With PFI down, Pakistan-based Farhatullah Ghauri leads Al Ummah revival in south India

Hans India27-07-2025
The ban on the Popular Front of India (PFI) has created a vacuum, and multiple terror groups are trying to occupy that space. While the PFI has not been able to revive itself since most of its top leaders are behind bars, one old-time group, the Al Ummah, has been making inroads in the southern states.
The blast at the Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru was an eye-opener for the agencies, since it had the Al Ummah signature. Further investigations have found that the entire responsibility of reviving the Al Ummah has been handed over to Farhatullah Ghauri, an operative based out of Pakistan.
The Al Ummah is not an unknown outfit in south India. It was the same group that attempted to assassinate senior BJP leader L.K. Advani in Coimbatore in 1998. Founded by Syed Ahmed Basha in the early 1990s, the same outfit was responsible for the 1993 bombings outside the RSS office in Chennai, which claimed 11 lives. While carrying out terror attacks, the group, since its inception, has been actively urging the Indian Muslim youth to undertake terror attacks against pro-Hindu leaders and activists.
The agencies say that the revival attempts being made by these groups cannot be taken one bit lightly. Al Ummah has had leaders who have been popular with the local Muslim population. An example of this was the funeral of Basha.
There was a huge controversy around the funeral, with many questioning the need for a procession. In fact, there were also condolences that poured in from some political leaders, indicating the clout he enjoyed. Finally, the funeral took place on December 17, 2024, with 2,000 Tamil Nadu Police and Rapid Action Force personnel being deployed for security reasons.
The Al-Ummah at the time of its formation had said that it was being founded to avenge the Babri Masjid demolition. However, later on, it operated as small groups such as the Base Movement and took on the system. Members of the outfit were unhappy with the conviction of Basha and the manner in which the system handled the Abdul Nasar Madani case. When it operated as the Base Movement, it attempted to target the judiciary and police officers.
The Base Movement, however, failed to take off, and this set off the revival plans. The outfit decided that it would be called the Al Ummah itself, as the name resonates with many in south India.
On encrypted messaging channels, the Al Ummah, led by the Pakistan-based Ghauri, 59, circulated messages indicating that it was time to revive. The message was titled: "Let us pledge to rebuild the Babri Masjid".
Further, the cadres have also created a group called Sawt al Haq on the secure messaging platform, Signal. Created in December 2024, following the death of Basha, the messaging groups today have over 150 members, thus suggesting the rapid rate at which it has been growing.
The first message to be posted on the group read: "The Sawt ul Haq team is proud to bring the story and history of Al Ummah to you. This is a humble attempt by Ustad Farhatullah Ghori and the team of Sawt ul Haq to share the profound efforts, sacrifices, and valour of the Mujahideen of Al Ummah. We aim to educate and inspire by honouring the luminous path they forged and the legacy they left behind. Through this platform, we seek to offer an informative experience that highlights the significance of their journey and the values they fought for. By exploring their history, we can better appreciate the sacrifices made and the lessons learned, ensuring their enduring legacy continues to inspire generations to come. We hope this effort serves as a reflection and connection with the remarkable individuals who laid the foundation for the battle of Ghazwa e Hind."
In addition to messages, Ghauri has also posted several videos. He has posted a long video praising Basha and calling him a true warrior who never begged for mercy or concessions from the enemies. He also heaped praises on the Rameshwaram Cafe bomber.
For the Al Ummah, Ghauri is their best bet. He is radical, an extremist, and knows the southern states well as he originally hails from Hyderabad. His first stint was when he joined the Darsgah Jihad-o-Shahadat or the Centre for Jihad and Martyrdom. In 1995, he left for Saudi Arabia and from there he began raising funds to finance the terror activities of the Al Ummah. Apart from the Al Ummah, he has helped in other terror missions such as the Akshardham attack in 2002 and the 2005 suicide bombing at the Task Force office in Hyderabad.
These suggest clearly that Ghauri is a major threat, and hence the agencies are on his trail. The Intelligence agencies have warned the state police to keep a close watch on the gatherings, possibly by Al Ummah recruits. The agency also says that Jihadi groups are desperate for a strong terror group in the south, and in Al Ummah, they find their answer.

Hyderabad: In a high-stakes political battle, chief minister A Revanth Reddy is set to lead a dharna at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Wednesday, demanding Presidential assent for two key bills that seek to raise BC reservations in the state to 42 per cent. Joined by his cabinet colleagues, Congress MPs, MLAs, MLCs, and hundreds of BC leaders, Revanth is taking the fight to the national capital, urging President Droupadi Murmu to approve the bills, which were sent to her by the Telangana governor three months ago. Mumbra accused pleads guilty and sentenced for involvement in fake currency racket

Mumbai: In yet another case probed by the NIA , an accused pleaded guilty, forfeiting his right to a trial. A special court recently convicted and sentenced Mumbra-based accused, Jasim alias Wasim Shaikh, to five years and seven months of rigorous imprisonment for his involvement in a fake currency racket. Although Jasim initially pleaded not guilty, he later filed a plea to plead guilty, stating he was doing so voluntarily and without pressure. He cited being behind bars for over five years and seven months and requested mercy and a minimum sentence. Sentencing him to the time he already spent in jail since his arrest on May 18, 2019, until he was granted bail on Dec 27, 2024, the special NIA judge, Chakor Baviskar, pointed out that Jasim was earlier convicted for the theft of a mobile handset and was lodged in Presidency Correctional Home, Kolkata, where he met co-accused Isak Khan, who persuaded him to get involved in the fake currency racket. "Certainly, this is the first offence of this nature against this accused Jasim. Antecedents of similar offences are not reported against him... In my opinion, if a sentence of imprisonment up to this period with some amount of fine is imposed on this accused Jasim, it would meet the ends of justice," the judge said. The judge said that they confirmed the accused is pleading guilty bona fide. "He also contended that he is pleading guilty without any fear or favour. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Private Browsers That Keep You Safe vividtrendlab Undo He submitted that he is repenting for his wrong," the judge said. Isak, who was a convicted felon in a separate case involving fake currency, convinced Jasim to deal in Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) after his release. After being released on bail in April 2019, the following month, Jasim travelled to Gauribidanur, Karnataka, where he collected 164 fake Rs 500 notes, with a face value of Rs 82,000, from an associate of Isak's named Radhakrishna. He returned to Mumbra on May 19, 2019, and kept the fake currency. On May 18, 2019, based on information from the National Investigation Agency (NIA), police raided Jasim's residence in Mumbra, Thane. During the raid, police recovered and seized the 164 FICN, as well as 14 mobile phones, SIM cards, and various debit and credit cards. Jasim was arrested, and a case was registered at the Mumbra Police Station. The NIA later took over the investigation. Upon completion of the investigation, the NIA filed a chargesheet.

Gangster claims hand in property dealer murder in Gurgaon, threatens Fazilpuria

Gurgaon: In what is being believed to be an escalation of a months long extortion saga, gangster Sunil Sardhania has claimed responsibility for the murder of Rohit Shokeen — a close associate of singer Fazilpuria. Shokeen (39) was gunned down in a hail of bullets near Palm Hills society in Sector 77 on Monday night. The brutal killing appears to be the latest chapter in an ongoing dispute involving Fazilpuria, who has been under pressure to pay Rs 5 crore to his former friend and producer Deepak Nandal. The murder follows an attack on the singer's car last month, for which, too, Sardhania had claimed responsibility. Shokeen, a Delhi-based property dealer, was struck by around 15 bullets. Three of them were recovered during autopsy — two from his pelvis and one from the abdomen. The victim suffered multiple entry and exit wounds, leaving his body severely damaged. In a social media post following the murder, Sardhania — believed to be a member of the Himanshu Bhau gang — explicitly took credit for the hit. "I, Sunil Sardhania, got Rohit Shokeen murdered on Southern Peripheral Road in Gurgaon. Fazilpuria will have to pay our money or else many people will die in this fight," the post declared, mentioning both Deepak Nandal and one Rao Inderjeet Yadav. You Can Also Check: Gurgaon AQI | Weather in Gurgaon | Bank Holidays in Gurgaon | Public Holidays in Gurgaon Cops said they were working to authenticate Sardhania's social media claims. The roots of this violence trace back to a bitter fallout between Fazilpuria and Nandal, who had previously produced the singer's songs. Police sources said Shokeen had acted as a guarantor for Fazilpuria in his financial dealings with Nandal. Fazilpuria has, however, consistently denied any loan arrangements, saying that only music labels had invested in his career. The attack was executed by two motorcyclists with covered faces — one wearing a helmet and the other concealing his identity with a muffler. Shokeen, who had borrowed an automatic car from his elder brother for a trip to Noida, was accompanied by a Delhi-based friend who survived the attack. According to police accounts, the shooting occurred when Shokeen's friend crossed the road to buy cigarettes, leaving the victim alone outside the vehicle. The assailants, who had apparently been trailing the car, seized this moment to strike. "They were definitely chasing the victim's car and attacked him as he stopped in Sector 77. We have vital clues and will soon arrest the suspects," a police officer said. Investigators briefly detained a food delivery worker who happened to be at the scene, but found no connection to the crime. A witness from a nearby liquor store said he heard "one gunshot initially, followed by multiple bullets being fired continuously". Shokeen was rushed to the nearby Civil Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. A case was filed under sections 103(1) (murder), 3(5) (act done by several persons), and provisions of the Arms Act at Kherki Daula police station, based on a complaint by the victim's elder brother, Vijay Shokeen. The body was released to the family following an autopsy.
