important hair appointment, Shapiro wouldn't taken no for an answer. He crossed the line instead by asking how much time the hair appointment would be. He felt entitled to her time. He incorrectly assumed it would be two hours. She corrected him, and he was in shock about the length of time exceeding his expectations. Her appointment was in her cousin's living room, but it was still an appointment. He shared that shock, putting her in an awkward position. He refused to let it go. It was unfathomable to him that he might have to ask to see her in advance. Eager to end the conversation, Sydney moved her appointment. She accommodated him because he pressed her. He felt comfortable pressing her. That is a problem. Chefs have insane schedules, and it's understandable that they might call at the last minute, but it is not understandable that they wouldn't accept a refusal from someone who isn't even not working for them yet. That's cringey and a red flag. You shouldn't have to provide context about your edges, kinks, and coils for someone to accept your word. Related: Quinta Brunson, Niecy Nash And Ayo Edebiri Win Big At The Emmys Sydney arrived at Shapiro's soon-to-be restaurant, on her day off with her hair tucked underneath a knitted cap to M.O.P.'s iconic 'Ante Up' blasting as she walked in. He then asked her if she heard of M.O.P. and offered some token facts about the group. There's a fine line between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. There's nothing wrong with a white person acknowledging Black culture, but there is something wrong with them assuming someone's musical preferences because of the color of their skin. Mansplaining hip-hop history to earn brownie points is also not it. This is one of many microagressions in this episode. His pointed comment about a desire to infuse Afro-Caribbean influences into the restaurant's menu was a desperate attempt to entice the well-rounded chef by appealing to her Blackness, and placing her in a culinary box. He makes assumptions instead of collaborating. It's uncomfortable. Sydney called Shapiro after her appointment, and he asks if she has seen Good Hair . See where this is going? This happens across industries industry. Shapiro promised Sydney autonomy, but his actions prove he isn't capable of seeing her as his professional equal. His performative allyship shadows his every good intention. Janicza Bravo directed the story with care, zooming in on the little moments that cause friction in the professional lives of Black women. The Italian family running The Bear may not be experts on intersectionality, but they are consistent. They expose everyone to the same 'energetically musty' environment. Shapiro pretended to value Sydney more than he did. Sometimes, a well-meaning white person can be more dangerous than an outwardly hateful one. That said, the Berzattos are broke, and it is truly awful that Sydney has to choose between sustainable income and emotional security. We should be able to come to work, enjoy our day off, and get paid enough to live off without being asked invasive questions about our beauty procedures. Shapiro insulted Sydney the second that she said no to him. He started attacking her skills and acting like she was missing out on a great opportunity to learn from him. The talent he praised her for and was chasing after suddenly wasn't good enough because it wouldn't bend to his will. He didn't feel disappointed that she wasn't joining him. He felt disrespected. This was a person who saw Sydney as a woke accessory. No amount of anti-racist reading lists was going to fix his core issue. He expected her to be grateful for the chance to assist him. Did he call her a slur? No. But he was the disrespectful one. Sydney went with the devil she knew. Shapiro accused her of staying on a sinking ship, but that was her decision to make, and she had the right to make it. Season 4 of The Bear is now streaming on Hulu.
