DGS sources said that those affected, including the fisherfolk, need not worry as their grievances would be addressed. "Since it would be challenging for the fisherfolk to come forward with claims themselves, the state govt will take the lead role in coordinating with them as they will have the actual data. Whatever grievances they have will be addressed.
The insurance company would try to take care of losses, including the loss of their livelihood," said deputy nautical adviser Capt Anish Joseph, the nodal officer appointed for the purpose.
An SOP would soon be formed to deal with the compensation claims arising from the sinking.
Sources also said that the insurance companies involved are reputable and are part of the international group of the protection and indemnity (P&I) clubs.

"On Monday, one of their officials from London, along with a few other officials from India, will be arriving to meet the govt agencies to facilitate the claim process along with the nodal officer," said sources.
The nodal officer will be travelling to Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kanyakumari to meet with govt officials. Sources said that setting up district-wise cells to facilitate the process was also under consideration.
Sources added that the first part will be the submission of the claims, then there will be scrutiny from the insurance side, after which the payout is likely to happen. "We want only fisherfolk to come forward, which is why the state govt is to take the lead," said a source adding that bogus claims can derail or delay the process.
The govt will also be making claims for compensation since response measures are being undertaken by Coast Guard as well as the state govt.
Sources added that salvage operations are also underway, and as per the water sampling tests so far, the water levels were not at a level that causes concern, said sources.
Meanwhile, a special National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan (NOS-DCP) meeting chaired by director general of Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Paramesh Sivamani was conducted on Friday to review the pollution response action plan post the sinking of the vessel. Stakeholders from multiple govt agencies collaborated to discuss response efforts, ensuring a unified approach to protect the sensitive ecosystems of Kerala and south Tamil Nadu's coastline and safeguard the livelihoods of fisherfolk affected by the incident, ICG said in a post on X.

Mumbai: The heirs of Partition, who were displaced from their homes for a second time, are finally experiencing a modicum of relief. Residents of 19 Mhada buildings in GTB Nagar near Sion, which were declared dilapidated and demolished by BMC in 2020, see a ray of hope with the sanction of the redevelopment proposal. These 1,200 Punjabi and Sikh families had come to India from Pakistan in the aftermath of Partition. In 2020 they found themselves suddenly without a roof. Today, five years later, soil tests are underway, and drone surveys are mapping out their future homes. The residents recall that the buildings had become perilously unstable. Deep cracks spidered across walls, moss claimed damp corners, and broken stairs led to flats that balanced on weakened pillars. A ceiling slab once gave way, sending chunks of concrete crashing onto the floor below. Encroachments pressed extra rooms onto already shaky structures, and every groan or creak warned that the structure could collapse entirely. The residents will be given new 635 sq ft flats with five years of maintenance covered by Mhada, and monthly rent of Rs 20,000 until completion. "It's more than just a few buildings," says 63-year-old Balwinder Singh. "It's our lives coming back together." It will be at least four years before the towers are built. "But at least we see a timeline," they say. Paras Duggal sums it up, "Soon, our community will be home again."

Realtor arrested in silk city for swindling Rs 5cr from 200 buyers
Berhampur: A 43-year-old realtor was arrested here on Sunday for allegedly cheating several persons of Rs 5 crore on the pretext of providing residential plots. Police said the accused, identified as Chetan Kumar Choudhury of Gosaninuagaon, collected monthly instalments from homebuyers through his office staff since Aug 2019 and assured to allot them plots in Sept 2021. When customers who deposited the money on instalment basis brought their receipts and claimed their plots on the due dates, Choudhury alleged the receipts were fake and he didn't have knowledge about them, police said. A Santosh Kumar Patra of Lanjipalli, who had been engaged by the accused to collect the instalments, alleged he had faced harassment from buyers and even received threats from Choudhury. He lodged an FIR against the accused with Gosaninuagaon police station on Saturday. Based on his complaint, a criminal case was registered against Choudhury under different sections of BNS and an investigation launched. "Preliminary investigation revealed the accused swindled over Rs 5 crore from around 200 people on the pretext of providing residential plots though a monthly investment scheme," said Saravana Vivek M, SP of Berhampur.
