Sniffer dog once-honoured for finding nine missing people dies after eating nail-filled sausages that had been thrown in his kennel in 'vile, cowardly act'
Seven-year-old bloodhound Bruno was found lying in a pool of his own blood yesterday morning at an animal training centre in Taranto, southern Italy, after the deadly treats were thrown into his kennel.
Bruno, who was once honoured by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for his services, died in agony from internal bleeding, his trainer Arcangelo Caressa said.
Meloni, who was pictured alongside Bruno in 2022, condemned those involved and called the killing a 'vile, cowardly, unacceptable act'.
'Thank you for everything you did, Bruno', she added.
Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the dog's horrific killing, while cops are reviewing surveillance footage from the training facility to identify those responsible.
Bruno had worked on missing persons cases in the southern Apulia region and helped find nine people who had disappeared.
He had also taken part in operations aimed at dismantling groups that organised clandestine dog fights.
It is believed he was killed in an act of revenge.
Trainer Mr Caressa paid an emotional tribute to Bruno, writing on Facebook: 'This morning I died alongside you.
'You fought your whole life to save humans and now it was a human who did this to you.'
He added that many of the missing persons he had located were Alzheimer's who had wandered off on their own and gotten lost.
'Some families wrote to me this morning to thank me again. Their loved ones are alive thanks to Bruno. And now he is no longer with us.'

Awful photos show what happened after volunteer fire chief was swept away by floods
A heroic volunteer firefighter was seen being swept off a road while rushing to help flood victims in Texas - with a horrifying photo of his crushed car since emerging. Colleagues watched as Marble Falls Volunteer Fire Chief Michael Phillips's emergency vehicle was swept away by floodwaters on Saturday as he responded to a call in Burnet County, near Austin. He is one of two people missing after his emergency vehicle was swept away by floodwaters as he responded to a call in Burnet County, near Austin. 'We had our deputies traveling the county, checking low-water spots as the rain was coming in, and we had three of our own deputies that were stranded on roadways – safe but stranded – and we watched unfortunately as his vehicle did go off the roadway,' Chief Deputy Alan Trevino told CNN. Hours later, Phillips' vehicle was found crushed beyond recognition and killed with dirt. He was not inside it, with the hunt for the first responder continuing Monday. Phillips is one of two people missing in the county; The other is a 17-year-old girl. Meanwhile the remains of three people were found in the area. They have not yet been publicly identified. It comes as more than 80 people have died in Central Texas and many more are still missing, including at least 10 girls from a summer camp. The emergency vehicle Phillips was driving in was found but he was not inside it Search teams are using helicopters, boats and drones to look for victims in flash floods that have torn across central Texas since the at the start of the July Fourth weekend. At the center of the tragedy is the scenic Texas Hill Country, where volunteers and some families of the missing have searched the riverbanks despite being asked not to do so. But authorities in surrounding areas closer to Austin, the state capital, have also recovered victims from floodwaters. On Monday, rescuers maneuvering through challenging terrain, high waters and snakes including water moccasins continued their desperate search for the missing, including 10 girls and a counselor from Camp Mystic. Governor Greg Abbott said there were 41 people confirmed to be unaccounted for across the state and more could be missing. In Kerr County, home to Camp Mystic and other youth camps in the Texas Hill Country, searchers have found the bodies of 68 people, including 28 children, Sheriff Larry Leitha said in the afternoon. He pledged to keep searching until 'everybody is found' from Friday's flash floods. Ten other deaths were reported in Travis, Burnet, Kendall, Tom Green and Williamson counties, according to local officials. The death toll is certain to rise over the next few days, said Col. Freeman Martin of the Texas Department of Public Safety. The governor warned that additional rounds of heavy rains lasting into Tuesday could produce more life-threatening flooding, especially in places already saturated. Authorities faced growing questions about whether enough warnings were issued in an area long vulnerable to flooding and whether enough preparations were made.

Major update in tragic ‘Ghost Children' case after siblings, 9 & 6, found in forest ‘wearing nappies & unable to speak'
TWO "ghost" kids found living in squalor in the woods unable to speak after severe neglect are to be put up for adoption, the authorities said. The pair's father allegedly cut them off from the world after becoming "obsessed" with Covid, but they were discovered in the northern Italian countryside by horrified cops. 5 5 5 The "filthy" kids, aged nine and six, were still wearing nappies, not attending school, and able to communicate only in their own primitive language. They had never been officially registered and were completely off-grid - prompting the "ghost children" label from local media. Their dad, named only as 54-year-old Dutch national Frederik, claimed he isolated them in their "bunker" home near Lauriano to prevent them from catching Covid. He insisted they were being home-schooled in English and Italian using material he found online after the kids were discovered in April, it is understood. Frederik also claimed that he had been intending to register the kids - but never got round to it. The dad said: "I'm not a paranoid person who wants to hide from the world. I just enjoy doing things alone and spending time with my family." However, his explanations for keeping his children in miserable isolation have not convinced the authorities. They were initially taken into state care, and now it has been confirmed they will be put up for adoption. It's unclear whether this will allow regular prospective parents to take custody of the children - whether it will lead to them being put into specialist care. Frederik told local newspaper Corriere Torino: "My wife and I provide them with everything they need. Lag chillingly said 'that's for Sarah Payne' after knifing her evil killer in bloodbath 'revenge attack' in prison cell "They have lots of toys, each their own laptop, lots of musical instruments and their own ski equipment. "They go pony riding at the stables and spend a lot of time outdoors in restaurants and museums." The children were reportedly born in Germany before being moved over to a town in Turin. Harrowing images of the ramshackle farm show random broken and abandoned furniture thrown outside and derelict trampolines that had clearly been left to rot. Rubbish was also captured strewn across the garden. The reclusive family was only discovered when cops arrived at their hillside farm to evacuate them after a flooding alert. 5 5 The Turin Juvenile Court ordered the immediate removal of the children from their parents. It said in its ruling: "There are facts that suggest that the minors are deprived of adequate assistance from their parents or relatives who are required to provide it." During the removal process, concerns were raised about their mum, who is said to have shown little interest in her own kids, NL Times reports. It's thought she is homeless, the site added. Local mayor Mara Baccolla said: "It is a very delicate matter. "These children can finally find a balance and have access to a life worthy of the name." She also reportedly spoke of meeting the dad once and described him as being "very reserved" who was unable to speak Italian. Residents of the town near the farm shared their shock at learning of the children's existence. Frederik's explanation FREDERIK claimed his children were registered in Germany and that he and his wife decided to move to Italy three years ago. He told reporters: "I'll explain [...] we bought this land three years ago for €120,000. The idea was to move from Germany, where we lived. "During this period, we went back and forth because before settling in Italy, I had to fix up the house. "Three months before the flood, we finally moved in. During this whole period, we still gave the children an education, in English and Italian, using some websites. "I know, we should have reported them to the Municipality, the intention was to do it soon, but my wife has health problems and there was no time. "They are not ghosts, they have a name and surname and are registered in Germany." Frederik also said that he is financially stable: "We still have a house in Germany, my grandfather has others in the Netherlands and I earn money by renting them out. "I invested another €100,000 in this house."

Italian MP and animal rights activist Michela Vittoria Brambilla has urged the police to bring those responsible to suggested Bruno had been targeted by criminals because of his role in seizing dogs used in fighting. A newly strengthened law, spearheaded by Brambilla, can punish anyone who kills an animal using torture by up to four years in prison and a €60,000 (£51,000) has called for this law to be applied due to Bruno's "long and painful death" from internal bleeding, brought on by the nail-filled sausages."We owe it to this noble animal," she said in a statement.
