Passenger train derails in Germany killing at least 3 people

A regional passenger train derailed in southern Germany, killing at least three people and seriously injuring others on Sunday, authorities said. Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near Riedlingen, roughly 158 kilometers (98 miles) west of Munich, remains under investigation. Photos from the scene showed parts of the train on its side as rescuers climbed atop the carriages. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured. Roughly 100 people were onboard the train when at least two carriages derailed in a forested area around 6:10 p.m. (1610 GMT). German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in a post on social platform X, said he mourned the victims and gave his condolences to their families. Deutsche Bahn, Germany's main national railway operator, did not return The Associated Press' request for comment Sunday evening. This is a developing story and will be updated.

Man Faces Terrorism Charge in Mass Stabbing at a Michigan Walmart

A man armed with a folding knife who went on a random stabbing spree that left 11 people injured at a Michigan Walmart faces a charge of terrorism in connection with the attack, the authorities said on Sunday. The man, Bradford James Gille, 42, of Afton, Mich., also faces 11 counts of assault with intent to murder, Sheriff Mike Shea of Grand Traverse County said at a news conference on Sunday. Though officials said a motive for the attack remained undetermined, they are seeking to charge Mr. Gille with terrorism. Such a charge is customary in a mass attack like the one on Saturday because its intent was believed to be to bring fear and destruction to a community as a whole, rather than to harm specific individuals, Noelle R. Moeggenberg, the prosecuting attorney for Grand Traverse County, said. If convicted, the maximum penalty Mr. Gille would face for that charge would be life in prison, she said. Mr. Gille used a 'standard folding-style knife' with a 3.5-inch blade, Sheriff Shea said. He acted alone, the sheriff added. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
