Trump's attorney general drops fraud case tied to Covid vaccinations
Bondi, in a statement posted on X, said Michael Kirk Moore Jr., of Salt Lake County, Utah did not deserve the jail time he was facing. Moore was indicted by a federal grand jury in 2023 and his trial had begun earlier this month.
'Dr. Moore gave his patients a choice when the federal government refused to do so. He did not deserve the years in prison he was facing. It ends today,' Bondi said.
Covid-19 vaccine skeptics have been embraced by the Trump administration. The Pentagon, for example, has sought to re-enlist servicemembers who were ousted for refusing to be vaccinated during the pandemic.
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who for decades has sown doubt about the safety of vaccines contrary to evidence and research by scientists, wrote on X in April: 'Dr. Moore deserves a medal for his courage and his commitment to healing!'
According to a 2023 statement from the US Attorney's Office in Utah, Moore allegedly ran the false certifications out of a plastic surgery center. His activities allegedly included administering saline shots to minors, at the request of their parents, so the children would think they were receiving Covid-19 vaccines, the statement said.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, a US lawmaker from Georgia and staunch Trump supporter, had championed dropping the case against Moore, who she called a hero in a statement on Saturday.
'We can never again allow our government to turn tyrannical under our watch,' she said in a post on X.
The latest move by Bondi comes amid scrutiny of her firings of senior Justice Department officials who worked on investigations into Trump, stoking accusations of political retribution in a department whose mission is to enforce US laws.

New Delhi: Pending water bills have surged to a staggering Rs1.4 lakh crore, with commercial consumers and govt departments accounting for the lion's share of this outstanding amount. While commercial users owed Delhi Jal Board Rs66,000 crore and govt departments Rs61,000 crore, domestic consumers had unpaid dues of Rs15,000 crore, according to govt data. He said smart meters would be installed to prevent the problem of faulty billing from arising again. No decision has yet been taken on relief of the dues. An official said the was firmly on easing the load on domestic consumers even as the authorities try to recover the unpaid amounts. Verma said that DJB's software would also automatically deduct surcharges and issue fresh bills under the new scheme. In Oct and Nov 2022, the DJB portal logged over 10,000 complaints about wrong billing. The previous AAP govt promised a one-time settlement scheme last year, but could not execute it. To curb future billing disputes, DJB plans to replace the traditional meters with smart ones. Officials said that the smart meters would resolve all billing inaccuracies. The current practice of meter readers submitting outdated or incorrect images resulted in inaccurate billing, which eventually led to a compilation of underpaid bills. An official said that around 1,000 meter readers managed nearly 26.5 lakh water consumers across 41 DJB zones and this has been seen as ineffective over time. Officials said that Verma had asked the water utility to overhaul the billing and payment system as soon as possible. An application to make the payment process easier is also on the anvil. Sources said the DJB top echelon had been intimated that the current billing system led to many users not paying their bills due to several lacunae. Officials claimed the new metering system would eliminate the role of agents and touts who allegedly accepted bribes to clear bills.

Foreign Medical Graduates get relief as A.P. High Court asks APMC to issue PR to appellant
In a major relief for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs), who have been fighting for the Permanent Registrations (PRs) for 13 months, a Division Bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on July 9 overturned the judgment of the Single Judge Bench, passed on April 28, and directed the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council (APMC) to issue PR to an appellant in accordance to the National Medical Commission (NMC)'s June 19 notification within a month. A writ petition was filed by FMGs, seeking the High Court to order the APMC, then represented by the Registrar, to grant the PR to them since they have completed the mandatory one-year internship. In response, the APMC, citing the NMC's guidelines of November 22, 2023, and December 7, 2023, stated that the petitioners have not sufficiently compensated their online study with the offline studies abroad, and therefore, the APMC has not considered their request to issue PRs. On April 28, the Single Judge Bench, considering the NMC's June 7, 2024 notification, dismissed the petition. Later, an intra-court appeal was filed by an FMG, K. Vamsi. It may be noted that the NMC issued a notification on June 7 that mandated a two-year internship for FMGs who studied a part of their course online during the COVID-19 pandemic. But after it received backlash from FMGs across the country, the NMC issued another notice on June 19, 2024, in continuation of the first notice. The June 19 notification clarified that those who have sufficiently compensated for their online classes, took their final exams offline, are eligible for one-year internship. While many States followed the June 19 notification and allotted one-year internship to FMGs who have valid compensation certificates, Andhra Pradesh followed the previous guidelines that mandated two or three years of internship, stating that the certificates were not detailed. In the July 9's judgment, a Divisional Bench of the High Court overturned the April 28 ruling, and stated that the Single Judge did not consider the NMC's public notice dated June 19, 2024, before rejecting the petitioner's contention. The Bench, in its judgment, ordered that the APMC shall grant PR to the appellant, since he has completed the one-year mandatory internship as specified in the Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) Regulations, 2021, and as per the June 19 notice. The Bench said the APMC should verify the documents, and if the appellant 'is found to have met the necessary criterion of public notice dated 19.06.2024, PR shall be issued.' The Bench directed that if the APMC doubted the veracity of documents, the burden falls on it to ensure the validity of the documents. The Bench gave a timeline and said the entire exercise should be completed before August 9. Welcoming the judgment, the Andhra Pradesh Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association (APNA) said the verdict marks an end to the injustice faced by foreign medical graduates over the past year. APNA State president A.V. Subba Reddy said that now that the court ruled in favour of the appellant, PRs should be granted to all eligible candidates who meet the same criteria.
