Suspect in violent Mount Pleasant robbery released

Canada's bail policies are back in the spotlight, with the man accused in a violent Vancouver robbery back on the street.
James Chartrand, 60, is accused of demanding money and threatening a Mount Pleasant shopkeeper as she closed up her family store last September.
'She was choked, she was thrown to the ground, and those were just the physical things that happened to her,' said Vancouver police Const. Tania Visintin.

The alleged assault was broken up by a trio of passersby who heard the victim's screams as she was dragged into an alley. The suspect fled and was arrested nearby.
Chartrand was initially released, but was re-arrested in April.
He has since been charged with robbery, assault by choking, assault with a weapon, disguising his face and uttering threats.

He has also been released again.
'It's not just concerning to police that this man is out, it's very concerning to the victim,' Visintin said.
Global News attended a home in Surrey listed as Chartrand's address on court documents.
The man who answered the door identified himself as a 'friend,' but said Chartrand wasn't home, adding he sometimes stays at a place in Vancouver.
Chartrand's release came with several conditions, including no contact with the victim.
He is due back in court on July 17.

Nearly one year after a Surrey, B.C., businessman was doused in accelerant and set on fire inside his Whalley currency exchange, the suspect, Kalid Yimer, has been charged with the attempted murder of Rahat Rao. Yimer was to appear in the Edmonton Court of Justice on that date on charges of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, and uttering threats to cause damage. 2:07 Surrey burn victim recovering in hospital The accused was not present, according to the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General, and an arrest warrant was issued. Pannu said Rao's wife came to Canada from Pakistan only months before her husband was attacked and badly burned. 'They (Rao's family members) have quite a bit of concern as why police (are) not able to catch him,' he said. Rao remains in hospital undergoing reconstructive surgeries, said Pannu, after suffering third-degree burns to more than half of his body in what RCMP believe was a targeted incident. No motive has been revealed and Pannu said Rao, who used to share Islam outside his business, 'never did anything wrong in his life.' Lindsey Houghton also said he's been asked to hold off on conducting any interviews on the file until at least next week. 'It's a big mystery,' said Pannu. 'That's why the family is more scared, more upset you know, the person is still at large.'

Vernon, B.C. meat shop broken into, inventory, cash stolen
An overnight break-in has Vernon, B.C. meat shop owner Stuart McKnight wondering — where's the beef? McKnight arrived at Yankee Flats Meats Monday morning to find the front door kicked in, cash missing and inventory gone. 'Somebody kicked in our front door and came in, entered the premises and sort of helped themselves to some of our stuff,' McKnight said. About $500 in cash and another $500 worth of meat were taken, along with damage to the property. The shop opened last year and moved just six months ago — only a block away in downtown Vernon. In that short time, it's already weathered two break-ins. 'It almost comes with the territory, unfortunately. We love being part of the local retail community, but there's a dark side downtown where you become a sitting target for people who just want to grab and go,' McKnight explained. Suspect in Vancouver Lapu Lapu Day attack appears in court
The man charged with murder in a vehicle attack on a Vancouver street festival in April made a brief court appearance on Tuesday. Kai-Ji Adam Lo is facing eight counts of second-degree murder in the April 26 tragedy at the Lapu Lapu Day festival, where 11 people were killed and dozens more injured. As of June 26, six people injured in the attack remained in hospital. On Tuesday, Lo appeared via video as his lawyer applied for the disclosure of psychiatric and forensic records ahead of a more fulsome hearing on his fitness to stand trial. 2:00 40 days since Lapu Lapu festival tragedy That two-day hearing is scheduled for July 23 and 24. In 2024, Lo's brother was murdered. Soon after that, his mother attempted suicide. Neighbours say they were aware of problems at the home, one saying they sometimes heard screaming from the home and that police cars were sometimes there. Lo remains in custody.
