Shubman Gill Did Nothing Wrong, England Deliberately Wasted Time: Parthiv Patel

News182 days ago
Parthiv Patel has backed Shubman Gill for his fierce reaction to England's time-wasting tactics during Day 3 of the Lord's Test.
After India were bowled out for 387, an identical scoreline to England's first innings total of 387 towards the end of Day 3 of the 3rd Test at Lord's, Shubman Gill and Co. were hoping to squeeze in a couple of overs in their attempt to land an early blow given the tricky phase. As it turned out, India were only able to bowl one over of Jasprit Bumrah thanks to the tactics deployed by English openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett that ate up the last few remaining minutes.
It was clear that England were trying to waste time so as to not face another over. Crawley copped a blow on his hand and immediately called for the physio, drawing sarcastic applause from Indian players.
A frustrated Gill engaged in a heated conversation with Crawley before firing a verbal volley, advising the England opener to 'grow some f***** b***s."
Gill later explained his anger wasn't towards what England did on the field but the fact that they took 90 seconds to arrive in the middle and begin their innings. He said it wasn't in the spirit of the game.
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel has backed Gill for his reaction while accusing England and other teams of using the term 'spirit of the game' conveniently when it suits them.
'No, it's not (surprising)," Parthiv responded to a News18 CricketNext query on being surprised at Gill's aggression on Day 3. 'We've seen him doing this during IPL too. It's just that. This sport is about expressing your emotions as long as you are not crossing the line. And I don't think Shubman will cross the line at all."
'It was clear how slowly the English batters were walking in. And I feel that whether it is England, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa, they use this word 'spirit of the game' very, very conveniently whenever they feel they want to use it," he added.
Patel said there was a deliberate attempt from England to waste time.
'There was nothing wrong in Shubman Gill asking in a press conference – asking English media or the public – whether it's ok to come to bat 90 seconds late – that's almost one over of Ravindra Jadeja. So that was a deliberate attempt, and on the field too. I don't think Shubham did anything wrong," Patel, who is associated with Gujarat Titans as assistant coach, said during the interaction facilitated by JioHotstar.
Having observed Gill from close quarters at GT, a franchise that the star batter leads in the IPL, Patel feels the young captain is showing improvement and will only get better.
India lost the series opener of their ongoing tour of England, a contest in which Gill made his Test captaincy debut. They bounced back with a record win in Birmingham before a close defeat at Lord's.
'As far as his (Gill's) captaincy is concerned, obviously, this is new to him. He's done (well), he's improving, there is no doubt about it. And at Gujarat Titans, whatever I've observed about him, he's been very assertive. He knows what he wants; he's very clear with his plans and ideas. So I'm sure with time, you will see very much improvement in his captaincy too," Patel said.

Manchester weather forecast today: Will rain save India in 4th Test?

As the crucial fourth Test between India and England enters Day 4 at Old Trafford, all eyes are once again on the weather, and not without reason. With England firmly in control and India struggling to stay afloat in the match and series, the weather could become a key factor in determining the outcome. Clouds return to Manchester after sunny Day 3 After a bright and clear third day of play, ominous clouds and cold winds swept into Manchester on Friday evening, raising concerns about possible interruptions on Day 4. Reporting from the venue, Times of India journalist Sahil Malhotra noted: 'Chilly conditions and overcast skies have replaced the sunshine. The forecast for Day 4 and Day 5 isn't promising. India had already struggled under similar cloud cover on Day 1, and if they're to bat on Day 4, it could once again test their resilience.' Manchester Weather Forecast for Day 4 According to the UK Met Office, Manchester is likely to see light rain early in the day, with skies remaining largely overcast. Temperatures are expected to hover between 16°C and 20°C throughout the day. Morning session: 50–60% chance of rain Afternoon (Tea): Rain probability drops to around 40% Although conditions are expected to gradually improve, the start of play could still face interruptions, a concern especially for India as they seek to close the deficit. India under pressure in hostile conditions India, currently 1-2 down in the five-match series, are facing an uphill battle. England closed Day 3 at a commanding 544/7, with Joe Root delivering a sublime 150 and Ben Stokes unbeaten on 77. Their lead of 186 runs puts pressure on India, who have never won a Test at Old Trafford. Compounding India's challenge is the mental barrier posed by overcast English conditions, which have historically troubled their batters. A rain-affected Day 4 could work either for or against them, depending on how well they adapt.

ENG vs IND live streaming: How to watch 4th Test Day 4 action for free?

The fourth day of the India vs England 4th Test at Old Trafford is poised for high drama as England tighten their grip on the match. After piling up a mammoth 544/7 in response to India's 358, the hosts hold a commanding 186-run lead with Ben Stokes (77*) and Liam Dawson (21*) set to continue. Joe Root's masterful 150 guided the hosts into total control, capitalising on lacklustre Indian bowling and the absence of traditional swing on a sun-baked Day 3. Earlier, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett's 166-run opening stand laid a formidable platform, further exposing India's inconsistent attack. For India, the fourth day is a test of resilience. The bowlers need quick wickets to prevent the deficit from growing, but an overcast, rain-threatened Manchester forecast brings its own complications. Rain has already delayed the scheduled start, with a 50–60% chance of showers hanging over the morning session. If play resumes, movement through the air might aid bowlers, but conditions remain unpredictable. Jasprit Bumrah tipped to join Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma after IND vs ENG Tests; 'Passion is there, but he has lost his…'

Jasprit Bumrah might be the world's best bowler in the longest format of the game but his struggles with workload in the ongoing Test series against England could possibly force him to rethink about his career in whites, felt former cricketer Mohammed Kaif. Bumrah, who took five-wicket hauls in the first and third Tests against England - both in a losing cause - looked a pale shadow in the ongoing fourth Test in Manchester. He just took the lone wicket of Jamie Smith as England are on course for a huge first innings lead against India. In a video posted on social media, Kaif claimed that the Indian team might need to prepare themselves without Bumrah at least in Tests going forward. In fact, prior to the start of the series, India head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed that he Bumrah will play three games. "I don't think you will see Jasprit Bumrah in the upcoming Tests, and he might retire. He is struggling, and there is a noticeable drop in pace. He is an honest person. If he feels he is not giving his 100 per cent for the country, win matches for his country or take wickets, it is my gut feeling that he will himself refuse," Kaif said. One of the major highlights of Bumrah's struggles in Manchester has been his drastic drop in pace. The 31-year-old, dropped from 140kph to the range of 130-135 in the fourth Test. Moreover, Bumrah too experienced fitness issues during the second session of the third day. He was seen holding his ankle and went off the field after bowling a sole over with the new ball, going for 11 runs. According to Kaif, going wicketless is one thing, but the drop in pace remains a massive concern. "Getting wickets or not is one thing. But bowling at 125 to 130 kph, and the wicket he got, the wicketkeeper had to dive forward; fit Bumrah's catch carried to a good height, irrespective of Joe Root or Ben Stokes. He is a player who can get anybody out according to his will. I feel passion is there, but he has lost his body and fitness," added Kaif. "His body is not supporting him. His inability to take wickets in this Test is a clear indicator that he will face issues in future Test matches. Maybe he might not play in future. Virat, Rohit and Ashwin have left. Maybe the time is coming when India will play without Bumrah. I hope my predictions are wrong," he concluded.
