As Squid Game finale approaches, a look back at creator Hwang Dong-hyuk's prior work including Silenced, Miss Granny
As the Squid Game finale approaches, series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk's past body of work has garnered increased attention and popularity. This has been the case as early as season 1's runaway success, with Netflix listing Hwang Dong-hyuk's past work such as Silenced and Miss Granny on the streaming service after it became clear that Squid Game was turning out to be a smash hit.
Prior to Squid Game's success, however, Hwang Dong-hyuk had often struggled to get his projects off the ground. In fact, the idea for Squid Game itself came up when he was unsuccessfully trying to pitch a different movie idea. With Squid Game season 3 right around the corner, however, it's worth revisiting the acclaimed and impactful body of work Hwang Dong-hyuk has been producing for over a decade.
Squid Game creator began his career with My Father and Silenced
Hwang Dong-hyuk began his filmmaking career with a number of short films such as Heaven and Hell and Desperation. He then attracted international attention with 2004's Miracle Mile, which won the Director's Guild of America (DGA) Student Award and a Student Emmy Award.Hwang Dong-hyuk's feature film debut was 2007's My Father, which focused on the true story of Korean-American Aaron Bates, who went on national television in search of his birth parents, only to discover his biological father was a death row convict.
Hwang Dong-hyuk's next film, 2011's Silenced, was based on the real-life sexual abuse scandal involving the Gwangju Inhwa School for the deaf. The school had been subject to a 2005 investigation which implicated the faculty and the principal in the abuse and molestation of their own students.Silenced brought the scandal back into South Korea's public consciousness and resulting in the reopening of investigations regarding the school, making it among Hwang Dong-hyuk's most impactful works. The film stars Gong Yoo, who also plays the salesman in Squid Game, and is available for streaming on Netflix.
Hwang Dong-hyuk went on to direct Miss Granny and The Fortress
After the heavy themes explored in My Father and Silenced, Hwang Dong-hyuk went for lighter fare with his next directorial effort, 2014's Miss Granny. The film's premise followed a 74-year old woman, who one day regains the appearance of her 20-year old self after a visit to a mysterious photo studio.Speaking at a Koran Film Council press conference for the film, Hwang Dong-hyuk addressed the lighthearted nature of the film by confirming that it was a deliberate creative decision. Miss Granny is available for streaming on Netflix and has been remade in India as 2019's Telegu release Oh! Baby.
In 2017, Hwang Dong-hyuk directed The Fortress, which was an adaptation of Kim Hoon's historical fiction novel Namhansanseong. The film follows the real-life Qing dynasty's invasion of Joseon, and how the embattled King Injo and his retainers sought refuge in the titular fortress. The film stars Lee Byung-hun, who'd go on to play the Front Man in Squid Game.

F1 India Box Office: Brad Pitt starrer amazes with a 40 percent growth on Saturday; Nets Rs 12.50 crore in 2 days and set to emerge a HIT
Joseph Krasinski's F1 starring Brad Pitt, Kerry Condon and others, showed a stiff 40 percent growth on its second day at the box office after a superb first day of Rs 5.25 crore. With Rs 7.25 crore net on day 2, the total of F1 stands at Rs 12.50 crore and by the end of the weekend, it should be Rs 20 crore net. The Day Wise Net India Collections Of F1 Are As Under F1 Stands At Rs 12.50 Crore Net After 2 Days In India F1 got a start and the strong word around the film should help it trend well in India, despite competition. The fact that it retains IMAX screens in week 2 as well shall ensure remarkable numbers even when Jurassic World Rebirth hits theatres next week. Final collections in the range of the superhit Final Destination: Bloodlines can't be ruled out strictly by the kind of acceptance that it enjoys. That would also make F1 among the highest grossing original (not part of any IP) movies in the country. F1 Crushes Pre-Release Predictions Rather Comfortably The global numbers of F1 through Friday have come and they are around USD 64.50 million. A global weekend pushing to USD 150 million is what is expected now. The opening weekend projections prior to the release were around USD 100 million and they shall be crushed rather comfortably, now. The movie's high budget won't be easy to recover theatrically. But if F1 manages to cross USD 500 million globally by the end of its run, it will be seen as a good result if not great; especially given the pessimism in the trade because its release is right before giants like Jurassic World Rebirth and Superman. F1's Numbers Show That Brad Pitt Still Has The Ability To Pull Audiences To Theatres With F1, Brad Pitt has shown that he still has it in him as far as getting people to theatres is considered. The next movie the actor works on is a Netflix original. His next theatrical venture is waited for with bated breath. F1 plays in theatres now. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates on F1 and Brad Pitt.

The Waterfront Season 2 in the works? Everything we know about Netflix's southern crime drama
The Waterfront may have only just premiered, but after rocketing to the top of Netflix's global Top 10, fans are already desperate for more. Released on June 19, the eight-episode crime drama created by Kevin Williamson follows the Buckley family, a struggling fishing dynasty in North Carolina, who get caught up in a violent drug smuggling war, according to a People report. In a bold season finale, the Buckleys took down dangerous smuggler Grady (Topher Grace), ending in a high-stakes yacht standoff and a dramatic kill-shot by Cane (Jake Weary). Although Netflix has not yet confirmed a second season, Williamson earlier told The Hollywood Reporter that he originally pitched the series as a three-season arc, with potential to go even further. Williamson told THR that three seasons would be a solid number, but he could go up to five seasons if the show were successful. As per the People report, with Grady's death being confirmed, Williamson hinted that Season 2 will be introducing a new primary antagonist: likely from the Parker family, who allied with the Buckleys in Season 1 but have more secrets to unravel. Williamson reportedly explained that the Parker family will become Waterfront Season 2's big conflict. He said there will be additional Parker family members, who will likely be equally as complicated as the Buckleys, adding that they could even be more dangerous than Grady. Even though no cast has been officially confirmed, Williamson expressed excitement about bringing back Jake Weary (Cane) and Rafael L Silva (Shawn), Harlan's secret son. Williamson further stated that getting to work with Rafael more would be incredible. He added that there's a bond which can't be broken. Given that most of the Buckleys survived the finale, including Melissa Benoist's Bree, who was shot and rescued, their stories could continue to unfold, the People report added. Grady, who had kidnapped Bree and her kid, Diller, was ambushed by Harlan and Cane. Cane ended up shooting Grady in the face during the showdown, then tossed him into the water. At the end of the season, the Buckleys were back together at Bree's hospital bed, so fingers crossed things will get better, even if there is still trouble ahead. You can stream all eight episodes of The Waterfront Season 1 on Netflix. Will there be a Season 2 of The Waterfront? Netflix has not confirmed a renewal yet, but creator Kevin Williamson has pitched a three-season arc and is hopeful. Is Grady dead? Yes. Kevin Williamson confirmed that Grady was 'definitely dead' after the Season 1 finale. What will Season 2 focus on? Season 2 could follow the Parker family as the new threat, with more Buckley family drama and a fresh villain at the center. Where can I watch The Waterfront? The full first season is available to stream on Netflix now.
