Aussie surge nets five-year first
Four female players are now inside the top 100, a feat not achieved since 2019.
Teen star Maya Joint and Ajla Tomljanovic surged inside the top 100 after making the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively at WTA events in North America, doubling Australia's representation inside the elite bracket.
Tomljanovic jumped 18 spots to get back inside the top 100, while Joint, 18, broke through for the first time and is one of only two teenagers in the top 100.
The pair joined Kimberly Birrell and Olivia Gadecki, giving Australia four top-100 women for the first time since October 2019.
Daria Saville was only a set win away from making it five women in the top 100 for the first time since May 2019.
Tomljanovic and Saville reached the semi-finals in Austin and Merida, marking the first time in seven years Australia had two WTA-level semi-finalists in the same week.
The last time was when Saville and three-time grand slam winner Ash Barty reached the 2018 Sydney International semi-finals.
The surge comes ahead of Australia's Billie Jean King Cup round-robin clash against Kazakhstan and Colombia in Brisbane and gives team captain Sam Stosur a range of in-form players to choose from.
The tie will be played over three days and could include Joint, who was born in Michigan in the US to an Australian father, for the first time.
Having peaked at a career-high ranking of six earlier this year, Alex de Minaur has slipped back to 10th but still sits as Australia's highest-ranked male, with another eight compatriots inside the top 100.

Rybakina outlasts Yastremska to reach WTA Montreal quarter-finals
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina beat Dayana Yastremska 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 on Saturday to book a quarter-final clash with Marta Kostyuk at the WTA Canadian Open in Montreal. Kazakhstan's Rybakina, the 2022 Wimbledon champion who won her first title in more than a year at Strasbourg in May, was slowed by nine double faults. But she ultimately had enough to get past Ukraine's Yastremska -- who was coming off a straight-sets victory over eighth-seeded American Emma Navarro. Yastremska fell behind an early break in the first set, but took advantage of Rybakina's early serving woes to break back, and broke again to take the opening set in a game that Rybakina had led 40-0. Rybakina, seeded ninth, bore down after that, breaking Yastremska twice to take the second set. Another untimely double fault cost her a break in the third, but she broke Yastremska for the second time in the set to take a 6-5 lead and held on to seal it on her fourth match point with a high backhand volley winner. She'll face another Ukrainian in Kostyuk, who came from behind to beat American McCartney Kessler 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Kostyuk reached the quarter-finals of WTA-1000 events at Qatar and Madrid this year, but she arrived in Montreal having not won a match since reaching the fourth round in Rome. "I hadn't won a match in three months before this tournament -- I didn't have a lot of confidence coming into it," she admitted, thanking her team for "sticking with me". Top-seeded American Coco Gauff headlined the night session, taking on 18-year-old Canadian wild card Victoria Mboko. Gauff, the reigning French Open champion, has been erratic in clawing her way into the fourth round with a pair of three-set victories and will be looking to step it up against the home hope, who has thrilled fans in her first main draw appearance in the event. Mboko is in the round of 16 in a 1000-level event for the first time. She took Gauff to three sets on the clay courts of Rome earlier this year and said she was "really excited" for another shot at the American. "She's the number one seed of this tournament," Mboko said. "I'm going to really expect a hard fight. It's always great to play such incredible athletes and incredible players like her." The winner of that match will play either China's Zhu Lin or Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who are both seeking to reach the quarters of a 1000 level event for the first time. Ukraine's Kostyuk through to quarterfinals of women's National Bank Open in Montreal
MONTREAL - Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine has advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's National Bank Open in Montreal with a three-set victory over McCartney Kessler of the United States. The 23-year-old Kostyuk recovered from a first-set loss to defeat Kessler 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth round at IGA Stadium. Kostyuk, the 24th seed, will meet the winner of a match between her countrywoman Dayana Yastremska and ninth seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan. But the buzz in Montreal was for a later feature match between Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko and top seed Coco Gauff of the United States. The 18-year-old Mboko from Toronto is the lone Canadian singles player still competing in the event. The match will be played on centre court. Ferrand-Prévôt takes lead at women's Tour de France after commanding stage win
SAINT-FRANCOIS-LONGCHAMP, France — French rider Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt took a commanding lead at the women's Tour de France after launching a solo attack on the final climb of Saturday's penultimate stage. She is making her Tour debut at 33 years old and leads Australian rider Sarah Gigante by 2 minutes, 37 seconds and 2023 champion Demi Vollering of the Netherlands by 3:18 heading into Sunday's last stage. Last year's event had the smallest winning margin in the history of the women's and men's races, but Ferrand-Prévôt looks like winning far more comfortably, barring mishap. She won the mountain bike gold medal at last year's Paris Olympics and the Paris-Roubaix classic in April. Overnight, she trailed Mauritian rider Kim Le Court by 26 seconds heading into stage 8 from Chambéry to Saint-François-Longchamp, which took the riders on a 112-kilometer (69-mile) trek into the mountains. It featured an early climb of 13 kilometers (8 miles) up Col de Plainpalais before finishing with a tortuous ascent of 18.6 kilometers to Col de Madeleine, one of the most famed climbs in cycling. Ferrand-Prévôt made a move on her main rivals about 9 kms from the top, pulling away to chase after Niamh Fisher-Black and Yara Kastelijn ahead of her. She soon caught them and then rode unchallenged to clinch the stage win. Gigante crossed the line 1:45 behind her, while Fisher-Black rolled in 2:15 behind in third spot. Vollering placed fourth. Sunday's ninth and final stage from Praz-sur-Arly to Châtel is another mountainous route, with three big climbs, and is even longer at 124 kms.
