Developed by the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT), the drone is just 1.3 cm long and weighs less than 0.3 grams. It was unveiled on the Chinese military broadcaster CCTV-7 as part of an exhibit on next-generation robotic systems.
In a demonstration aired over the weekend, NUDT student researcher Liang Hexiang held up the ultra-light robot and said, 'Here in my hand is a mosquito-like type of robot. Miniature bionic robots like this one are especially suited to information reconnaissance and special missions on the battlefield.'
The drone, resembling a real mosquito, is equipped with two leaf-shaped wings, a slender black body, and three fine wire-like legs. It can reportedly operate silently and without radar detection, carrying ultra-miniature cameras and microphones to capture images, sounds, and electronic signals. Its small size makes it ideal for indoor surveillance, even inside secure government or military facilities.

According to The Defense Post, the device's compact build enables it to evade conventional detection systems and operate in confined spaces — a feature that has raised alarms among privacy advocates and military analysts.
Experts warn that such drones could be exploited for espionage, cyber intrusions, or even biological warfare.
'This could mean greater access to restricted areas such as secure government facilities,' noted Sam Bresnick, a research fellow at Georgetown University's Centre for Security and Emerging Technology. 'If China is able to produce mosquito-sized drones, it would likely be interested in using them for various intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance tasks, especially in places that larger drones struggle to access, such as indoor areas.

These drones could be used to track individuals or listen in on conversations.'
Other experts are raising more dystopian concerns. Tracey Follows, a futurist and former Google advisor, told The Sun that such drones could be used for 'untraceable murders' or carry pathogens, referencing a Black Mirror episode in which robotic insects were weaponised for targeted killings. 'In time, one expects a drone to have the situational awareness to carry out an attack autonomously without a human in the loop,' she said.
'The big question is what's the payload on these drones, what are you actually attaching to the drone?'
The mosquito-sized UAV is part of a broader NUDT programme exploring micro-robotics, with parallel developments including artillery-launched drones that can survive the extreme conditions of being fired from 155mm cannon shells. These innovations reflect China's ambition to lead in micro-UAV technology, a field seeing increasing global competition.
Other countries have made strides in this area. Norway's Black Hornet, developed by Teledyne FLIR Defence, is already used by militaries worldwide. The latest version, the Black Hornet 4, won the 2025 Blue UAS Refresh award from the US Department of Defence for advancements in battery life, signal range, and wind resistance. Meanwhile, Harvard University's RoboBee project has demonstrated insect-sized drones that can transition from water to air and even perch on surfaces using static electricity.
Beyond military applications, microdrones are being explored for civilian use in medicine, agriculture, and disaster response. In healthcare, they could enable precision drug delivery or internal imaging. In environmental monitoring, their small size allows access to hazardous zones during floods, fires, or chemical spills.
Still, with their stealth capabilities and growing autonomy, these tiny machines are poised to become one of the most ethically and strategically complex technologies of the decade.

Tesla is expected to report another fall in quarterly deliveries on Wednesday as the backlash against CEO Elon Musk's political views and competitive pressures continue to drag on demand. While much of Tesla's trillion-dollar valuation hangs on Musk's bet on commercializing robotaxis, most of the company's current revenue and profits come from its core business of selling electric vehicles - one that has been under pressure due to high interest rates and rising competition. The global EV market has been growing, albeit at a slower pace than in previous years, but annual sales of Tesla's aging lineup fell for the first time in 2024. While Musk has said sales will return to growth in 2025 - a pullback from his earlier promise of 20-30% growth - analysts expect an 8% sales decline this year. For the second quarter ended June, Tesla is expected to deliver 394,380 units, according to 23 analysts polled by Visible Alpha. That would be a drop of more than 11% year-over-year, and would follow a 13% decline the company reported in the previous quarter. Tesla has said the fall last quarter was due to a pause in production to shift to a refreshed version of its best-selling Model Y SUV, and analysts had said many customers were delaying purchases as they waited for it to roll out. "I think a lot of analysts were thinking this quarter would have a bump positive because of the new Model Y," said Ross Gerber, CEO of Tesla investor Gerber Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management. US defence 'made in China': Is Washington ready for war with Beijing - or too dependent to fight?

A new report from data analytics firm Govini paints a sobering picture of America's war readiness, raising the question: could the US actually sustain a conflict with China, or is it too entangled in its rival's supply chains? The report reveals that Chinese firms supply nearly one in ten critical components for major US defense programs, including missile defense, nuclear systems, and space technology. It highlights how deeply Beijing's industries are woven into America's military supply chains, with particular reliance on Chinese-made parts in missile defense, and on critical minerals dominated by China's production. Chinese parts in US defense According to Govini's National Security Scorecard, released this week, Chinese firms made up 9.3% of primary contractors, known as Tier 1 suppliers, for major US defense programs across nine critical sectors in 2024. These sectors include aviation, maritime, command and control systems, nuclear, missile defense, and space. The report further noted how deeply Chinese suppliers were embedded in vital military supply chains. The missile defense sector, key to protecting the US from attack, had the highest reliance: 11.1% of Tier 1 suppliers were Chinese. Even the nuclear sector, where security stakes are at their highest, counted on Chinese suppliers for 7.8% of its components, more than any other foreign country. 'US not prepared for war with China' 'The United States is not prepared for the war that we may have to enter if China said, 'today is the day',' South China Morning Post quoted Tara Dougherty, Govini's CEO saying. While the dependence is clear, fully eliminating Chinese suppliers is not so simple. Dougherty cautioned against viewing decoupling as a silver bullet. 'I'm not even sure that eradicating China from the supply chain is the right goal,' she said, adding, 'I think it's about dissecting these platforms into what's critical and what's not.' One area of particular concern was critical minerals, as per the report. It noted that hundreds of weapon systems, from jets to ships to missiles, depended on minerals like antimony, gallium, germanium, tungsten and tellurium. China dominates global production of these materials. In fact, Govini found that 78% of US weapon systems could be affected by Chinese export curbs on these minerals. This vulnerability was highlighted by Beijing's recent restrictions on rare earth exports as part of its broader tech and trade tensions with Washington.

Innovation Takes Centre Stage: 95% of Indian Companies Rank It Among Top 3 Priorities
Amid ongoing economic and geopolitical turbulence, a new report from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) reveals that innovation resilience is a defining trait of high-performing firms. The report, titled Most Innovative Companies 2025: In Disruptive Times, the Resilient Win, explores insights from two decades of BCG's innovation research. Based on an analysis of the firms that have appeared on BCG's annual 50 Most Innovative Companies lists since 2005, the report found a strong link between long-term innovation excellence and total shareholder return (TSR). Top innovators outperformed the broader market by 2.4 percentage points annually on average, with particularly strong gains during the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet while innovation has remained a top-three priority for 64% to 83% firms every year, many companies aren't up to the task. From 2021 to 2024, the proportion of executives who said that they see their companies as innovation leaders declined by 24 percentage points. And despite continued high R&D spending, the report found no consistent link between R&D investment and TSR. 'The ability to innovate through adversity is what separates exceptional companies from the rest,' said Justin Manly, a BCG managing director and senior partner and a coauthor of the report. 'R&D spending alone isn't enough. What matters most is investing in the right initiatives and capabilities to turn uncertainty into opportunity.' Asian Innovators Gain Prominence, Europe Falters China & India leads in innovation prioritization with 95% of its respondents' reporting innovation as a top three priority in 2024—the most of any region apart from India, which also came in at 95%. In 2005, no Chinese companies appeared in BCG's top 50 ranking. By 2023, Chinese companies held 8 of the 50 slots (16% of the total list)—including 2 of the top 10. Meanwhile, since 2005, North American companies have seen their share fall from nearly three-quarters of the list to about half, although they still represent two-thirds of all serial innovators—firms that have ranked on the list 10 or more times. In contrast, European companies have had less staying power. European companies typically rank lower on the top 50 list, and Europe also accounts for the highest share of companies that have appeared on the list only once. Compared to other regions, Europe's most innovative companies tend to skew toward industrial sectors such as automotive and pharma, rather than technology. Digital Maturity Defines Today's Innovation Leaders Digital maturity has become table stakes for innovation success. BCG's analysis of corporate earnings call transcripts found that mentions of digital innovation doubled from 2005 to 2024. The 25 serial innovators that have ranked 10+ times in the top 50 referenced digital topics nearly four times as often as their peers did. Nevertheless, digital innovation excellence remains a moving target. In 2024, AI and GenAI captured more than 80% of all venture capital investment. And agentic AI is set to raise the innovation bar again. A New C-Suite Agenda for Innovation As companies face increased geopolitical uncertainty, the report outlines four questions to help business leaders prepare for a potential post-globalization world: Ambition.
