Garden slugs and snails could now be considered venomous, study finds
In a study that shakes up the definition of venom, researchers explain it is not just the bites of snakes and spiders that are classed as venomous, but also the saliva of aphids and the chemicals released by slugs.
This change in definition will mean that tens of thousands of additional species could now be considered venomous.
According to the research, published in the journal Trends in Ecology & Evolution, substances like saliva all function with the same evolutionary function in mind: to manipulate another organism's body against its interests.
The paper, led by the Natural History Museum's venom expert Dr Ronald Jenner, argues that venom should be redefined as any internally delivered secretion that one organism uses to make a physiological change in another living organism.
This means that insects such as cicadas, aphids and shield bugs - which suck the sap of plants and inject toxic secretions to disable plant defences - and garden snails and slugs, which use toxins to manipulate their sexual mates, join the ranks of snakes and scorpions that use venom on prey.
Dr Jenner said: 'This redefinition helps us understand venom not as a narrow weapon, but as a widespread evolutionary strategy.
'If you look at what the proboscis of a mosquito does when it's in your skin, it injects toxins that suppress the immune system so that the animal can safely take a blood meal without being swatted away. On a molecular level it shows a lot of similarities to what happens when a viper bites, say, a bunny.
'Conceptually they work on exactly the same system: a conflict arena between two organisms that is mediated by injected toxins. And that's venom.'
Researchers also found the venom in wasps, bees and ants, as well as bugs and aphids, were originally used on plants rather than animals.
Slugs and snails also inject potential partners with toxins during sexual courtship. Examples range from snails that shoot love-darts coated with bioactive molecules to manipulate their partners against their interest, to male blowflies whose barbed phallus injects a secretion that prevents females from mating again.
These sexual secretions, the researchers argue, also fit their definition of venom because substances are internally delivered to manipulate the recipient in a conflict of evolutionary interests.
The authors hope this redefinition could mean that scientists from traditionally separate fields can combine forces to accelerate understanding of venom biology.

One of the world's rarest sharks captured on camera in UK 'dream sighting'
One of the world's rarest shark species has been captured on an underwater camera as it swam through a Welsh bay. The angel shark was caught by The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales' (WTSWW) underwater cameras in Cardigan Bay. Angel sharks are critically endangered, having suffered "significant decline" as a result of fishing and habitat degradation. The footage came as part of National Marine Week, which runs from July 26 to August 10. The angel shark was captured on WTSWW's Baited Underwater Remote Video Systems (BRUVS) which had been deployed by a research team investigating dolphin diets and marine diversity in Cardigan Bay. Dr Sarah Perry, marine conservation and research manager at WTSWW, said: 'We were thrilled to record an angel shark in Cardigan Bay, a rare and exciting encounter. 'Before this project started, angel sharks hadn't been captured on film in Cardigan Bay since 2021. 'This sighting comes at a crucial time, as the Senedd and UK Government discuss a ban on bottom trawling in Marine Protected Areas. 'Our Dolphin Diet Detectives project, funded by the Welsh Government through the Nature Networks Fund, uses underwater cameras to reveal the incredible diversity of life on the seabed. The Largest National Parks in the UK 'These findings highlight the urgent need to protect these fragile habitats from damaging activities like bottom trawling.' The cameras were deployed in a range of habitats and left to record for just one hour at each location. They have captured a huge range of wildlife both inside and outside of marine protected areas, including spider crabs, wrasse, and most recently, the angel shark. The WTSWW say that even marine protected areas, of which there are 139 in Wales, are not yet fully protected from destructive fishing activities. How have people reacted online? Angel sharks are flat-bodied sharks which can grow up to 2.4m in length and are normally found submerged in sandy habitats in coastal waters. They are well camouflaged to ambush flatfishes, crustaceans and molluscs. Living on the seabed makes the sharks vulnerable to being caught in trawl nets, which along with their slow reproduction rate, puts them at a high risk of extinction.

David Nabarro, British physician who led UN response to Ebola and COVID-19, dies
GENEVA (AP) — Dr. David Nabarro, a British physician who led the U.N. response to some of the biggest health crises in recent years, including bird flu, Ebola and the coronavirus pandemic, has died. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, confirmed Nabarro's death on social media platform X. 'David was a great champion of global health and health equity, and a wise, generous mentor to countless individuals,' Tedros wrote Saturday. 'His work touched and impacted so many lives across the world.' King Charles knighted Nabarro in 2023 for his contributions to global health after he served as one of six special envoys to the WHO on COVID-19. He won the 2018 World Food Prize for his work on health and hunger issues. He also was a candidate for the top job at the WHO in 2017 but lost out to Tedros in the final round of voting. Nabarro left the U.N. later that year. The 4SD Foundation, a social enterprise in Switzerland focused on mentoring the next generation of leaders in global sustainable development, said its strategic director died at his home Friday in a 'sudden passing.' Other details were not immediately available. 'David's generosity and unwavering commitment to improve the lives of others will be sorely missed,' the foundation wrote on its website Saturday. Survivors include his wife, Flo, as well as his five children and seven grandchildren.

What's happening? Smallmouth bass may be a native North American species, but the species was only introduced to the Adirondacks in the 1900s. After their introduction, the smallmouth bass did what invasive species do and quickly took over many of the region's lakes, which resulted in significant declines in native fish populations. However, despite 25 years of efforts to eradicate the smallmouth bass from these lakes, the populations continued to thrive. Now, researchers have published a study with the surprising reason why eradication efforts have failed. According to the study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal, efforts to physically remove this species from these lakes to decrease the population size were unsuccessful because, over time, the smallmouth bass evolved to mature earlier and grow more quickly, resulting in smaller fish but a larger overall population. One of the senior researchers on the study, Peter McIntyre, explained: "Twenty-five years ago, Cornell's Adirondack Fishery Research Program set out to test whether we could functionally eradicate smallmouth bass from a lake. It took us 25 years to prove why the answer is no: the fish evolved to outmaneuver us." Why are evolving invasive species concerning? Invasive species, like smallmouth bass, already cause a plethora of problems when introduced to new ecosystems, so if they can evolve to avoid eradication, these issues worsen. Because invasive species spread so rapidly, they can destroy native species and ecosystems by outcompeting them for food and other vital resources. Invasive species can also introduce new diseases into ecosystems, which can decimate native species populations. Depending on the type of invasive species, other problems caused by their introduction could include impacted human food supplies, more extreme weather patterns, and altered soil chemistry. However, by prioritizing and protecting native species, as researchers tried to do in the Adirondacks by removing smallmouth bass, food supplies are protected, the spread of disease is limited, and natural resources are better conserved. The discovery of the smallmouth bass's evolution to outwit eradication highlights the need to prevent invasive species from entering ecosystems in the first place.
