ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mets left fielder Jesse Winker had an MRI on Sunday after leaving the first game of New York's doubleheader at St. Louis with right side discomfort.
Manager Carlos Mendoza said Winker was injured while making a throw in the third inning of the Mets' 6-5 loss.

'On the right side in the oblique area, he got hurt on the throw to home plate,' Mendoza said. 'So, we'll see what we're dealing with here.'
Mendoza acknowledged there's always concern when the word oblique is mentioned.
'When you hear that area, those are tricky,' Mendoza said. 'I don't want to get ahead of myself here.'
The 31-year-old Winker was making his first start in left field this season. He had played just two innings in left this year while serving mainly as a designated hitter.
The Cardinals loaded the bases with one out in the third. Nolan Gorman hit a flyball to Winker, who made the catch and threw home to try and nab Brendan Donovan, who slid in safely before catcher Luis Torrens got the ball. Nolan Arenado was ultimately tagged out in a rundown on the play.

Jeff McNeil moved from second base to replace Winker in left. Luisangel Acuña, who was making his first start at third base, switched to second. Mark Vientos entered to play third and take Winker's spot in the lineup.
Winker had a walk and a sacrifice fly in his two plate appearances. He's hitting .239 this season with one homer and 10 RBIs in 24 games.

Browns CB Martin Emerson Jr. Suffers Achilles Tendon Injury In Practice

Cleveland Browns cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. sustained an Achilles tendon injury in practice Tuesday and could miss the upcoming season. Emerson got hurt while covering a wide receiver during a 7-on-7 drill. He dropped to the ground in pain and screamed before being carted off the field with a towel covering his head. A team spokesman said Emerson, a third-round pick in 2022, will undergo an MRI to confirm the severity of the injury. The team fears he has a rupture, which would end Emerson's season just as it was starting. Before practice, Emerson spoke with reporters and said he was looking forward to bouncing back from a subpar season in 2024. The 24-year-old has 202 tackles, four interceptions, a fumble recovery and sack in three seasons. Emerson didn't have an interception last season and said he battled some unspecified injuries. "As the year went along, my body was just kind of on a downward spiral," he said. "Just had to do some soul searching, man. Pray, stay close to God and just work my tail off. Honestly, that's the only thing that could kind of get me out of that slump, was the work. Put in the work and just come back and be ready." Emerson said he added 6 pounds of muscle to be better prepared to handle the rigors of a 17-game schedule. His likely loss is another blow to a Cleveland defense looking to rebound from a poor season and already short-handed with linebackers Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (neck injury) and Jordan Hicks (retired) ruled out. With Emerson out, Greg Newsome will likely move into the No. 2 corner spot opposite Pro Bowler Denzel Ward. Both Emerson and Newsome also played some nickel back, covering slot receivers. Cameron Mitchell would be the top candidate for full-time nickel duties. Reporting by The Associated Press.

Mets send Huascar Brazoban down to minors with hopes of getting him stretched out

Try it free SAN DIEGO — The Mets sent down a reliever who was tied for the team lead in games pitched. Needing an arm that wasn't weary and eyeing a fresher, more stretched-out version of Huascar Brazobán later in the season, the Mets optioned the righty, who had pitched in more games than every reliever on the team except Reed Garrett. Advertisement Brazobán has been a mainstay for the club all season, although his usage had evolved during the grind of a long season. When the Mets bullpen was at its best in April, Brazobán was a multi-inning weapon who recorded as many as seven outs in an appearance and had thrown 34 pitches in his season debut. In each of the 35-year-old's past 12 games, he did not record more than three outs. Advertisement When Brazobán returns later this summer, the Mets hope they will be bringing up the strong, lengthy reliever they saw in April. 'He's done a lot for us,' manager Carlos Mendoza said before Tuesday's 7-1 loss to the Padres at Petco Park. 'We want to use this time to continue to build him up for a potential role here — because we told him, 'You're going to be back here.'' Brazobán will have a more scripted throwing program with Triple-A Syracuse, stretching out to 'hopefully up to 40 pitches,' Mendoza said. The Mets needed a fresh arm, and Brazobán's was not: He contributed to Monday's fifth-inning implosion and had owned a 10.66 ERA in his past 14 games. Advertisement Mets reliever Huascar Brazobán had owned a 10.66 ERA in his past 14 games. AP Typically when the club has needed a reliever who could be available immediately over the past month, it has designated a pitcher for assignment. This time, as the Mets made room for the recently DFA'd and now re-signed Chris Devenski, Brazobán was sent down and Rico Garcia was retained. Garcia, who has been on and off the roster, has delivered — he entered play without allowing a run in 9 ²/₃ innings with the Mets. He is trying to carve out a more permanent role in the bullpen. Advertisement 'He continues to show us that he can help us,' Mendoza said of the righty. In each of Huascar Brazobán's past 12 games, he did not record more than three outs. AP Jesse Winker (back inflammation) is not close to a return. Placed on the injured list on July 11, Winker is 'not doing much,' Mendoza said, and is at least a few days away from resuming baseball activities. The Mets are still confident Winker will return at some point this season. 'That's what the trainers are telling us,' Mendoza said. 'We just got to wait.' Advertisement For the first time all season, Jeff McNeil, who went 1-for-4, started a third straight game in center field. The Mets had shown more caution earlier this season with a natural infielder whose legs they want to keep fresh. He's doing a good job of just kind of monitoring that workload.' Tylor Megill (right elbow sprain) is set to throw a bullpen session that approximates multiple 'innings' on Wednesday, Mendoza said. If all goes well, the righty then would begin facing hitters.
