Ledecky wins 800-metre freestyle at world swim championship, McIntosh takes bronze
Canada's Summer McIntosh emerged with a bronze medal after a three-way duel from start to finish in the women's 800-metre freestyle Saturday in Singapore.
The Toronto teenager, Olympic champion Katie Ledecky of the United States and Lani Pallister of Australia battled from the blocks to the wall with Ledecky claiming her seventh world title in the distance.
McIntosh, seeking a fourth-straight gold medal in Singapore, ran second to the American star before making her move at the final turn for a brief lead after 700 metres.
But Ledecky surged and delivered the knockout punch over the final 50 with Pallister closing fast behind her.
Ledecky touched the wall in eight minutes, 5.62 seconds with Pallister less than four-tenths of a second behind. McIntosh ran out of gas and touched the wall 1.67 seconds after Ledecky.
McIntosh will come up short in her goal of five gold medals in her five individual events.
However, the 18-year-old is the favourite and world-record holder in the women's 400-metre individual medley on Sunday's last day of competition.
McIntosh became the first Canadian to win three gold medals in a single world championship with victories in the 400 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley.
Montreal's Ilya Kharun took bronze in the men's 100-metre butterfly Saturday to give Canada eight medals at the world aquatics championships — seven in swimming and one in diving.
The 20-year-old Kharun, who was an Olympic bronze medallist last year in Paris, posted a time of 50.07 seconds.
Maxime Grousset of France was the winner in 49.62 ahead of silver medallist Noe Ponti of Switzerland in 49.83.
Toronto's Josh Liendo was fourth in 50.09. Taylor Ruck of Kelowna, B.C., placed sixth in the women's 50-metre freestyle.

An ex-NFL player has been convicted in a dogfighting case. A record number of dogs were taken from him
A former NFL player has been convicted for running an operation that bred and trafficked 'grand champion' dogs and their offspring for dogfighting, the Department of Justice said. LeShon Johnson, 54, a former running back for the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants, was convicted by a federal jury in Oklahoma on six felony counts of violating the federal Animal Welfare Act's prohibitions against 'possessing, selling, transporting, and delivering animals to be used in fighting ventures,' the department said. Following the verdict, the ex-NFLer surrendered 190 dogs from his 'Mal Kant Kennels,' the largest number ever seized from a single person in a federal dogfighting case, officials said. He faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on each count. 'My client respects the verdict,' defense attorney Courtney Jordan told CNN, noting Johnson was convicted of only six of 23 counts. He was acquitted on 17 counts of possessing a dog for use in an animal fighting venture, court records show. 'The jury saw there is more to this story than what the government has made it out to be. He is a family man, a good person who loves his dogs. He was never involved in dogfighting himself, per se,' Jordan said. Johnson's conviction recalls the 2007 federal case against then-NFL quarterback Michael Vick, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy involving illegal dogfighting. Admitting he participated in killing dogs and ran a business that involved illegal gambling, Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison. After his 2009 release, he advocated against dogfighting, returned to the NFL and now coaches a college team. While dogfighting is a felony in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, more than 40,000 people participate in enterprises that breed, condition and train dogs to be 'placed in a pit to fight each other for spectator entertainment and profit,' the Humane Society of the United States and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals say. In Johnson's case, 'the American government is really after the American pit bull terrier, and that's what LeShon Johnson was breading,' his lawyer said. The breed is 'the dog of choice' for fighting in the United States, according to the ASPCA. Johnson had a 2004 state conviction for dogfighting, the Justice Department said. In the federal case against him, Johnson bred and trafficked 'fighting dogs' and their puppies for dogfighting, 'profiting from the cruel and illegal industry,' evidence presented to the jury showed. 'This criminal profited off of the misery of innocent animals and he will face severe consequences for his vile crimes,' Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement. 'This case underscores the Department of Justice's commitment to protecting animals from abuse – 190 dogs are now safe thanks to outstanding collaborative work by our attorneys and law enforcement components.' The federal government is pursuing the forfeiture of the dogs, after which the US Marshals Service would care for them, the department said.

UK Athletics upholds coach ban for sexual abuse of an athlete
UK Athletics (UKA) has given an indefinite suspension to hammer coach Christopher Black for the serious sexual abuse of an athlete. Black, 75, was found by an independent panel last year to have sexually abused a young athlete. The hammer coach appealed the findings in October 2024 but the decision released on August 5 rejected the appeal and made the indefinite suspension from all athletics activities — including coaching — final and binding. Advertisement Black's behaviour was judged to be approaching the 'most serious form of abuse a senior coach could subject a young athlete to'. The independent panel said nine charges were fully proven to a civil standard: five of sexual abuse, three of inappropriate sexual touching and one of verbal impropriety and inappropriate touching. Three further charges were found to be proved in part by the panel and two dismissed. The age gap between the coach and athlete was also noted. 'I could not refuse to let you do it because it was terrifying,' the athlete said, as detailed in a UKA report. 'I was absolutely terrified.' Black maintained his innocence throughout. When questioned by the panel, the former Olympic hammer thrower said he did not know what the Coach Licence Scheme was (the conditions that require all coaches to meet adequate training and codes of conduct) and said he had never been asked to go on a course. The release of the final decision comes just over a month after UKA permanently banned coach Chris Barnes from the sport after being found guilty of an intimate relationship with an athlete and sending racial slurs. It also comes one day after the governing body released improvements to their safeguarding and disciplinary processes after an independent safeguarding review. The key improvements included a clearer criteria for how cases should be handled, the power for the Case Management Group (CMG) to resolve lower-level cases and expanding the number of people that are permitted to carry out certain tasks such as notifying someone of an order. 'These are sensible and practical improvements that will make the system more responsive,' said UKA Head of Safeguarding Danny Williams in a statement. 'By allowing us to deal with level one or low-risk cases more quickly and proportionately, we can reduce the stress and delay that often affects both complainants and respondents. 'It also means our safeguarding panels can focus their attention where it's most needed — on more serious and complex matters.'
