Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff scheduled to return from shoulder surgery Sunday in Miami
NEW YORK (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff is scheduled to make his long-awaited return to the majors this weekend in Miami.
The two-time All-Star planned to throw a bullpen Thursday at Citi Field before Milwaukee's game against the New York Mets. He is lined up to start Sunday against the Marlins in the finale of a three-game series.
Woodruff hasn't pitched in the big leagues since undergoing shoulder surgery after the 2023 season. He is 46-26 with a 3.10 ERA in 115 career starts and 15 relief appearances.
'He's such a big part of the Brewers organization,' manager Pat Murphy said. 'I'm really excited for him.'
Woodruff left his first rehab stint this season with tendinitis in his right ankle. He was pitching for Triple-A Nashville again on June 3 when a 108 mph line drive struck him in the right elbow, leaving a bruise that delayed his return.
The 32-year-old right-hander was back on the mound Sunday for Nashville, allowing four runs, four hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings against Jacksonville. He threw 53 of 82 pitches for strikes in his final minor league tuneup.
In other injury news, the Brewers returned outfielder Blake Perkins from his rehab assignment after he exited Wednesday's game with Nashville because of groin discomfort.
'Often times when guys go down for their rehab assignments, they're pushing and pushing and pushing to get back and to get ready,' Murphy said. 'He tweaked it a little bit. Maybe this is a blessing because maybe he didn't have enough at-bats anyways to come back. It isn't major in any way, and he'll be back."
Perkins hasn't played in the big leagues this season after fracturing his right shin while taking batting practice in spring training.
'He's already been seen by a doctor,' Murphy said. "He's going to take five to 10 days ... and see how it progresses and then get back to his rehab."
Nestor Cortes (left elbow) pitched three shutout innings Wednesday for Nashville in his first rehab start. He threw 25 of 37 pitches for strikes against Memphis, allowing one hit and striking out four without a walk.
'We know the kid can pitch. He's done it. That's not going to go away,' Murphy said. 'It's just a matter of building him up.'
Cortes made just two starts for Milwaukee this year before going on the injured list in early April. The 30-year-old lefty is recovering from a flexor strain in his pitching elbow and hopes to rejoin the Brewers just after the All-Star break.

Wisconsin's highest-rated players in EA Sports College Football 26
Wisconsin's top-rated players in EA Sports College Football 26 shouldn't come as much of a surprise. They are: senior cornerback Ricardo Hallman (90 overall) and senior right tackle Riley Mahlman (89 overall). The veterans are two of the program's longest-tenured returning starters entering the 2025 season. Each joined the Badgers with the class of 2021, Mahlman as a four-star recruit and Hallman as one of the class' more underrated prospects. They then each took similar paths to playing time. Hallman started eight games as a redshirt freshman in 2022, totaling nine tackles, one for loss, one interception and three pass deflections. Mahlman also entered that season as a starter, though only played in seven games after suffering an injury during the season-opener. The two have been some of the Big Ten's best at their respective positions since that shared breakthrough season. Hallman was a Third Team All-American in 2023 after a 34-tackle, seven-interception campaign. Mahlman did not share the same accolade, though he has been among ProFootballFocus' highest-graded Big Ten offensive linemen over the last two seasons, plus again projects as one of the conference's best entering 2025. The cornerback and offensive lineman will lead the Badgers' defense and offense, respectively, in 2025. Hallman is the team's clear top cornerback, and may need to shoulder a greater responsibility with top underclassman Xavier Lucas gone to Miami. Mahlman, on the other hand, will again slot in at right tackle to begin the season. He will anchor an offensive line that lost starting left tackle Kevin Heywood to a spring practice injury. Complete story on friendship of Sixers' Trendon Watford, Tyrese Maxey
CAMDEN, N.J. -- The Philadelphia 76ers made a move in free agency to bring in Trendon Watford as they look to build their roster back toward championship contention. When healthy, the Sixers have as good a chance as anybody to win in the East, but it's important to build a strong roster around their star trio. Enter Watford who is a terrific passer and playmaker for somebody his size at 6-foot-9 and will look to give Philadelphia versatility, depth, and playmaking which is paramount in today's NBA. On top of filling a new needs for the Sixers, it helps that Watford has a close friendship with Tyrese Maxey. Watford stated that Maxey gave him a call in free agency, which shows how close they are, but Watford went deep into the story of their friendship. "Well, his birthday is the day before mine. Let's just say that," Watford smiled and laughed. "We were at a high school camp together in I think 9th grade. He claims that the group of guys I was with weren't really talking to him because he wasn't highly ranked yet or whatever. We locked in from that point on. My family knows his family. We ended up being roommates for I think the McDonald's game." That 2019 McDonald's All-American game was stacked with talent as Watford was on the East Team and Maxey was on the West. The two of them were able to build this friendship in high school and have been able to keep it going through college and in the NBA. "We ended up just kicking it off, man," Watford explained. "I know his sister, his uncle, his brother, everybody in the family. It's definitely an experience that we talk about and it's crazy that now we're teammates. I was able to talk some trash to him when we got the win here (in Philly) last (in Brooklyn). And now we're teammates, so I'm excited." Even as Watford was preparing for the league during his time at LSU, the two kept in contact. Maxey was a rookie with the Sixers and he talked with Watford to help him understand what's coming at the next level. Even he walked into the team's facility in Camden, NJ for the first time on Thursday, Maxey gave him a call. The All-Star guard is excited to have one of his best friends with him now in Philadelphia to keep things moving in a positive direction. "I remember talking to him my second year in college, which was his rookie year, and just talking to him about some of the stuff he was dealing with, I already had a good idea of what I was coming into," Watford added. "Man, it's great. We can't believe it, honestly. We're still in shock. He called me right before this and was like, 'Man, I can't believe you're in Philly and going to go to the facility.' It's crazy. It's crazy to be on the team right now." Now, the two friends who have stuck with each other for quite some time now will look to help the Sixers bounce back from a miserable 2024-25 season.
