It's a good time to be a nostalgic millennial
The Backstreet Boys are playing to sold-out crowds. Lindsay Lohan is starring in a new 'Freaky Friday' movie. And former 'Dawson's Creek' co-stars and exes Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson were recently spotted filming a new project in New York City. No, it's not the early 2000s — but millennials feel like they're so back. As the saying goes, what's old often becomes new again. And millennials, typically defined as individuals born between the early 1980s and the mid-1990s, are now at a point in their lives where their generational nostalgia is front and center. This recent surge in millennial-focused pop culture serves as 'the next level of escapism' for the generation, said Kate Kennedy, author of 'One in a Millennial: On Friendship, Feelings, Fangirls, and Fitting In.' 'It returns us to a time when our biggest worry was getting in line for a CD, not whether we would be able to afford a house,' Kennedy said. At the Sphere in Las Vegas, that sentiment was echoed by thousands of Backstreet Boys concertgoers, many wearing all-white attire in homage to the band's 'Millennium' album, singing along to hits like 'Drowning.' Those who couldn't attend watched the concerts unfold on TikTok — where some videos have amassed millions of views. 'This healed more of my childhood in 1.5 hours than any therapist has,' one TikTok user wrote in the caption of their video from the show. 'I feel like I just time traveled,' another creator wrote in the text of their video from the concert. 'At the Sphere, listening to Backstreet Boys, wearing an all white 90s outfit, taking Jell-O shots.' Kennedy, who went to the Backstreet Boys concert last weekend, described nostalgia as a 'connective tissue that makes people feel less alone and less judgmental toward themselves, because other people like what they like, too.' 'I think we're a more lonely and isolated generation as adults than we ever anticipated that we would be in our youth,' she said, adding that millennials 'straddle two very different eras in terms of technology and information.' Generations 'can be hard on each other online,' Kennedy noted. But now, 'after several years of being called cringe, or 'cheugy,' we millennials are leaning in.' The longing for the millennial era has even crossed generational lines. Gen Zers, who once mocked millennial culture, are now romanticizing it. On TikTok, hundreds of users have recently posted tributes to all things millennial — from Tumblr and skinny jeans to upbeat music, Barack Obama and, perhaps most notably, HBO's TV series 'Girls.' Perhaps sensing that enthusiasm, a string of early 2000s artists have stepped back into the spotlight. Nelly, Creed and The All-American Rejects — all staples of the late '90s and early aughts — have launched tours. Beyoncé brought her Destiny's Child bandmates Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland on stage for her final 'Cowboy Carter' show in Las Vegas last weekend, marking the group's first reunion in seven years. Hollywood is also jumping on the trend. Studios continue to green-light sequels, prequels and spinoffs based on beloved titles from the '90s and 2000s. Shots of Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt filming the sequel to the 2006 hit 'The Devil Wears Prada' in New York City have caused a frenzy. Fans online are analyzing the actors' high-fashion looks and others are reportedly lining up to catch glimpses of the stars in person as they shoot, according to Variety. Adam Sandler's 'Happy Gilmore 2,' which came out almost 30 years after the 1996 film, debuted to 46.7 million views on Netflix, making it the streamer's largest U.S. film opening ever.

Parent Trap star open to a reboot — under one condition
The Parent Trap star Lisa Ann Walter is fully on board for a reboot of the hit 1998 film — as long as the writer stays the same. 'One hundred percent if Nancy Meyers wrote it,' Walter said at a recent Abbott Elementary event. Meyers co-wrote The Parent Trap, which also marked her feature film directorial debut. She, of course, went on to write some of the biggest rom-coms in history, including Something's Gotta Give, The Holiday, and It's Complicated. The Parent Trap not only launched her career as a director but also established her signature cozy, aspirational aesthetic Speaking further to her idea of a reboot, Walter, who played housekeeper Chessy in the hit 1998 film, said she would want fellow stars Lindsay Lohan and Dennis Quaid involved, too. 'Dennis [Quaid] has said that he doesn't think it's doable without Natasha, and I understand that,' Walter said of British actor Richardson, who died in 2009 at age 45 after a ski accident. 'The movie — it's a kids' story, but it's a love story. So to have a love story that involves that grief, that sadness — if it was written beautifully, maybe it's doable.' The film, which was a remake of the 1961 original, catapulted Lohan to fame as she portrayed twins Hallie and Annie James, who were separated by their parents shortly after birth. The twins, who were living across the pond from one another, connect on a whim at a summer camp their respective parents sent them to. Quaid starred as the twins' father, Nick Parker, while Richardson played their mother, Elizabeth James. Elaine Hendrix played Quaid's new love interest, Meredith Blake, and remains close with Walter, who told People the two 'talk literally every day.' Walter also keeps in touch with her other castmates, including Lohan. 'Lindsay will DM me on Instagram,' Walter shared. 'I text her father here and there — like, 'Lindsay wanted me to tell you so and so,'' she continued. During the pandemic, Walter even found herself delivering homemade meals to Quaid's house, not unlike Chessy would do for Nick Parker in the film. 'I was cooking for everybody I knew,' she told People. 'I made big pans of food and had them delivered to his house because he had his kids over there.' Walter has since gone on to star in the films Bruce Almighty and Shall We Dance? and has been a cast member on the acclaimed series Abbott Elementary since 2021. Solve the daily Crossword

Lindsay Lohan Wants to Do 'Some More Serious, Dramatic Roles' After ‘Freakier Friday'
Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are back together, 22 years after starring in beloved comedy Freaky Friday. Freakier Friday reunites the duo as mother and daughter Tess and Anna Coleman, who swapped bodies in the original film and, in the sequel, discover that lightning may indeed strike twice. More from The Hollywood Reporter 'Parent Trap' Stars Lindsay Lohan, Lisa Ann Walter, Elaine Hendrix Reunite at 'Freakier Friday' Premiere Joseph Quinn Wants a Marvel Team-Up With Tom Holland: "He's Our Best-Ever Spider-Man" 'The Summer I Turned Pretty' Stars Weigh in on Show's Bullying Ban: "People Can Take It Too Far" At Freakier Friday's L.A. premiere on Tuesday, Lohan told The Hollywood Reporter that the follow-up movie is 'bigger, we have more stories to tell. It's a four-way swap and there's more music and there's a lot more physical comedy than the first one, which I love. Any moment that I can pull a Lucile Ball, I'm down for it.' Lohan and Curtis have remained close friends since they worked together two decades ago, as Lohan explained, 'She was there for me at a time of my life when my mom was busy with my siblings, and she was kind of like another mother figure to me out here in L.A. That's kept us pretty tight-knit over time, and we've always just been in contact.' Curtis added that in working with the 15-year-old Lohan in the first film, 'I said to her from day one, 'I want nothing from you except your own peace and serenity. And I am safe, I'm a home base; I don't want anything, I'm not going to ask you to come to anything.'' She continued, 'I don't want her to feel transactional with me, I want her to feel love.' The film is a return to the big screen for Lohan, who has marked her Hollywood comeback with a series of Netflix films over the past few years. Looking forward, the star said she's 'doing a TV show with Hulu that I'm really excited about and I'd like to take on some more serious, dramatic roles. And I love doing romantic comedy because that's where my home is and I feel like where my fans want to see me, but I'd like to take on some things that are different; maybe find something that's an action-packed film. Just really show people a different side of me.' Also returning for the sequel is love interest Chad Michael Murray, who joked of Curtis and Lohan, 'I'll ride those girls' coattails anytime. I came in, and you never know what to expect, you're sitting there going, 'Oh God, let's not screw it up.' You're going to make a sequel and I hate to say it but it's as good, if not better — they delivered.' Also at the premiere, the film's fictional band Pink Slip surprised guests with a special performance prior to the screening, and Lohan was joined on the carpet by her Parent Trap co-stars Lisa Ann Walter and Elaine Hendrix.
