The pair, known as the 'Peru Two', were jailed for six years and eight months after admitting the crime but were freed in 2016 after striking a deal with Peruvian authorities.
McCollum told ITV's This Morning: 'Reality type TV series, I've never really been interested in doing anything like that, but I think SAS, there's no other show like that.
'So I thought it would be a really good way to test myself and try and push myself and do something completely different.
'So it was the one show I was like, you know what? I feel like I've been pushed to my limit through other experiences. Why not try this? Never in my life am I gonna face these type of challenges.'

The Channel 4 reality spin-off series follows 14 famous faces as they endure special forces training in an attempt to make it through SAS selection.
McCollum said: 'I did that show for me. I wanted to improve myself and push myself. It wasn't, 'I'm doing this because I want people to like me.''

Asked if she was worried about being subject to scrutiny, she said: 'Not really, because I know that's always going to exist.
'And any kind of decisions and things I make, there's always that kind of scrutiny. So I thought, whether I do the show, there'll always be some kind of talk about that.'

Speaking about what it was like to stay in prison, she said: 'It's obviously extreme, but I feel like I was incredibly adaptable, like I just kind of got along with it.
'And I think for the first part, I felt so guilty and bad. I kind of just thought: 'OK, I deserve it. I'll just suck it up. I'll just get along with it.'
'But I feel like it made me an amazing person. I came back when I was 23.'
Among the other famous faces taking part in the programme are professional boxer Conor Benn, S Club star Hannah Spearritt and the first celebrity deaf recruit, Love Island star Tasha Ghouri.

Love Island's Andrada leaves nothing to the imagination in see through dress as she eyes up All Stars appearance
LOVE Island bombshell Andrada has sent temperatures soaring after stepping out in a barely-there see-through dress. The stunning reality star left little to the imagination as she flaunted her figure, teasing fans with her eye-catching look and making it clear she's ready for another shot at love in the villa. 5 Sunday's penultimate episode saw former villa residents return to decide which of two couples should be sent home, a day before the final. The gang had to choose between Meg and Dejon and Angel and Ty, with the OGs receiving the most votes and harshest criticism. Meg and Dejon were ultimately sent home - but fans were praising Andrada for being "iconic" after she served Dejon some home truths before they were brutally dumped. She called Dejon out for his game-playing behaviour and acting loved-up for the cameras. She told Meg that she might be genuine, but Dejon isn't, explaining the moment he clocked the camera and asked Meg to move closer to him. Meg appeared unflustered by the shocking revelation, while Dejon looked down and insisted that Meg knows how he feels about her and is genuine. Andrada was flooded with love and support from viewers after she called out Dejon's shady actions. Taking to her Instagram stories, Andrada replied to comments from fans of the show thanking her "for speaking up for the people" and "speaking facts." She also confirmed she is eager to return to the villa for another chance at love if she were asked to go on Love Island: All Stars. A fan asked her: "Would you ever come back for Love Island: All Stars? You deserve way more airtime." Love Islander reveals her hair transformation She replied: "If I was single maybe I would." Andrada brought some extra drama as she also confronted her ex, Ben, at the fire pit. The taxi driver, 23, and the nail technician, 27, vowed to give their romance a go on the outside after they were dumped from the villa following a public vote. And just days after, the pair seemed to have already called it a day. Maya Jama asked what had happened and Andrada revealed: "So we came outside the villa he went exclusive with me, and he was about to meet my family next week. "It took one event where I wasn't there and his head turned." Ben replied: "I wouldn't say it turned." But Andrada was having none of it, spinning her finger in the air and saying: "360 baby. Turned. Just be a man, like if you're going to do it, do it with chest and stand on it." Love Island fans were quick to comment on the chaos Andrada brought to proceedings. Taking to X, one wrote: "Andrada walked into that villa, humbled Ben, declared her love for Yas & Jamie, and dragged Dejon over camera-gate all in one night. A queen." Another added: "Andrada exposing Ben as a cheater was iconic." A third penned: "ANDRADA BOUGHT UP THE CAMERA COMMENT OH MY GOD WHY DID WE EVER GET RID OF THIS QUEEN!!!! CLOCK HIM ANDRADAAAA". A fourth commented: "That speech just solidified Andrada as one of the Love Island greats idc #loveisland." Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2. 5 5

Kirstie Allsopp's family home at centre of row over huge new building development
The new estate in Wiltshire, developed by CG Fry & Son, will be built on land bordering the Grade-II* listed building Vern Leaze, located in Calne, which was once owned by Charles Allsopp Kirstie Allsopp, the well-known presenter of Channel 4's Location, Location, Location, finds her family's former abode at the heart of a contentious planning dispute that could see a vast new housing estate erected in Wiltshire. The proposed development by CG Fry & Son is set to encroach upon the boundaries of the Grade-II* listed Vern Leaze in Calne, a historic property previously owned by Kirstie's father, the 6th Baron Hindlip. Charles Allsopp, Kirstie's father and an auctioneer renowned for hammering down Van Gogh's Sunflowers for a staggering £24.75million in 1987, once presided over the grand manor, which boasts 11 bedrooms and was valued at a whopping £3.5million in 2021. Despite selling the estate in the early 1980s, the planned housing estate threatens to overshadow the magnificent property, complete with its stables, coach house, walled garden, and lodge. It comes after Channel 4 breaks silence after Gogglebox couple suddenly dumped from show. The project envisions 180 new homes and a medical centre, sparking a wave of objections from hundreds of local residents earlier this year. CG Fry & Son have defended their plans, stating: "This proposal will contribute towards Wiltshire Council's annual housing requirement, and will provide high quality open market and affordable homes.", reports the Express. A design and access statement assured: "Grade II* listed buildings are considered to be of national significance and we have taken care to design the proposed development in such a way that it protects the building and its setting. "A key part of this is the retention of a large area in the southern part of the development as a parkland style open space. "This was formerly an area of parkland around the historic house; however, it has lost many of the historic trees that were once part of it." Kirsty and Location, Location, Location co-host Phil Spencer recently discussed the popularity of their show. In a recent documentary, Kirstie reminisced over her years on the show and said their long-running role on the series, and on Channel 4, had been an 'absolute privilege'. They agreed that while they had helped to change people's lives by sorting them out with the right place to live, the many couples and families they have met along the way have also had a huge impact on them. 'They've changed our lives too,' she said. They also said that, over the years, they've 'been through a lot together'.
