Free mental health support for LGBTQIA+ individuals and their family members in Madurai

The Hindu11-06-2025
To promote mental well being and create a safe space for LGBTQIA+ individuals, their friends, and family members, the Transgender Resource Centre in Madurai, in collaboration with the Omega Forum for Social Impact (OFSI), has been offering free mental health consultations from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. every Thursday.
The initiative, which began a month ago, has so far supported close to 18 individuals, with around 15 attending in person and three opting for phone-based sessions. Most of those who have sought help fall between the ages of 20 and 30. The counselling sessions are conducted by a psychological counsellor on the centre's premises .
The centre offers both individual and group counselling formats, with follow up sessions arranged based on the needs of each individual. Interns associated with the centre are also eligible to avail of the service.
S. Shalini, Project Manager at the Transgender Resource Centre, highlighted the prevalence of suicidal tendencies within the LGBTQIA+ community and stressed the importance of accessible mental health support. She noted that individuals who have participated in the sessions have shown visible improvement in emotional stability, with many overcoming suicidal thoughts.
Common concerns raised during sessions include relationship issues, family rejection, emotional indecision, fear, confusion about identity and future, lack of peace, and insomnia. The centre encourages individuals struggling with such challenges to fix an appointment and access the free counselling services.
Funded by OFSI, the programme is currently in its early phase. Plans are underway to expand its reach, particularly to rural areas. 'We hope to raise awareness by putting up posters near Primary Health Centres (PHCs) so that people in remote locations can also benefit,' said Ms. Shalini.
She further emphasised the need to introduce gender related studies in schools and colleges and to sensitise teachers, which she believes will foster greater societal understanding and inclusion.
Those interested in availing the counselling can visit the centre at 5, E2, E2 Street, Chinnachokkikulam, Madurai – 625002, or call 9360730317 / 9965140064 for appointments and information.
(Assistance for overcoming suicidal thoughts is available on the State's health helpline 104, Tele-MANAS 14416, Sneha's suicide prevention helpline 044-24640050 and Speak2Us mental health helpline 9375493754.)

Minister orders inquiry into Anakapalli DCHS and 21 medical staff for ‘dereliction of duties'

Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav ordered that an inquiry be conducted into the alleged irregularities committed by 22 medical staff at a government hospital in Anakapalli district. According to a press release from the Medical and Health Department on Sunday, a team from Anti-Corruption Bureau (ABC) had conducted surprise inspections at the hospital in February 2020 and submitted the findings to the department last month. Based on the ACB report, the Minister said that a speedy inquiry should be conducted and disciplinary action taken against the 22 medical staff of the hospital, including District Coordinator of Health Services (DCHS), nine doctors and 12 head and staff nurses. The hospital had been operating a canteen without a valid licence and did not have proper documentation of the food being served to patients, the release said. The canteen failed to serve quality food and the nurses did not perform their duties properly, the Minister said quoting the report. The ACB held the DCHS responsible for failing to supervise the workings of the hospital and suggested penalties for the the official and also disciplinary action against the other 21 medical staff for dereliction of duties. Meanwhile, the Minister said that the incident from 2020 reflects the situation of government hospitals under the previous regime. After the TDP-led NDA government came to power, regular meetings are being held to review and monitor attendance of medical staff and to check corruption in government hospitals, the Minister said. It has been made clear to the district-level officers that they would be responsible for proper implementation of health schemes and performance of medical staff, he added.

Low cancer rate in A.P. prompts govt. to go for another exclusive survey

Following the NCD Survey-3 that was taken up across the State to assess prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCD), including cancer, diabetes, and BP among the people of the State, Minister for Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav has announced that another survey, NCD-4, would be taken up from September focussing only on cancer. While a cancer survey is already being conducted in the State as part of the NCD-3 from November 2024, the results showed that cancer prevalence is too low in Andhra Pradesh. He said cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in the country, and felt the reasons for low prevalence in A.P. have to be properly examined through another survey. Speaking at a three-day workshop being held for health staff for the NCD-4 survey in Mangalagiri on July 24, Thursday, Mr. Satya Kumar Yadav said while as part of the ongoing survey, the State government had set a target of screening 4.10 crore people, so far, 70% of the target has been completed. Around 3 crore people have been screened for three types of cancer: oral, breast and cervical. Around 2.90 crore people have been screened for oral cancer, and 2 crore for breast and cervical cancers, the Minister said, adding the results showed that only 0.35% of the screened people were diagnosed with one of these cancers. The number is low when compared to the cancer incidence in the country, he added. The Minister said the results could be due to lack of awareness among people about cancer or due to 'lack of skills' among the health staff, or due to lengthy questionnaires or misconceptions among people. Lack of coordination among field-level workers and 'lack of supervision by senior health workers' could also be the reasons. While the NCD-3 survey has not brought out the desired results, it cannot be said that it has failed. It is commendable that the survey was carried out for 3 crore people despite challenges. The survey has given the department an understanding of its own strengths and weak points that can be addressed in the NCD survey 4. Having lost his mother and a sibling to cancer, the Minister said he is aware of the consequences of cancer, and expressed concern that around 75,000 new cancer cases are reported in the State every year and 30,000 people die annually. He said the NCD-4 survey would begin after the ongoing survey ends in August.
