Suneel Darshan
, who is known for directing hit collaborations with
Akshay Kumar
in the early 2000s, has addressed the actor's sudden exit from his 2005 film Barsaat. While promoting Andaaz 2, Darshan recalled the behind-the-scenes turbulence and explained why he chose to retain
Priyanka Chopra
as the lead, even as
Akshay
backed out.
'There was a lot of turbulence in his personal life'
Responding to whether Akshay was initially cast in Barsaat before being replaced by
Bobby Deol
, Suneel Darshan confirmed, 'Ab toh gaana YouTube pe hai. Maine Akshay aur
Priyanka
ka shoot... woh film shoot hui thi, I know. Haan, woh shoot hui thi film. Aur ek point aisa aaya ki uski personal life mein kaafi turbulence aa gayi thi.'
Darshan said Akshay himself approached him with the request to exit the film.
He told Bollywood Bubble, 'Usne mujhe poocha ki, 'Bhai, agar yeh mere bina ho sake, personal issues ki wajah se...' Toh main toh yeh maanta hoon ki actors ko bohot responsible hona chahiye, aur shaadishuda aadmiyon ko toh aur bhi zyada responsible hona chahiye.'
Reflecting on how these personal choices affect a film's fate, he added, 'Lekin kya hota hai, galti karna insaan ki fitrat hoti hai — aur producer ko maar khana uski taqdeer mein hota hai.'

'I didn't want Priyanka to bear the burden'
Despite the rumoured fallout between Akshay and Priyanka Chopra, Darshan chose not to replace the actress in the film.
'Yeh mera faisla tha, kyunki main chahta tha ki Priyanka Chopra ko us haadse ki responsibility ka onus na doon,' he said.
'Aur main sochta tha, bhai, jiska mere se gehra sambandh tha — jitna bhi tha — woh toh Akshay hi kehta tha ki 'main tujhe apna kya samajhta hoon'...
Woh toh us waqt shayad kisi tape mein mil bhi jaaye.'
'Maine socha ki yeh hi better hai ki Priyanka ko continue karein, aur jisne mujhe option diya hai, usse replace karein.'

A professional split sparked by personal rumours?
Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra had once been one of Bollywood's most bankable onscreen pairs, delivering hits like Andaaz, Aitraaz, and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. However, rumours of a romantic relationship between the two began circulating around the time of Barsaat, reportedly causing strain in Akshay's marriage with
Twinkle Khanna
.
As per reports, Twinkle even considered divorce, prompting the actor to distance himself from Priyanka professionally. Their on-screen collaborations abruptly ceased following the incident.
Over the years, Priyanka Chopra has largely remained silent on the matter. However, she has subtly acknowledged making the choice to step away to avoid causing tension in anyone's personal life.
Most recently, in July 2025, while promoting her Hollywood film Heads of State, the actress briefly addressed her past professional dynamics, praising both Akshay Kumar and Tom Cruise for their action abilities, marking a rare mention of her former co-star.

'This was magical since it had never happened with anyone before – a female-centric film doing so well. I feel really lovely and blessed,' Adah shared. 'it's easier to speak the truth' Adah credited her parents for her grounded nature, saying they had always taught her to be honest. 'There's no other way. It's very difficult. Karisma Kapoor's daughter Samaira steps out in stylish black outfit amid family feud over Sunjay Kapur's Rs 30,000 crore fortune

Samaira Kapur, the daughter of Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor and late businessman Sunjay Kapur, was recently spotted stepping out in Mumbai for an evening outing with her friends. The young star kid grabbed attention with her chic fashion choice, a sleek black outfit that looked both trendy and elegant. According to a video shared by InstantBollywood, Samaira was seen quickly getting into her car along with her friend. She styled her hair in a sleek back ponytail, letting a few strands fall freely. Her look was completed with a pair of dainty earrings, a stylish watch, and a few delicate bracelets. Samaira visits Delhi with her mum Just last week, Samaira was seen visiting Delhi, along with her mother Karisma Kapoor and brother Kiaan. While this might seem like a usual family trip, the timing has raised a few eyebrows. Karisma's visit comes in the middle of a reported legal feud over the enormous fortune left behind by her ex-husband Sunjay Kapur. Sunjay passed away in June this year, reportedly due to a cardiac arrest caused by accidentally swallowing a bee during a polo match. His last rites were performed in Delhi. Karisma has no stake in fortune With rumours flying around that Karisma might be involved in matters linked to Sunjay's Rs 30,000 crore estate, a source close to the family has now set the record straight. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How to Ease Knee Pain Without Injections or Side Effects Learn More Undo The source told ETimes, Karisma is not part of any property-related talks. 'Karisma Kapoor is not involved in any inheritance or property-related matters,' said a source close to the family. 'She has no claim, nor is she seeking any share in the estate. Her only concern is the well-being and future of her children.' Children are rightful heirs to the estate Karisma and Sunjay were married in 2003 and got divorced in 2016 after a rocky relationship. They have two children together, Samaira and Kiaan. The same source confirmed that the children are the rightful heirs to their father's wealth. 'The children will receive what is due to them,' the source added. 'Karisma's focus remains entirely on them.' Sunjay's mother seeks police probe Meanwhile, the drama surrounding the estate has taken a serious turn. Rani Kapur, Sunjay's mother and former chairperson of Sona Comstar, has formally reached out to the UK authorities. She has asked for a full investigation into what she describes as the 'unexplained circumstances' surrounding her son's death. According to ANI, Rani Kapur filed an official criminal complaint with British police and stressed the urgency of a proper probe. Media reports also suggest that she believes something more serious may have happened. Rani claims to have 'credible and concerning evidence… that suggests his (Sunjay Kapur's) death may not have been accidental or natural, but may have involved foul play, including possibility of murder, abetment, conspiracy, fraud, and forgery.
