Prayagraj: India's Siddharth marries Penelope from Greece with Vedic rituals during Maha Kumbh

Times of Oman26-01-2025
Prayagraj: Maha Kumbh 2025 witnessed a special fusion of Indian and Greek cultural heritage, Penelope from Greece and Siddharth from India decided to tie the knot during the religious congregation in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
The act of 'kanyadaan,' for Penelope was done by Swami Yatindranand Giri, Mahamandaleshwar of the Juna Akhara, along with the bride's mother and other relatives.
Opening on his experience, Siddharth said that they had decided to perform the marriage in the "most authentic manner" and Prayagraj currently is the best place in the "whole universe" for its divine nature.
"We are very grateful just to get married to each other, she is really special...When we decided on it, we wanted to do it in the most authentic manner which would be simple yet divine, and for that, we chose Prayagraj, Maha Kumbh, this specific date (January 26). We know that at this point of time that this is probably the best place not just in the country or in the world but the universe where all forms of divinity, pilgrimages everything is present here. You meet such great souls. We meet Maharaj ji (Swami Yatindranand Giri) and get his blessings and this is such a pleasure for the heart and the soul," Siddharth told ANI.
Being asked about marrying in Prayagraj with Vedic rituals, Siddharth said 'Sanatan Dharma' is an "ancient window to the world" and marriage, an important institution had to be performed in a 'Vedic' way.
"When we think about marriage, people are forgetting that marriage is a holy institution...it gives us an understanding that man and women are completers of each other, both are incomplete without the other. Following ancient tradition is not something to frown about. At the end of the day we are the one of the world's oldest civilisation...It is only sanatan dharma which is an ancient window to the rest of the world. Marriage being such an important institution to one's life, it had to be done that we did it today the vedic way," he told ANI.
Penelope opened up on her life's new chapter and her embracing of a new culture, and called her experience "magical beyond words". She said she had never attended an Indian wedding but experienced one herself being the bride.
"I think what has happened today is something magical beyond words and it is only when I see some of the pictures that I realise we were experiencing divine energy. I have never attended an Indian wedding, and today I was the bride so everything was new to me but at the same time very familiar. What happened was a ceremony, I was married with a more spiritual way, according to Vedic scriptures, and it was amazing," Penelope told ANI.
When Siddharth asked Penelope whether they should marry in India or in Greece, she chose the former option. She believes their experience was more "divine" and "spiritual" as compared to many others who just use weddings as an opportunity to party and drink.
"Actually he asked me where would you like to get married, Greece or India, and I am really glad that I said I want to do it in India. There are some things that have been changing over the years, like weddings are just another opportunity to party and get drunk and for us it was more divine. It was very nice to see a different perspective, a spiritual way," she said.
Opening up on her journey with 'Sanatan Dharma', Penelope said she was striving for a happy and meaningful life. Stating that she was earlier associated with Buddhism, the bride said she realised that "everything comes from 'Sanatan Dharma'."
"For me it is a way to have a meaningful, happy life, and be able to go beyond this circle of birth and rebirth. As a person, this is what triggered me, as I was looking for a solution for the sadness of what happened in life. It was like a puzzle, that was making some sense when you put it all together. I was into Buddhism for many years and after that, I realised that everything comes from Sanatan Dharma, so I go to the source instead of somebody else speaking," the bride added.
When asked if she would be part of the holy dip in the Sangam on January 29, she said, "Of course, I wouldn't miss that, I already have had the opportunity, we have been here since the beginning and we are planning to stay for until everything is done, so I am looking for that opportunity and I am very glad that I am here, and my mother too."
Mahamandaleshwar of Juna Akhara, Swami Yatindranand Giri, who performed the 'Kanyadaan' of the bride, mentioned that the couple has been followers of 'Sanatan Dharma' for a few years now, and Siddharth has been teaching yoga in various places and spreading the message.
"Today in the shivir of Maha Kumbh a new incident took place, and we did the ceremony according to Indian tradition. There is a student of mine from Greece, for the past few years she has been adopting our traditions of Sanatan and is a devotee of Shiva. Siddharth is also our devotee, he has gone to various countries to spread yoga and serve Sanatan, so today, keeping in mind the traditions, doing the 'agni phere,' (circling the fire) it was done," the Swami told ANI.
The Maha Kumbh is held after every 12 years and a huge turnout of devotees is expected in Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26.
According to tradition, pilgrims flock to the Sangam--the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati (now extinct) rivers--to take the holy dip believed to absolve sins and grant moksha (liberation).
Rooted in Sanatan Dharma, the event signifies a celestial alignment that creates an auspicious period for spiritual cleansing and devotion. The Mahakumbh Mela is expected to host over 45 Crore visitors, marking a historic occasion for India.
Despite cold conditions, a large congregation of devotees gathered at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj to take a dip in the ongoing Mahakumbh. Apart from this, authorities are focusing on preparations for the upcoming Mauni Amavasya on January 29, anticipating large crowds of devotees.

Maoosam was crowned Mrs India – Oman Winner 2025 as well as bagged the title of 'Mrs Inspiration 2025'. In an exclusive chat, Maoosam pours out her heart. Excerpts: What motivated you to join this contest and did you have to overcome some hurdles? I wanted to challenge the narrative that age defines a woman's potential to participate in beauty pageants. My motivation was to show that women at any stage of life can lead, inspire, and thrive. The biggest hurdles were self-doubt, grooming myself and expectations from the near and dear ones to win the crown. What preparation did you undertake? My preparation was holistic — combining fitness, grooming, stage presence, mental composure, skincare, and wellness. I was trained by Vinodhini, a brilliant image consultant, personal stylist, and soft skills trainer who stood by me throughout my entire. I am also deeply grateful to Devyani Sampat, who morally supported me and her creative outfits designed exclusively for me added tremendous value not just to my wardrobe, but also to my confidence. Also, Emirates Medical Center, especially Dr Hamsa Said, who is a specialist dermatologist and cosmetologist, for the skincare support that helped me glow. My wellness treatments at Shri Shri Ayurvedic Centre also kept me revitalized, besides assistance from Askar Hyderali, from Akai Fitness, who was my fitness coach. Last but not the least, the Haut Monde grooming team led by industry legends like Lubna Adam, Dr Blossom Kochhar, Kavita Kharayat, Sunny Kamble, Neha Chhabra, Anjali Shani, and Bharat Bhramar, and Shubhra Bhramar as every session with them brought about a transformation in me that elevated my confidence. How supportive was your family? Incredibly supportive — I truly couldn't have done this without them. The spark behind it all was my son. His belief in me gave me the courage to take this leap. My husband and the rest of my family stood by me with unwavering support, and my friends were my biggest cheerleaders. Their pride and trust in my journey means the world to me. Did you showcase any skills or talents at the event? Yes, I performed a powerful solo act on 'Draupadi's Cheerharan'(the disrobing and humiliation of Draupadi in the Mahabharat epic) which received a standing ovation from the jury. It was emotionally intense and highlighted women's resilience – something that deeply resonated with the audience. How will this title (Mrs India Oman) help you in future? This title has given me a credible platform to expand my advocacy. I plan to launch a mentorship programme for women over 40, and expand my boutique's vision to include more inclusive, empowering fashion. What was your biggest asset and biggest fear? My biggest asset was my self-belief. My biggest fear – it wasn't fear but I was nervous as it was for the first time ever participating in an international pageant where the competition was with the best of the talents from across the globe. However, I overcame this nervousness as soon as I landed and met all the contestants. Who did the jury comprise and did they make any specific comments about you? The jury included distinguished professionals from the fashion, wellness, and entertainment industries. Their feedback was both humbling and motivating. During the talent round, they were visibly moved by my performance of 'Draupadi's Cheerharan'. One juror said, 'Your acting gave us goosebumps — you must consider pursuing it as your career'. Will this title give a boost for your own business hereon? Yes, not only in terms of visibility but also it will add a deeper story to my brand. My boutique is not just about fashion, it's about identity, power, and timeless grace. That message resonates stronger now. What is your advice to other ladies in your age group who are hesitant to take a step forward? Be bold and take the leap of faith. Pursue what you are passionate about…even a small step forward will boost your confidence. What was the immediate reaction of your family members? I heard my son cheering from the audience — his voice gave me so much confidence. When I walked back with both titles, the pride in their eyes said it all. That moment filled me with a deep sense of happiness. I knew, I had achieved something truly meaningful – the Mrs India Oman title!

Muscat to stage tribute to art legend Raja Ravi Varma

Muscat – Muscat is set to host a unique stage production celebrating the life and work of iconic Indian painter Raja Ravi Varma, known for his Renaissance-style depictions of Indian mythology. Titled Katha Parayum Chithrangal (A Unique Story of Colours and Canvases), the show promises a cinematic experience combining light, sound, dance and drama. Scheduled to be held at Al Falaj Hotel Grand Hall, the Malayalam version will be staged on August 22, followed by a Hindi rendition, Bolti Tasveerein – Rangon aur Canvas ke Zariye Khulti Kahani, on August 23. Directed by Sunil Kumar Krishnan Nair, the 165-minute performance involves over 117 actors and technicians with rehearsals having commenced nearly six months ago. 'This is not just a performance; it is an emotion, a tribute to a man whose brush transformed still life into motion and emotion,' said Nair. 'We aim to introduce Raja Ravi Varma's genius to the younger generation and revive his artistic spirit in a contemporary way. To my knowledge, Oman has never seen a live drama show of this scale. We're telling stories through colour, canvas and soul – just as Ravi Varma did.' The production includes sets by stage designer Sujathan Master and music by composer Rony Raphael. A painting competition is also being organised as part of the show to encourage cultural dialogue and artistic expression open to artists of all nationalities in Oman. Artists from India will oversee makeup, costume and lighting, underlining the show's scale and ambition in presenting a multidimensional tribute to one of India's most celebrated painters.

Colour and ease lift Paris Men's Fashion Week

Colours ran wild and silhouettes softened at Paris Men's Fashion Week, which ends Sunday, as designers brought a rare breath of fresh air to a gloomy fashion climate. Despite the heavy news cycle and economic turbulence affecting the luxury sector, this Fashion Week was a "shot of creativity that felt incredibly good", Alice Feillard, men's buying director at Galeries Lafayette, told AFP. The spring-summer 2026 season "is much more creative than the previous ones, which were a bit duller", said Adrien Communier, the fashion editor at GQ France. Both experts observed a more relaxed vibe, with Feillard pointing to "good humour" and "optimism", while Communier noted a "lighter mood". "With so many debuts, there was a sense of renewal. And so, I found that people were more curious," he added. After a notable women's show in March, Julian Klausner made waves Thursday with his first menswear show for Dries Van Noten, while Jonathan Anderson's long-awaited debut at Dior drew applause on Friday. A renewed burst of creativity lit up the runways, most visibly through bold colour choices. Brown tones and pastels made way for a richer, more saturated palette for next summer. Saint Laurent opened the week with violet, navy, orange and moss green, while Pharrell Williams at Louis Vuitton channelled Indian motifs and hues. Dries Van Noten made a splash with bold fuchsia and blood red, while Kenzo exploded with candy pink, aquatic blue and chick yellow. - 'nonchalant elegance' - Dior Homme took a more restrained approach, showcasing rich tones like a deep forest green on structured pieces. The tones sometimes appeared as prints -- tiger at Kenzo, childlike safari at Louis Vuitton and floral at Dior. At Comme des Garcons Plus, prints leaned into pop-style 1970s geometry -- a look also seen at Amiri, Saint Laurent and Junya Watanabe, who embraced flared trousers. Stripes were ubiquitous but subtle, adding detail without overwhelming. Designers leaned into fluidity with flared trousers, long jackets, open shirts and an ongoing pyjama trend. "There's a sort of nonchalant elegance in having a very fluid yet thoughtfully designed silhouette," Communier said. Last season's neo-dandy look is now much more relaxed. "Tailoring is still omnipresent in the collections, but it's becoming more fluid. There's still formality, but it's far more relaxed and remains very elegant," said Feillard. Bags were omnipresent, from clutch to shoulder, styled for both casual outings and evening occasions. Finally, flip-flops made a major comeback, seen at Officine Generale, Auralee and even Hermes, "worn in an almost formal way", said Communier. A perfect example of relaxed chic. —AFP
