
A Former Church Garage Gives Way to a Wine and Cocktail Bar in Detroit's East Village
The garage doors of the former church garage-turned-bar officially reopened to the public on Saturday, June 7. Father Forgive Me, a new cocktail and wine bar from the hospitality group behind Standby, Deluxx Fluxx, and the Skip, is located in the former garage of the Shepherd Detroit. The bar is part of the Library Street Collective's Little Village campus, which spans 3.5 acres in Detroit's East Village neighborhood. The campus also includes the Shepherd, Charles McGee Legacy Park, a skate park designed by artist McArthur Binion and skating legend (and sometimes Detroiter) Tony Hawk, a bed and breakfast called ALEO (named for the angel, lion, eagle and ox depicted in Pewabic tiles on the former church's altar) and the Lantern building, a redevelopment down the street that also houses the relocated Cøllect beer bar.
The Romanesque-style church dates back to 1911 and was in operation until 2016, meaning the property was in relatively good condition when acquired by Library Street Collective founders Anthony and JJ Curis. Architecture firm Peterson Rich Office and Holly Jonsson Studio redesigned the space.
Walking up the gravel entrance to the campus, guests are guided to an outdoor patio that wraps around Father Forgive Me, with a variety of relaxed seating options, including benches made from local white oak trees surrounding a fire pit. Inside, the oak bar and custom millwork done by Surfing Cowboy Studio glow under daylight and transition to the soft hue of small oil lamps as evening approaches. Full table service is available in the bar's outdoor and indoor spaces, and on busier days, a horse trailer near the back of the building opens to serve draft wine and cocktails for guests looking to roam the gravel and grass areas with drinks in hand. However, alcohol is not permitted at the adjoining skate park.
Directly across from the Shepherd and Father Forgive Me, two residential homes have been transformed into commercial spaces by Detroit-based design firm Undecorated. One will soon house the new location of Warda Pâtisserie, run by James Beard Award-winning chef Warda Bouguettaya. Warda is also behind some of the bar snacks at Father Forgive Me. The snacks menu at the bar includes a twisty French pastry called sacristan (which literally means a person in charge of church ceremonial equipment — a subtle wink to the location), sliced Mother Loaf baguette topped with Brie, ham, and jams, and a mortadella sandwich made on crispy, salty focaccia from Rising Stars Academy.
Bartender and owner Joe Robinson's a little rusty when it comes to wines, having spent most of his career in the cocktail world, which is why he brought in beverage director Dan Reinisch, previously of SheWolf Pastificio & Bar, to lead the wine program. Wines will rotate, but right now the prices range from $12 to $15 by the glass and $45 to $125 by the bottle, with offerings from Italy, Croatia, California, Portugal, Germany, Oregon, and France.
'I love a lot of the super classic, more buttoned-up, structured wines — the ones where the tannins and acid have punch and purpose alongside food,' Reinisch says. 'But these are all meant to be drinkable on their own, and obviously they pair with food, but there's an important kind of yumminess that needs to exist with them on their own.' He continues: 'We're aiming for approachable flavors that might come from a place you've never heard of, or be made from a grape you can't pronounce, but when it hits your nose and palate, it should still feel comfortable.'
General Manager Ryan Sparks, formerly Supergeil and Two James, and Robinson have been working on a cocktail menu that shares an ethos with the artwork, as well as throughout the grounds of the Shepherd. The beverages are meant to hit all of the notes for everyone with prices ranging from $12 to $16 and flavors from sweet and refreshing to spirit-forward. Each drink highlights an interesting component that invokes conversation; for the Magnolia Martini, all the blooms come from Sparks' backyard magnolia tree and are pickled to produce vinegar he made for the martini.
The cocktail and wine bar is a hyperlocal hub powered by a crew of beverage nerds who live and breathe cocktails, wine, food, and craft. The experience begins close and personal like being let in on a secret. But when those good Detroit summer days hit, the energy spills out across the grounds of the Shepherd, weaving through the art-filled halls and garden, open-air walkways, and gathering spots across the campus.
'Some drinks also highlight local, in-season produce — like our rhubarb milk punch, made with rhubarb from Joe at Lone Light Spirits in Ferndale. We're working with local makers and artisans whenever we can,' Sparks says.
In addition to cocktails, the bar team at Father Forgive Me is also offering seven to 10 nonalcoholic drinks, including a rosé that's served on draft and utilizes watermelon rinds, over-steeped tea, and a centrifuged strawberry broth.
'It's important to me, I'm almost three years alcohol-free, which as a bar manager is an interesting place to be,' Sparks adds. 'I'll still taste spirits and I love the educational aspect, but I also love doing this job, and I want to do it for a long time.'
Father Forgive Me is located at 1265 Parkview St. in Detroit , open 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 4 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Friday; noon to 12:30 a.m. Saturday; and noon to 11 p.m. Sunday.

I Tried $802 of YSL Beauty Products & Here's What's Worth Buying

For me, I think of Touche Éclat concealer and Dua Lipa. For others, you may simply know the three iconic initials as an iconic French fashion house. All of these things are true, but during a recent trip with the brand to Marrakech (a home and huge source of inspiration to the brand's founder, Algerian-born Yves Saint Laurent), I discovered that there was so much to YSL Beauty that meets the eye. And not to mention, some seriously excellent products to boot. Over four days, I got the chance to visit Morocco's Ourika Gardens, where YSL Beauty grows botanical ingredients for its suite of makeup, skincare products, and fragrances. (I'll never forget hand-picking jasmine flowers that would end up in bottles of Libre perfume.) It's as good a crash course as I could've dreamed of, and along the way, I tested out hundreds of dollars' worth of product to determine which are the most exciting, covetable ones to try this year. Loveshine Plumping Lip Oil Gloss, $72 In a crowded landscape of lip gloss-treatment hybrids, YSL Beauty's Loveshine is a standout. The shades are curated and truly unique — my two favourites are California Sunshine, a shimmery cinnamon, and Thunder Stealer, a sparkly frosted lavender that feels like it's from the future. In addition to a kiss of colour, the formula has ginger and pepper oils to boost circulation and naturally plump lips. Make Me Blush Powder Blush, $98 These adorable powder blushes remind me of French macarons — colourful, cute, and utterly irresistible. Available in both matte and satin finishes, these silky powder blushes are intensely pigmented and have pretty impressive staying power. (They held up all day, even on the hottest days walking around Marrakech.) My favourites of the bunch are Peachy Nude and Berry Bang, but to be honest, there's not a blah shade in the bunch. Candy Glaze Lip Gloss Stick, $72 Lip gloss in a stick? Genius, if you ask me. It's easier to apply without a mirror, less prone to getting everywhere, and when the packaging is this good, what's not to love? I love to wear this with a lip pencil for an easy, effortless lip combo. You can also wear it alone for a barely-there hint of hydrating colour. Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara, $70 I'm pretty picky with my mascara. I like my lashes to look effortlessly fluttery and defined, even when I do a more bold, voluminous lash look. I'm wearing YSL Beauty's Lash Clash mascara here, and as you can see, it's all about flirty, look-at-me lashes without any heaviness or clumps. YSL Beauty's Global Makeup Artist Sam Visser gave me a life-changing tip for applying lots of mascara: Wipe off any excess from the wand before applying it to your lashes, which gives you more control over building up coats as needed. Couture Mini Clutch Eyeshadow Palette, $130 These compact eyeshadow quads are high fashion, but for your eyes. There are two new palettes to look forward to this year, Captivating Dunes and Sunrise Safari, and the former has become my current obsession. It's the perfect mix of earthy, cool-toned neutrals that are super elevated. I like to apply a wash of champagne shimmer all over my lid, and then define the crease with the medium taupe. For date night, I turn it into a smoky eye with the dark chocolate matte along the upper and lower lash lines. The powders are silky and soft to wear — never chalky — and are actually infused with fig cactus oil from the Ourika Gardens that I toured. Loveshine Candy Glow Balm, $70 Yes, it's a lip balm — but a really, really nice one. Like, the nicest I own. I love the shade 8B (a warm rose) to prep my lips while I do the rest of my makeup. It's silky and hydrating, but not too heavy. I will be honest, the tint on this is quite sheer; but that isn't a dealbreaker for me since I'm not a huge lipstick person anyway. The packaging is also stunning, and looks like something Marie Antoinette would've kept in her vanity. Libre Eau De Parfum, $290 (90ml) I'm not normally a floral perfume girlie but Libre's gorgeous mix of orange blossom, jasmine, lavender, and musk is like a warm, sensual embrace in olfactive form. According to perfumers Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaim, Libre was born from the idea of starting with a fougère — a traditionally masculine structure within fragrance — and adding feminine, floral notes for a juxtaposition. Eagle-eyed buyer snaps up £30k Dalí painting for £150 at house clearance sale
A Salvador Dalí painting, initially acquired for a mere £150 at a house clearance sale, has been authenticated as an original and is now valued at up to £30,000. The mixed media piece was purchased by an anonymous art dealer. They later discovered it had been previously offered for sale at Sotheby's in the 1990s, fully attributed to Dalí. The artwork is set to be auctioned by Cambridgeshire auctioneers Cheffins on 23 October. Gabrielle Downie, an associate at Cheffins, said the loss of an attribution is 'quite rare in the modern art world', making it a 'significant' rediscovery. 'To handle a genuine rediscovery of a work by who is easily one of the most famous artists in the world, and the godfather of Surrealism, is a real honour.' Having the painting authenticated again was an 'exciting process', she said. 'It is a testament to the sellers' significant art knowledge that he was able to spot this picture at a house clearance sale. 'While Dalí's work is often some of the most recognisable, this is an unusual piece which shows a different side to his practice when working in watercolour.' The artwork, titled Vecchio Sultano, was discovered in a Cambridge-based house clearance sale in 2023. It has been certified as authentic by Dalí expert Nicolas Descharnes and has a pre-sale estimate of £20,000 to £30,000. The image, made with watercolour paint and felt tip, measures 38cm by 29cm. It is an illustration of a scene from The Arabian Nights, a series of 500 pieces which Dali intended to create of Middle Eastern folktales, which was commissioned by wealthy Italian couple Giuseppe and Mara Albaretto. Ms Downie said: 'The Albarettos who commissioned this work had initially asked Dalí to illustrate a bible in 1963, but upon Dalí's insistence, he instead ended up illustrating scenes from 1,001 Nights – a collection of Middle Eastern folktales. 'It seems Dalí was fascinated with Moorish culture and believed himself to be from a Moorish line. 'It seems that this project was abandoned, with Dalí only having completed 100 of the intended 500 works. 'Of these 100, half remained with the publishing house Rizzoli and were either damaged or lost; the other 50 stayed with the Albarettos and were later inherited by their daughter, Christina, who was also Dalí's goddaughter. 'It is the 50 that were retained by the family that were published in 2016 by the Folio Society. 'I think, given that Dalí engineered the commission to suit his whims, that he very much enjoyed this project and the subject matter. 'It is most likely that the work in question came from the batch of 50 which were retained and later lost by the publishers.'
