
IIT (BHU) launches AICTE-sponsored certification programme on IoT and smart manufacturing

QIP–PG Certification Programme titled 'IoT and Manufacturing: Methods, Processes, Applications and Technology' was inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Technology (
), Varanasi, on June 23.

The programme, organised by the Precision Engineering Hub (PEH), is supported by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) under its Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) and aims to upskill faculty members across India in emerging areas of digital technologies and smart manufacturing.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by Prof. N. K. Mukhopadhyay, Acting Director,
(BHU), and Tapash Kumar Nandy, Director, DIA-CoE.
The event was attended by key faculty members, including Prof. Santosh Kumar, PEH Coordinator, Prof. Sandeep Kumar, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and G. M. Karthik, Programme Coordinator.
The certification programme has drawn participation from 36 faculty members representing nine states and union territories, with 25 participants holding PhDs in disciplines such as Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics Engineering.
The course is delivered by eight faculty experts from IIT (BHU) and includes hands-on training in a dedicated IoT Lab, developed in collaboration with FITAS Robotics and Embedded Systems Pvt. Ltd. The programme also features guest lectures from industry leaders, offering participants critical insights into real-world applications.
In his inaugural address, Prof. Mukhopadhyay underscored the importance of equipping educators with practical knowledge in IoT, automation, and smart systems, calling the initiative a vital step in enhancing India's capabilities in Industry 4.0 and advanced manufacturing.

Nandy emphasised the significance of academia–industry collaboration and encouraged participants to align their teaching and research with national priorities, particularly in areas such as materials innovation and strategic technology development.
Highlighting the interdisciplinary structure of the programme, Karthik noted its focus on professional growth, collaborative learning, and skill transfer, empowering faculty to bring cutting-edge technological education to their students and institutions.

Indian researchers develop diagnostic device to detect early-stage bone cancer
New Delhi: In a major scientific breakthrough, researchers from IIT (BHU) in Uttar Pradesh have developed a miniaturised, self-reporting diagnostic device that can detect early-stage bone cancer with high precision. The first-of-its-kind sensor detects osteopontin (OPN) -- a key biomarker for bone cancer. The device is reagent-free, portable, and cost-effective and is ideal for rural healthcare, said the research team led by Dr. Pranjal Chandra from the School of Biochemical Engineering. The device works much like a glucose metre and enables quick, accurate, and on-the-spot detection, even in resource-limited settings. The device uses a custom sensor surface composed of gold and redox-active nanomaterials, allowing it to function similarly to a glucose meter. 'This technology simplifies cancer detection and empowers primary health centres,' said Prof. Chandra. The findings are published in the prestigious journal Nanoscale (Royal Society of Chemistry, UK). OPN is a crucial biomarker associated with osteosarcoma -- a highly aggressive form of bone cancer that primarily affects children and adolescents. While current methods to detect OPN are costly and time-consuming, the new device offers rapid and accurate results with minimal equipment. It is designed as a reagent-less immunosensor, which enables on-the-spot and affordable testing. It is especially beneficial in rural and resource-constrained areas where early cancer detection is often delayed. Cancer is a major public health concern in India, with rising incidence rates and significant mortality. Lauding the innovation, Director Prof. Amit Patra called it 'a prime example of technology with a human face'. He said it contributes to precision medicine and national health priorities. He added that the innovation aligns with the government's Make in India and Start-up India initiatives. A patent application has been filed, and efforts are underway to convert the prototype into a smartphone-compatible diagnostic kit for remote healthcare access, the researchers said.

IIT-Madras' Zanzibar campus launches undergraduate programme in Chemical Process Engineering
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras' Zanzibar campus has launched a new Bachelor of Science (BS) programme in Chemical Process Engineering for the academic Year 2025-26, officials said on Friday. The four-year full-time undergraduate degree programme in the Zanzibar campus is open to candidates of all nationalities, including Indians. "The programme offers a comprehensive curriculum blending core chemical engineering fundamentals with practical laboratory work, industry-aligned projects and electives that encourage interdisciplinary learning," a senior official said. The last date to apply is July 6. "It would be delivered by a distinguished faculty team from IIT Madras, IITM Zanzibar, and partner institutions, ensuring rigorous academic standards and global relevance," the official added. Preeti Aghalayam, Director-in-charge, Zanzibar campus, IIT Madras, said, "As a Chemical Engineer myself, it is such a pleasure that we are bringing this programme to IITM Zanzibar. We believe that it will be a very meaningful step forward for the campus." The other courses currently offered by the IIT-Madras' Zanzibar Campus are a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Data Science and AI, a two-year Master of Technology degree in Data Science and AI, and another in Ocean Structures.
