Feature: Music offers pathway for U.S.-China understanding

NEW YORK, May 2 (Xinhua) -- Music continues to serve as a powerful channel for understanding between China and the United States, said scholars and musicians who gathered at the annual international conference of the U.S.-China Music Institute.
The three-day event, titled "Exploration and Resonance: Chinese Music in the West," opened on Thursday at the China Institute in New York. It was co-hosted by the institute and the Bard College Conservatory of Music. The event is part of the broader work of the U.S.-China Music Institute, which is based at Bard and has been promoting exchange between the two cultures through education and performance.
"If you look at two countries, two regions, or two cultures through a political lens, you see conflict," Jindong Cai, director of the U.S.-China Music Institute, told Xinhua. "But if you look at them through a cultural point of view, you find connection. Music, in particular, is impossible to decouple."
Cai recalled that in 1972, following then U.S. President Richard Nixon's historic visit to China, one of the first steps toward renewed engagement was an invitation for an American orchestra to perform. The Philadelphia Orchestra became the first U.S. orchestra to visit China in 1973, marking a symbolic moment in thawing relations between the two countries.
"If you look at the past 50 years, so many American orchestras, musicians, and singers have visited China. And they've seen that China produces incredible musicians and compositions."
American and Chinese musicians understand each other much better than any political situation, and they definitely want to continue collaborating, Cai said.
Sheila Melvin, a writer and scholar who spoke at the conference, said cultural exchanges between the two countries, dating back to as early as the 19th century, attracted western musicians to understand Chinese music and the community. "I just hope we can have more of" that kind of people-to-people communication, she told Xinhua.
Such exchange remains essential today, experts said. "If you have more Chinese coming to the U.S., obviously, there will be more interest in China," said Frank Kouwenhoven, a Dutch scholar and founder of CHIME, a platform for Chinese music. "If you have more Chinese students studying at an American university, then more Americans will also have some exposure to people from that corner of the Earth."
The conference also highlighted contemporary efforts to build cultural bridges. The U.S.-China Music Institute runs a program in partnership with the Central Conservatory of Music that includes four main components: a degree program for Chinese instruments at Bard Conservatory, an annual China Now Music Festival in New York, an academic conference in the spring, and a summer program for high school students from both countries.
Xiaogang Ye, dean of the School of Music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said Chinese music today may offer something urgently needed, which is a sense of balance and emotional clarity.
"Right now, we're seeing deep divisions across the globe. In this increasingly polarized world, perhaps Chinese music can take on a new role, not just as an artistic tradition, but as a form of emotional mediation, a means of restoring clarity and calm," said Ye, who is also a composer and president of the Chinese Musicians' Association.
Thursday's panel discussion also featured Li Zhong, vice chairman of the University Council at the Central Conservatory of Music in China, and concluded with the performances by a guqin duet and a traditional Chinese ensemble. The evening program featured a concert by the Bard East-West Ensemble. The conference will continue in the coming days with additional sessions and performances at Bard College.

According to the zoo, it is a rehearsal for a scenario involving an escaped animal. A staff member was dressed as the zoo's superstar, the pygmy hippopotamus Moo Deng, and pretended to have escaped from her enclosure. While on the run, the mascot Moo Deng attacked a member of staff, giving them her famous bite. As staff members cordoned off the area, a team of veterinarians and animal care staff then rounded Moo Deng up and 'sedated' her. As the mascot passed out, a group of staff carried her onto a stretcher and into an ambulance. They then ran a health check on her and made sure she was fit to be returned to her exhibit area. The playful video has gained 53,000 reactions and 1,700 comments on the zoo's social media page, which has amassed 560,000 followers. Many said they were amused by the clip. 'I laughed throughout the whole clip,' one person said. 'It is so much fun. I want it to be on Netflix,' said another. 'Be careful. The hippo is a fierce species,' another joked. 'It is hot and tiring, but the staff in the Moo Deng suit is working hard,' said a fourth. The real Moo Deng was in her enclosure for the duration of the drill, resting after her extravagant birthday celebration event, according to the Bangkok Post. On July 10, Moo Deng celebrated her first birthday. The zoo held a four-day party for her and prepared a 20kg cake made from her favourite tropical fruits. Moo Deng, whose name means 'bouncy pork' in Thai, captured the hearts of fans all over the world shortly after her birth for her naughty and charming character. Her carers have been posting moments of her trying to bite them, playing with a hosepipe, and mimicking her mother, 26-year-old Jona, who lives beside her, eating. She has since inspired memes and products such as blushers and clothing. Many people have also dressed as her to attend events, one of the most famous cosplayers being Chinese-American comedian and Saturday Night Live cast member Bowen Yang. The drill featuring the Moo Deng mascot was part of the zoo's annual safety plan, the zoo's director, Narongwit Chodchoi, said. Chodchoi said the drill 'helps us build confidence among staff and assure our visitors that we are fully prepared for even the most unexpected situations'.

Feeling deceived, a netizen shared her frustration on Xiaohongshu, a Chinese lifestyle platform, after travelling a long way to the cafe in Qingdao, Shandong province. The woman, who enjoys ­exploring different cafes and shops, said there was no real sea at the ­backdrop or lemon tree in sight unlike what was featured online. Her post went viral and drew a wave of sarcastic comments. A social media user said: 'Good thing you posted this – I might have gone myself.' Outdoor filming began at City Hall and the Esplanade seafront here yesterday, with additional shoots scheduled at several well-known attractions until Monday. The 14 finalists will wear traditional Nyonya attire and participate in a swimsuit segment, with local cuisine tasting sessions included in the itinerary. TVB stars Benjamin Yuen Wai-ho and Moon Lau Pui-yuet are also in town, joining the shoot as special guests. Yuen, who won the Mr Hong Kong title 17 years ago, hoped the contestants would enjoy the experience despite the tight schedule and challenges. 'The process will be tough and challenging, but it will be valuable for growth and learning,' he said. Yuen added he was glad to be part of the shoot and looked forward to relaxing and sampling local food. Lau, who was crowned second runner-up in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant 2013, said the contestants should not shy away from expressing themselves. 'Since I do not have to participate in the swimsuit segment, I will gladly 'take on' more of the local food on behalf of the contestants,' she said jokingly when met outside the City Hall yesterday. Welcoming them on-site was Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai. Also present were Air Itam assemblyman Joseph Ng, Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan, Berapit assemblyman Heng Lee Lee and Penang Global Tourism chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan. Wong said the state's global visibility would be enhanced through the lens of a major Chinese-language entertainment brand. He said the Miss Hong Kong pageant, which began in 1946 and organised by TVB since 1973, is one of the most recognised beauty contests in the Chinese-speaking world. 'Its decision to film in Penang shows the state's growing appeal as an international filming destination. 'This is a historic moment. We see it as a chance to showcase Penang's cultural depth and modern appeal to audiences worldwide,' he was quoted as saying by state publisher Buletin Mutiara. Wong said the filming was made possible through collaboration between the Penang government and Hong Kong-based budget airline HK Express, following several weeks of discussions. He added that HK Express would double its daily flights between Hong Kong and Penang starting Oct 26. This followed a promotional campaign in late June, when Wong led a Penang delegation to Hong Kong under the theme 'Penang: Not the Penang You Know' to showcase the state's diverse cultural and tourism offerings.
