Kiulu youth recognised for community impact
KIULU (July 14): Kiulu youth were recognised for their contributions to community development through the presentation of awards for outstanding youth in tourism and agro-based entrepreneurship.
The awards, introduced for the first time, aim to acknowledge and encourage young individuals who have demonstrated leadership and initiative in their respective fields.
The recipients were Juanson Moidin (Youth Tourism Entrepreneur) from Kampung Pahu; Charlie Gumbolog (Youth Agro-Agriculture Entrepreneur) from Kampung Taginambur; and Dell Darion Victor (Youth Agro-Fisheries Entrepreneur) from Kampung Rugading.
Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment cum Kiulu assemblyman, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, presented the awards during the Santai Pitimungan Belia Kiulu programme, yesterday.
More than 500 people attended the event, which was jointly organised by Kelab Belia Prihatin Kiulu and the Kiulu Tourism Association, with support from the Kiulu ADUN's Office.
The programme took place at the Pulou Kelapa Eco-Tourism Open Hall in Kampung Malanggang Lama.
Kelab Belia Prihatin Kiulu chairperson, Elsheera Alfred Yapat, said the programme served as a meaningful platform to encourage active youth participation in building their character and contributing to their community.
'Our goal is clear, to bring Kiulu youth together in an empowering environment where they can share talents, experiences, and build networks for a brighter future.
'As Datuk Joniston has often emphasised, Kiulu has great potential in tourism, agriculture and industry. I believe our youth have everything it takes to unlock this potential, with creativity, spirit, and wisdom as their greatest assets,' she said.
Meanwhile, Joniston said recognising youth achievements is crucial to motivating more young people to take an active role in areas that directly impact the community, such as tourism, agriculture and social initiatives.
'The young people of Kiulu should not rely solely on existing opportunities, but must be bold in creating their own space, be independent and competitive.
'Technology and social media should be used wisely to highlight village uniqueness, generate income, and support initiatives such as agropreneurship, home cafes and community-based tourism services,' he added.
He also proposed having an Idea Pitch Mini programme as a platform for young people to present business or community project ideas, with the opportunity to receive seed funding. This, he said, should be part of efforts to further empower youth in Kiulu.
During the event, two former students of SMK Tun Fuad Stephens — Joshua Subing from Kampung Pahu Lama and Adellysandro Edward from Kampung Longkou Baru — were also recognised for their achievements in sports.
Joniston also presented incentives to 17 outstanding STPM students from SMK Tun Fuad Stephens in recognition of their academic accomplishments.
The programme featured a traditional costume design competition, musical performances, a local produce market, as well as information-sharing on financing opportunities available for young entrepreneurs through relevant agencies.

Sabah-MM2H programme sees rising interest after criteria relaxed

KOTA KINABALU (July 18): The State Cabinet has approved several key amendments to the participation criteria of the Sabah-Malaysia My Second Home (Sabah-MM2H) Programme. The minimum age requirement has been lowered from 30 to 25. Additionally, successful applicants may now place their mandatory fixed deposit in any of the 12 authorised commercial banks. They are also permitted to withdraw 50% of the deposit after 12 months for education or medical treatment purposes. Chairman of the Sabah-Malaysia My Second Home (Sabah-MM2H) Programme, Datuk Seri Christina Liew, announced this at a meeting with the registered agents who welcomed the amendments, describing them as favourable and likely to attract more applicants. Liew who is also the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, commended the registered agents for their contributions to the growing success of the initiative. 'We (State Sabah-MM2H Committee) have received an increasing number of applications from China, Taiwan, and other countries,' she said. 'We encourage you to continue promoting the programme to potential clients overseas through roadshows or other platforms. We look forward to more foreign applicants purchasing property here and considering Sabah as their second home,' she said. Liew also addressed concerns raised by agents, particularly regarding the classification of buildings eligible for purchase. 'We will discuss and evaluate these issues in our next monthly meeting and keep you updated,' she assured them, adding that the Sabah-MM2H Committee has been efficient in processing and approving applications from overseas. Also present at the meeting were the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Datuk Josie Lai, and members of the State Sabah-MM2H Committee.

North Korea bars foreign tourists from new seaside resort

(EPA Images pic) SEOUL : North Korea has barred foreigners from a newly opened beach resort, the country's tourism administration said this week, just days after Russia's top diplomat visited the area. The sprawling seaside resort on its east coast, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's pet project, opened to domestic visitors earlier this month with great fanfare in state-run media. Dubbed 'North Korea's Waikiki' by South Korean media, the Wonsan-Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone appears to be lined with high-rise hotels and waterparks, and can purportedly accommodate some 20,000 people. State media previously said visits to Wonsan by Russian tour groups were expected in the coming months. But following Lavrov's visit, the North's national tourism administration said 'foreign tourists are temporarily not being accepted' without giving further details, in a statement posted on an official website this week. Kim showed a keen interest in developing North Korea's tourism industry during his early years in power, analysts have said, and the coastal resort area was a particular focus. He said ahead of the opening of the beach resort that the construction of the site would go down as 'one of the greatest successes this year' and that the North would build more large-scale tourist zones 'in the shortest time possible'. The North last year permitted Russian tourists to return for the first time since the pandemic and western tour operators briefly returned in February this year. Seoul's unification ministry, however, said that it expected international tourism to the new resort was 'likely to remain small in scale' given the limited capacity of available flights. Kim held talks with Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov in Wonsan last week where he offered Moscow his full and 'unconditional' support for its war in Ukraine, KCNA reported. Lavrov reportedly hailed the seaside project as a 'good tourist attraction', adding it would become popular among both local and Russian visitors looking for new destinations. Ahead of Lavrov's recent visit, Russia announced that it would begin twice-a-week flights between Moscow and Pyongyang.

Las Vegas Sands makes US$8b Singapore bet with resort expansion
SINGAPORE, July 16 — Casino operator Las Vegas Sands broke ground yesterday on a new US$8 billion (RM34 billion) project to expand its iconic Marina Bay Sands resort in Singapore, in a major bet on the city-state's tourism market. The new complex is expected to open in 2031, pending government approval, and will include a 55-storey hotel tower with 570 luxury suites, a 15,000-seat arena, a casino, and space for exhibitions and conferences, the company said. Called IR2 for now, the new Sands project will be located adjacent to its existing resort, which opened 15 years ago in Singapore's Marina Bay financial district. 'When completed, the expansion will refresh our skyline,' said Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who led the groundbreaking ceremony. Marina Bay Sands consists of three 57-storey hotel towers supporting an elongated boat-like structure perched on top — a favourite backdrop for tourists which also houses one of Singapore's two casinos. Las Vegas Sands co-founder Miriam Adelson, the wife of late billionaire Sheldon, thanked Singapore and the country's leaders for trusting the company. 'You took a chance on us... we took a chance on you,' she said. Singapore has banked on man-made attractions to help lure tourists, including Southeast Asia's only Universal Studios theme park, a garden with massive artificial trees, a cavernous glass-encased flower dome, a world-class zoo and wildlife parks. It also hosts a Formula One night race on the city's streets, and last year the country was Taylor Swift's only South-east Asian stop for her Eras tour. More than 16 million international visitors came to Singapore last year, up 21 percent from 2023. Patrick Dumont, president and chief operating officer of Las Vegas Sands, said that when the new project is completed, the US firm would have invested 'more than US$15 billion' in Singapore since it started operations there in 2010.
