Two arrested for smuggling over 15 kgs of Opium in water pumps
Muscat: The Directorate General for Combatting Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, in a joint operation with the Directorate General of Customs, has successfully arrested two individuals of Asian nationality for attempting to smuggle over 15 kilograms of opium to a European country. The arrest came after a precise tracking operation on a suspicious shipment of water pumps originating from an Asian country. The drugs were professionally concealed inside the pumps by what is believed to be an international drug gang. The suspects were apprehended while they were in the process of sending the illicit consignment through a shipping company. "Safe Investment Environment" meeting discusses developing business environment in Dhofar
Salalah: An introductory meeting titled "Safe Investment Environment" was held on Monday in the Wilayat of Salalah in Dhofar Governorate. Organised by the Public Prosecution and the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI), the event aimed to enhance the business environment through integrated institutional efforts and to establish principles of transparency and legal compliance. This is meant to contribute to creating a safe and attractive investment environment. The meeting was attended by a number of ministers and officials, members of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Board of Directors, investors, business owners, company representatives, and those interested in legal and economic affairs. Nasr Khamis Al Sawai, the Public Prosecutor, explained that the Public Prosecution seeks to expand its partnership with national institutions to spread legal awareness within the private sector and protect the business environment from any unlawful practices. This, he noted, strengthens justice and enhances economic stability. Faisal Abdullah Al Rowas, Chairman of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Board of Directors, affirmed that the meeting is part of a strategic partnership with the Public Prosecution to enhance a legislative environment that stimulates investment in Oman and supports efforts to attract local and foreign capital. Naif Hamed Fadhil, Head of the Chamber's branch in Dhofar Governorate, pointed out that the meeting serves as a platform for institutional dialogue on ways to develop the investment environment in the governorate. He affirmed that Dhofar is rich with promising potential, making it an attractive destination for investors in various sectors. Assistant Public Prosecutor Khalfan Said Al Maawali presented a working paper that reviewed criminal liability under the Commercial Companies Law, the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Law, and the compliance mechanisms that companies must adhere to. The meeting included a dialogue session with the Public Prosecutor and the Chairman of Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The session addressed key legislative challenges facing the private sector and discussed practical proposals for developing the legal environment and boosting Oman's investment appeal. This meeting is part of a series of initiatives aimed at embedding the principles of governance and transparency and strengthening institutional partnership. This aligns with the aspirations of Oman Vision 2040 to empower the private sector and support the national business environment.
