Connections of White Birch elect to play it safe and swerve Eclipse

John Joseph Murphy's star performer was one of 11 confirmed for the Esher track's summer highlight on Monday, but connections have now decided not to make the trip from Ireland while the weather refuses to break.
'White Birch is not going to run, it's looking like they will have proper good to firm ground at Sandown,' said George Murphy, who is assistant to his father.
'We made the decision good ground would be the quickest we would run him on, so it's not ideal for Saturday.'
White Birch made a pleasing start to the season by finishing second to Los Angeles in the Mooresbridge Stakes before an unlucky fourth to the same rival when defending his Tattersalls Gold Cup crown.
However, he also missed Royal Ascot for the second year running when quick conditions ruled him out of the Prince of Wales's Stakes, connections are now minded to hit the pause button ahead of a late-season campaign on more suitable going.
Murphy added: 'We'll chat to the owners but it is more than likely we will give him an easy time now and wait for the end of the summer/start of autumn when we're more likely to get a little ease in the ground.
'It's been pretty quick for a while now, but he's in good shape and we just want to look after him.'

Alex Bregman, Red Sox take down Dodgers to win series

July 27 - Alex Bregman hammered a go-ahead two-run homer to help the Boston Red Sox defeat the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 Sunday. Bregman's 13th home run of the year came against Los Angeles starting pitcher Dustin May to conclude a three-run fifth inning. Michael Conforto had three hits -- a solo home run and two doubles -- for the Dodgers, who also received two hits from Shohei Ohtani. The Red Sox prevailed twice in the three-game series. Los Angeles won 5-2 Friday, and Boston earned a 4-2 victory Saturday. Boston starter Walker Buehler pitched against the Dodgers -- his former team -- for the first time in his career, and was pulled with two outs in the fifth. Buehler gave up three runs on four hits, struck out four and walked five. Brennan Bernardino (4-2) earned the win for recording the final out of the fifth. Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman left the game with one out in the eighth. He threw 11 pitches in the inning and walked two. Jordan Hicks got the final five outs for Boston for his second save. May (6-7) pitched the first five innings for Los Angeles. He surrendered four runs on five hits and struck out five without a walk. The Red Sox grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Roman Anthony was hit by a pitch, took third on Jarren Duran's single and scored on Trevor Story's sacrifice fly to center field. It was the second time the Red Sox have scored first in their nine games since the All-Star break. Los Angeles made it a 1-1 game in the third. Miguel Rojas scored when Freddie Freeman drew a bases-loaded walk against Buehler. The Dodgers led 2-1 after Conforto homered against Buehler leading off the fourth, and Mookie Betts drove in Rojas from second with an RBI single to make it 3-1 later in the inning. Boston regained the lead by scoring three times in the fifth. It was 3-2 after Roman Anthony hit an RBI triple that drove in Abraham Toro, and Bregman followed with his two-run home run that put Boston in front. --Field Level Media

Dodgers activate RHP Blake Treinen from injured list

July 27 - The Los Angeles Dodgers activated reliever Blake Treinen from the 60-day injured list on Sunday. The 37-year-old right-hander has been out since mid-April with right forearm tightness. He was 0-2 with a 3.38 ERA and two saves in eight appearances before the injury. Treinen made the All-Star team with the then-Oakland Athletics in 2018 and won World Series championships with the Dodgers in 2020 and 2024. He is 43-36 with a 2.79 ERA and 82 saves in 507 career games (seven starts) with the Washington Nationals (2014-17), Athletics (2017-19) and Dodgers. Treinen missed the 2023 season following shoulder surgery. The Dodgers also recalled southpaw Justin Wrobleski and optioned right-handers Will Klein and Edgardo Henriquez to Triple-A Oklahoma City. --Field Level Media

Tornado goes down a storm in Munich

Having been sent across Europe in pursuit of top-level success, in a race Bin Suroor and Murphy won with Benbatl in 2018, Tornado Alert was never too far off the pace and quickened up smartly to lead halfway up the home straight. Map Of Stars, bidding to provide his trainer Francis-Henri Graffard with a second Group One success in as many days following Calandagan's triumph in the King George at Ascot on Saturday, came from further back to throw down his challenge under James Doyle in the Wathnan Racing silks. But try as he might he could not get on terms with Tornado Alert, who was ultimately well on top at the line. Bin Suroor said: 'He won well, the ground was heavy and he's never run before on this ground, but he handled it well. 'I said to Oisin before the race 'just keep him happy and give him a chance', but he was travelling good all the way and when he came off the bridle he saw it out well.' Tornado Alert holds big-race entries in the Juddmonte International at York and the Celebration Mile at Goodwood next month, but Bin Suroor is in no rush to firm up future plans, adding: 'We'll see how he comes back after the race and then we'll make a decision. 'He's a horse who is improving all the time. He ran well at Royal Ascot, his form is very good and he has improved every time he has run. 'Physically he looks better now than when he finished fourth in the Guineas, but with time and age that is what you would expect. 'He has plenty of speed, but I think a mile and a quarter is his best trip at the moment.'
