Al Rawahi holds second place at the Jordan Rally
After six demanding gravel stages in the Dead Sea and Jordan Valley areas, the Autotek Škoda Fabia driver trailed the 19-time FIA Middle East champion Nasser Saleh al Attiyah by just 13.5 seconds. This was despite a slow puncture towards the end of the last stage.
Al Rawahi and his Jordanian co-driver Ata al Hmoud are bidding to win the FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) title for a second time, as well as trying to win the event in Jordan once again. The performance today also netted them the win in the opening round of the Jordan National Championship.
At the end of a dramatic day, where Al Attiyah and Al Rawahi were the class of the entire field.
Al Rawahi said: 'I think this rally overall is very tough and it is not easy to challenge Nasser over these stages. He has won it 16 times. Being just behind him and able to take some time, I am very happy. Tomorrow, is another day. We must also remember that I have an older car. I think we should be happy with the result today. I think we are on the limit. I don't think we can push any harder and we don't want mistakes.'
Al Rawahi was in scintillating form on the opening loop of three stages where he was more than a match for the road-sweeping Al Attiyah. The duo was separated by just 0.6 seconds on the 32 km opening speed test at Tal Hilali and then by a mere one-tenth of a second on stage two. But Al Rawahi was faster than his Qatari rival on the third stage of the loop at the historic Baptism Site and edged into a slender 0.8-second lead at the midday point.
Ata al Hmoud and Abdullah al Rawahi (R)
Al Rawahi said: 'It was a good day for us so far. The stages are quite tough and very tricky. We had a few moments but the times are good overall and we are leading after the first loop. I think we just need to keep focused and try to do our best. We need to be very consistent with our performance. You have no other choice but to go flat out. This afternoon, the same.'
Saturday's remaining three stages are repeated twice with action getting underway with a run though the Panorama stage of 17.12 km. The first passes through the Suwayma and Wadi Nar specials complete the morning's loop. The three timed tests are repeated in the afternoon before the post-event press conference and traditional ceremonial finish at the Dead Sea.

Oman beat Bahrain after Khorfakkan loss
MUSCAT, JULY 16 The Omani national wheelchair basketball team secured an important victory over the Bahraini Al Ittihad team with a score of 68-49, as part of the 9th West Asian Club Championship, hosted in the Jordanian capital, Amman, from July 13 to 19, 2025. The tournament is held under the supervision of the Asian Federation and hosted by the Ajyal Al Ghad Club, with matches taking place at Prince Hamzah Hall in the Hussein Youth City. The Omani team started the game cautiously in the first quarter, struggling to penetrate the Bahraini defense, which resulted in a limited number of points. On the other hand, the Bahraini team capitalised on fast breaks and ended the first quarter ahead 13-8. At the start of the second quarter, Oman's players showed a clear offensive resurgence, led by the outstanding Younis al Toubi, who scored several points from mid-range shots and drives to the basket, alongside precise movements from Hafidh Awlad Ahmed. The Omani team dominated the quarter, scoring 20 points to Bahrain's 8, overturning the score and ending the first half ahead 28-21. In the third quarter, the team continued its strong performance, displaying solid defensive organisation that limited Bahrain's offensive threat. Meanwhile, the attacking line remained effective, adding 20 points against the opponent's 16, extending the lead to 11 points by the end of the quarter (48-37). The fourth quarter saw a peak in Oman's performance, as the team intensified its defensive pressure and closed off spaces to Bahrain's key players, forcing them into multiple errors. The Omani team took advantage of these moments to score another 20 points, compared to 12 for Bahrain, sealing a comfortable win at 68-49. Standout performers in the match included Younis al Toubi with 34 points, Hafidh Awlad Ahmed with 22 points, and Ali al Ghasini, who added 6 points all contributing significantly to Oman's dominance. The team had started its campaign with a loss against UAE's Khorfakkan Club, 43-65, in a match marked by several defensive and offensive errors. The quarter scores were: 13-19, 10-24, 8-16, and 12-5, as the team struggled to keep up with the fast-paced performance of their Emirati counterparts. The Sultanate of Oman's delegation includes: Mohammed al Hinai as the head of delegation, Hamoud al Amiri as head coach, Moosa al Siyabi as assistant coach, and ten players: Zaher al Otaibi, Hafidh Awlad Ahmed, Younis al Toubi, Ali al Ghasini, Ahmed al Numani, Maktoum al Muqbali, Khamis al Masoudi, Ashraf al Khasibi, Amjad al Wahaibi, and Salem al Hashami. The national team hopes to deliver strong performances in the upcoming matches and compete for top positions, reflecting the development of the sport in Oman and the growing support for para-sports.

Ali Olwan hits hat-trick as Jordan blank Oman
MUSCAT, June 5 The Jordanian star striker Ali Olwan delivered a crucial victory to his team as Jordan blanked Oman 3-0 in their AFC Asian Qualifiers - Road to 26 Group B tie on Thursday night at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex. The emphatic win boosted Jordan's chances of securing direct berth qualification to the Fifa World Cup next year for the first time in their history as they reached 16 points. On the other hand, the defeat meant Red Warriors dashed their hopes for a top-two finish and now redirects their efforts toward the playoff spot route as they remained at ten points. The first half saw a cautious start from both sides with each team tightening their defensive lines to avoid an early setback. Jordan dominated midfield possession and had the first significant threat when Moosa al Tamari found the net in the 11th minute only to be flagged offside. Oman's first reply came moments later, as Abdulrahman al Mushaifri fired a powerful effort that narrowly missed the left post. In the 23rd minute, Essam al Subhi had a clear opportunity to score but was denied by a brilliant save from Jordanian goalkeeper Yazeed Abu Laila. The Red Warriors mounted more pressure, with Thani al Rushaidi heading over from a corner and al Mushaifri again being blocked from long range. However, momentum shifted in Jordan's favor after Khalid al Buraiki conceded a penalty following a VAR review. Ali Olwan converted from the spot in the 35th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The first half concluded with Oman pushing for an equaliser but unable to break through a disciplined Jordanian defense. The second half saw Jordan coach Jamal Selami bring on Saleem Obaid for Mohammad Abu Al Nadi in a move that revitalised Jordan's attack. In the 52nd minute, Olwan doubled the lead with a calm finish off a pinpoint assist from Yazan Al Naimat. Twelve minutes later, Olwan completed his hat-trick, latching onto a perfectly timed pass from Moosa al Tamari and converting from close range to make it 3-0 in a scoreline that proved insurmountable. Final Push Oman coach Rasheed Jaber reacted quickly as he introduced Hatim al Roshdi for Harib al Saadi, Al Mundher al Alawi for Salah Al Yahyaei and Zaher Al Aghbari for Jameel Al Yahmadi. Despite the changes, Jordan's disciplined defensive line absorbed the pressure well. Oman's efforts, particularly from Ali al Busaidi and Abdulrahman al Mushaifri lacked the final touch, as Jordan held firm to seal a clinical 3-0 victory in Muscat.
