Open-air fire ban in effect for Ottawa
Ottawa Fire Services has issued an open-air fire ban for the city of Ottawa. All open-air fires are prohibited during a ban, even if you have an open-air fire permit. This ban applies to agricultural burns, brush pile burns, campfires, and wood-burning outdoor fireplaces. 'There will be zero tolerance enforcement during the fire ban,' Ottawa Fire Services say. An extended heat warning remains in effect in the city, with high temperatures in the 30 C area and humidex values in the low 40s. Smoke from wildfires in northern Ontario and the Prairies has also blown over the city in recent days, leading to poor air quality. Ottawa has seen 21.7 millimetres of rain so far this month, with fewer than 7 mm in the last week. A chance of showers is in the forecast Thursday.

Air quality statement for Ottawa lifted but heat warning remains in effect
The air quality in Ottawa is starting to improve after a smoky, hazy start to the day. A special air quality statement that came into effect Monday was lifted at around 10 a.m. Tuesday, as air quality showed signs of improving. A heat warning remains in effect for Ottawa, with hot, humid weather and a high humidex in the forecast. The forecast for Tuesday is sunny with local smoke. The high is 32 C with a humidex of 40. The UV index is 9, or very high. The air quality health index (AQHI) at 10 a.m. was 5, or a moderate risk, after briefly dropping to 4 an hour earlier. It is forecast to fall to 3, or low risk, on Wednesday. 'You may experience mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough. More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough. If you think you are having a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance,' Environment Canada says of the smoke. The heat, however, also presents risks. 'Watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others. Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue. Stop your activity and drink water,' the heat warning says. Meteorologist Crawford Luke says if you have to choose between staying indoors to avoid the haze or going outside to find a way to cool off, choose to cool off. 'The public health messaging is to treat the heat warning as the more serious one,' he told CTV News Ottawa on Monday. 'If that means you need to jump in a lake or a pool or something to keep cool, that's the recommendation from them. It's the more immediate health threat.' The sky will remain clear, but hazy, Tuesday night. The overnight low is 20 C. Wednesday's forecast is mainly sunny with a high of 33 C and a humidex of 41. The heat warning for Ottawa is expected to end Thursday night. Thursday's forecast is cloudy with a 30 per cent chance of showers and a high of 30 C, while Friday's high is 26 C, which is closer to the seasonal norm. Edmonton weather: Sunshine today, clouds and breezy Wednesday
An area of high pressure over central Alberta today will keep skies clear and the wind calm. But, that'll change by Wednesday. Clouds will push into northwestern Alberta later today and some of that cloud cover will push into the Edmonton region tonight. I don't think we'll be completely overcast through Wednesday - we'll get occasional sunny breaks. But, more cloud than sun AND some gusts in the 30-40 km/h range in the afternoon. We'll also keep an eye on the potential for wildfire smoke in the afternoon. There's some thicker smoke in southeastern Alberta today and the modelling suggests that we may see some of that push north into central Alberta on Wednesday. There's a big question about how thick that smoke might be IF IT DOES push up towards Edmonton. I'm thinking that we might smell some smoke, but air quality probably doesn't get worse than a 'moderate risk.' We're off to a chilly start across the province. Edmonton area hit morning lows in the 3 to 6 C range across the region (coolest morning in about three weeks). The average low for Edmonton at this time of year is 13 C. Parts of east-central Alberta were in the 1 to 3 C range this morning. The average high for Edmonton in mid-July is 24 C. won't be overly cool this week. not much chance for heat in the next five to 10 days. Temperatures will continue to top out in the low 20s today through Thursday. Friday-Sunday look SLIGHTLY warmer, probably in the 24/25 C range for daytime highs. Looking LONG Range - back to the low 20s for early next week. Here's the forecast for Edmonton and area: Today - Mainly sunny. High: 22 Tonight - Increasing cloud overnight. 9pm: 17 Wednesday - Cloudy with sunny breaks. Wind becoming SE 20 gusting to 40 km/h. Risk of wildfire haze in the afternoon. Morning Low: 11 Afternoon High: 22 Thursday - Mix of sun & cloud. 30% chance of a late-day shower. Morning Low: 12 Afternoon High: 23 Friday - Partly cloudy. Morning Low: 12 Afternoon High: 24 Saturday - Mix of sun & cloud. 30% chance of late-day showers. Morning Low: 14 Afternoon High: 24 Sunday - Mix of sun & cloud. Morning Low: 13 Afternoon High: 24
