Thailand's top banks Krungthai, GSB and SCB hit pause for maintenance, customers warned of service disruptions
The Nation reported that Krungthai Bank, the Government Savings Bank (GSB) and Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) have all announced scheduled outages that will temporarily take down a wide range of core banking functions — including mobile apps, ATM access, and credit card transactions.
Customers have been urged to plan ahead, with services such as bill payments, international transfers, and even notifications on messaging platforms like LINE expected to be interrupted.
Krungthai Bank is implementing two separate maintenance periods. The first — affecting business services including the Krungthai BUSINESS platform — will begin at 10pm today and last until 6pm tomorrow, spanning 20 hours. Businesses have been advised to complete transactions in advance and avoid scheduling operations on June 14.
A second, shorter disruption will hit the bank's consumer app, Krungthai NEXT, early on June 20. The app will be unavailable from 1am to 6am. While services are expected to resume as normal, Krungthai has warned there may be delays in retrieving account statements.
The Government Savings Bank has scheduled upgrades to its credit card systems tomorrow, divided into two time slots — starting at 4:30am with an unspecified duration, followed by a second phase from 9:30am to 11am.
Customers will be unable to use key services during these periods, including online shopping, cash withdrawals, and transactions via the MyMo and GSB NOW apps. International ATM access and EDC card reader payments will also be impacted.
SCB is expected to carry out its own maintenance work, although full details were not immediately disclosed.
The banks have apologised for the inconvenience, emphasising the upgrades are essential to improve long-term service reliability and security.

PHNOM PENH, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's economy grew 5.9 percent in the first half of 2025, boosted by manufacturing sector, tourism, and agriculture, the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) said on Monday. The Southeast Asian nation's economy heavily relies on garment, footwear, and travel goods exports, tourism, agriculture, and real estate and construction. The real estate and construction sectors continued to experience sluggish growth during the January-June period this year. "Growth in the first half of this year has not been significantly affected due to the strength of Cambodia's economic base, as the impact of U.S. reciprocal tariffs and Cambodia-Thailand border dispute still has limit," NBC Governor Chea Serey said in a report. "The impact may occur in the second half of 2025," she said. According to the report, the kingdom's inflation stood at 3.5 percent in the first half of this year due to a rise in food prices. However, oil price declined during the period. The report also said that Cambodia's international reserves increased to 24.8 billion U.S. dollars as of June 2025, securing imports of goods and services for the next 7.5 months.

Singapore launches major economic review to boost global edge amid tech, geopolitical shifts
SINGAPORE, Aug 4 — Singapore will undertake an Economic Strategy Review (ESR) aimed at strengthening the nation's global competitiveness and economic relevance amid structural shifts such as geopolitical realignments and rapid technological disruptions. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry Gan Kim Yong said the ESR will comprise five committees that will develop longer-term strategies in the areas of global competitiveness, technology and innovation, entrepreneurship, human capital and managing the impact of restructuring. 'This is something that is very important at this particular juncture for us to review our key economic strategy to determine what is the path forward for us given the changes in the environment,' he said at a press conference today. Gan added that each committee will be co‑chaired by two political office‑holders, with participation from the private sector, unions and other relevant stakeholders. The committees will report to the Singapore Economic Resilience Taskforce (SERT), which he chairs. SERT was established in April to help businesses and workers navigate uncertainties arising from US tariffs and other global developments. 'We hope to be able to provide an update of the work of the committees sometime early next year, together with some of the key recommendations, and hope to publish the final report by the middle of next year,' Gan added. He noted that implementation timelines will vary depending on the nature of each recommendation. The ESR replaces the third workstream under SERT, which was previously tasked with developing longer‑term strategies and responses to support transformation of businesses and the workforce in the evolving economic landscape. The ESR secretariat said in a statement that the ESR will chart a forward-looking economic blueprint with clear actions to secure good opportunities for businesses and workers. Australia to raise foreign student cap to 295,000 in 2026, with priority for South-east Asians
SYDNEY, Aug 4 — Australia will raise its cap on foreign students by 9 per cent to 295,000 next year and prioritise applicants from South-east Asia, the government said today. Limits on places were announced last year as a way to rein in record migration that had contributed to a surge in housing prices, with 270,000 places made available for 2025. An additional 25,000 places were being granted in 2026 as the policy was successfully bringing down 'out of control' international student numbers, the government said. 'This is about making sure international education grows in a way that supports students, universities and the national interest,' Education Minister Jason Clare said in a statement. Australia granted nearly 600,000 student visas in the 2023 financial year, as international students returned to the country in record numbers following Covid-19. Australia's largest cohorts of students come from China and India. As well as introducing the cap on numbers, the government also more than doubled the visa fee for foreign students in 2024 and pledged to close loopholes in rules that allowed them to continuously extend their stay. The government's measures to curb migration were 'bearing fruit' and allowed for a modest increase in the cap in 2026, International Education Assistant Minister Julian Hill said. 'The numbers were growing out of control,' Hill told national broadcaster ABC. 'The government has taken tough decisions over the last 12 months, not always loved by the sector, to get the numbers down and get them to a more sustainable footing.' Roughly two-thirds of places will be allocated to universities and one-third to the vocational skills training sector. Larger, public universities would need to demonstrate domestic and international students had 'access to safe and secure housing' and recruit more students from South-east Asia to increase their individual allocations, the government said. It was important 'for Australia's future soft power that we continue to bring the best and brightest from our (South-east Asian) neighbours to have a bit of Australia with them for the rest of their life', Hill said.
