Tour de France: Van der Poel holds off Pogačar to win rainy stage 2

BOULOGNE-SUR-MER, France (AP) — Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel won the hilly second stage of the Tour de France on Sunday after holding off defending champion Tadej Pogačar and two-time winner Jonas Vingegaard in a sprint to the line.
Van der Poel took the race leader's yellow jersey from his Alpecin–Deceuninck teammate Jasper Philipsen in a second career stage victory on the Tour. Neither rider is considered an overall contender.
Stage 2 was delayed by about 15 minutes after team buses arrived late to their parking spots because of heavy morning rain. Fans lined the roads wearing raincoats and riders wore light rain jackets amid wet and blustery conditions on the slightly hilly 209-kilometer (130-mile) trek from Lauwin-Planque to Boulogne-sur-Mer in northern France.
The longest trek of this year's race featured about 4 kilometers of climbing suited to allrounders like the three-time Paris-Roubaix classic winner Van der Poel and former Cyclo-cross star Wout van Aert.
Greasy roads increased the risk of spills and, after about 45 kilometers, Yevgeniy Fedorov and Andreas Leknessund both fell. They were able to continue as the weather dried out but it stayed windy, leading to a couple more minor crashes.
A strong headwind greeted riders approaching the finish as they took on the day's three consecutive climbs — short and sharp but very modest ones compared to the giant Alpine and Pyrenean ascents later in the three-week race.
None of the main Tour contenders could launch a decisive attack, although Vingegaard tried with 5 kilometers left.
Instead, it was Van der Poel — nicknamed 'The Flying Dutchman' — who surged clear and then withstood Pogačar's late burst, having also beaten the Slovenian star at Paris-Roubaix in April.
He crossed the line in 4 hours, 45 minutes, 41 seconds with Pogačar in second place and Vingegaard in third recording the same time.
In the overall standings, Pogačar is four seconds behind Van der Poel. Vingegaard is another two seconds back.

Twins top Cubs 8-1 behind strong start from Simeon Woods Richardson and late power surge

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Simeon Woods Richardson outpitched Shota Imanaga with five scoreless innings, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago Cubs 8-1 on Tuesday night. Ryan Jeffers had three RBIs and the first of three homers for the Twins in a six-run eighth off Porter Hodge, who was also taken deep by Willi Castro and Harrison Bader and got just one out. Royce Lewis drove in two runs, and All-Star Byron Buxton and Jeffers greeted Imanaga (5-3) with back-to-back doubles to start a two-run first inning. The left-hander, who was an All-Star as an MLB rookie last year, finished six innings for the first time since April 4 after missing nearly two months with a strained hamstring. The Twins again shielded Woods Richardson (5-4) from the toughest matchups, turning to the bullpen for the third time through the heart of the order of Kyle Tucker, Seiya Suzuki, Pete Crow-Armstrong and Michael Busch, who present as daunting a challenge in the second through fifth spots as there is in baseball. The decision paid off, despite Woods Richardson throwing only 61 pitches, against the highest-scoring team in the major leagues . Brock Stewart struck out Dansby Swanson with runners at the corners to end the sixth. Justin Turner's 200th career home run in the ninth ended the shutout. Key moment Griffin Jax gave up a single and a walk with a two-run lead to start the eighth, before striking out Suzuki and Crow-Armstrong and retiring Busch on a line drive to right. Key stat Woods Richardson, who spent nearly a month in Triple-A earlier this season, has allowed just 11 hits in 26 innings with a 1.38 ERA over his last five starts. Up next RHP Cade Horton (3-2, 4.15 ERA) starts the middle game of the series on Wednesday for the Cubs, opposite Twins RHP David Festa (2-3, 5.48). ___ AP MLB:

Marlins extend road winning streak to 11 with 12-2 win over Reds

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Miami Marlins extended their franchise-record road winning streak to 11 with a 12-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. It's the longest road winning streak in the major leagues since the Phillies won 13 straight away from home in 2023. Eury Pérez (2-2) made his sixth start for the Marlins since returning this season from Tommy John surgery and only two hits including Matt McLain's solo homer, his 10th, in the first inning. Pérez struck out eight and didn't walk a batter. After Nick Martinez (6-9) retired the first six batters he faced, the Marlins collected six consecutive hits off him in the third, including a two-run double by Xavier Edwards to take a 7-1 lead. Martinez, who made his first start at Great American Ball Park since taking a no-hitter into the ninth against the Padres, allowed a career-high 10 earned runs on seven hits. The Marlins caught a break in the seven-run third inning when Agustín Ramírez's high-hopper went just over the head of Reds' third baseman Noelvi Marte to drive home another run and keep the rally going. Up next Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott (7-1, 2.15 ERA) will make his first start since being named to the NL All-Star team and will face Marlins RHP Sandy Alcantra (4-8, 7.01) on Wednesday. ___

Misiorowski allows leadoff homer to Ohtani, then dominates as Brewers beat Dodgers 3-1

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jacob Misiorowski bounced back after allowing a leadoff homer to Shohei Ohtani by striking out 12 in six innings as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the slumping Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 on Tuesday night. The NL West-leading Dodgers have lost five straight. Ohtani opened the game by connecting on an 0-2 curveball from Misiorowski and delivering a 431-foot shot over the center-field wall. Misiorowski (4-1) responded by striking out Los Angeles' next five batters and ended up yielding only four hits and one walk to outduel three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw. The 12 strikeouts represented a career high for the 6-foot-7 rookie right-hander, who was making his fifth start. The Brewers pulled ahead for good by scoring two runs off Kershaw in the fourth inning. Milwaukee added an insurance run when Sal Frelick homered off Kirby Yates in the eighth. Milwaukee's Jared Koenig, Abner Uribe and Trevor Megill didn't allow a baserunner over the last three innings. Megill worked the ninth for his 21st save in 24 opportunities. Kershaw (4-1) worked six innings and allowed two runs and six hits while striking out three and walking one. Milwaukee tied the game when Andrew Vaughn's single to center scored William Contreras, who led off the fourth with an infield hit. Isaac Collins singled home Jackson Chourio with the go-ahead run. Key moment The Dodgers wasted a golden opportunity to tie the game or take the lead against Misiorowski in the sixth. Ohtani walked and Mookie Betts singled to start the sixth inning, and they advanced when Freddie Freeman grounded to first. Ohtani attempted to score on Andy Pages' grounder to the left side of the infield, but third baseman Andruw Monasterio threw him out at the plate. Michael Conforto then grounded to first to strand runners at the corners. Ohtani's homer was his 31st of the season, the most by a Dodger before the All-Star break. Up next ___
