
Concur survey: Companies are cutting back on perks but not all corporate travel
The survey -- which included responses from 700 travel managers across seven business markets, 3,750 business travelers across 24 markets and 600 CFOs across six markets -- was fielded from April 30 through May 12, which Concur noted was "during a period of high uncertainty associated with global trade." Even so, 93% of travel managers, 90% of CEOs and 89% of travelers said their company had no plans to cut travel budgets.
Across all respondent types, about 60% said their company typically makes travel budget cuts in the form of "small changes to all trips" rather than wider policy changes, and 87% of business travelers said they had seen such cuts over the previous 12 months, according to Concur. The most frequently cited cuts in the survey were on extra overnight stays to prevent long travel days and use of premium air classes, each cited by 30% of travelers, and non-client-facing travel, cited by 28% of travelers.
Amid those cutbacks, 85% of business travelers said they would pay out of their own pockets to add additional perks to business travel, the survey indicated. Among the most frequent items travelers were willing to take on as personal expenses included: accommodation upgrades (38% of travelers), adding hotel nights to avoid long travel days (35%) and premium seating (30%).
That willingness varied by region, with 99% of respondents from India and 91% from the United States saying they would pay their own money to improve their business travel experience, compared with 66% of travelers from France and 73% of travelers from Japan. Younger travelers also were more likely to spend their own money on business travel, with 93% of Gen Z travelers indicating they would do some compared with 62% of baby boomers.
In addition, the survey indicated that many company travel budgets are "insufficient," according to Concur. More than 80% of CFOs said company budget limitations prevent employees from traveling as much as they need to efficiently perform their jobs, and 69% of travel managers said their company travel budget didn't reflect the importance of business travel.
Business travelers, meanwhile, were nearly unanimous in their willingness to travel, with 97% saying they were at least somewhat willing to travel over the next year, and 94% said business travel was essential to their role. Only about half of surveyed travelers thought their current frequency of travel was about right, with 30% saying they are traveling too much and 19% saying they are not traveling enough.

'Bitcoin Is Bad For Dictators?' Why Human Rights Foundation Strategist Says Bitcoin Is 'Freedom Money'

But for millions of people living in unstable economies and oppressive regimes, the asset offers a rare escape hatch, says Human Rights Foundation strategy chief Alex Gladstein. Goldstein said Bitcoin is 'a very powerful human rights tool' at the 2025 Bitcoin Policy Summit on Monday. For one, Goldstein said Bitcoin provided an avenue for many to escape hyperinflation or even just basic inflation. He said that while citizens of developed societies could save in stocks and bonds to escape inflation, most of the world did not have that privilege. Gladstein also discussed Bitcoin's potential to help individuals evade financial surveillance and censorship if used right, citing the increased weaponization of the financial system by autocratic and even some democratic leaders against opponents and activists. 'With Bitcoin, the ability of these leaders to do these things is completely decimated,' he said. 'So it's so much harder for governments to track people if they use Bitcoin the right way, without linking their ID to it. Gladstein said that Bitcoin has been solving these problems for activists since at least 2013, citing the protests against then-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych's government. He said the Human Rights Foundation was able to support protester with Bitcoin after their bank accounts were frozen. Gladstein anticipates that the adoption of Bitcoin by activists globally will only continue to grow with time, citing similar occurrences in Russia, Nigeria and Belarus in recent years. 'The things that these people are doing with Bitcoin, it's impossible to use US dollars,' he said. 'Technologically, they just don't work.' Gladstein said all these made Bitcoin 'freedom money,' adding, 'Bitcoin is bad for dictators.''I'll admit to you, as a longtime human rights activist, that a lot of the activism is virtue signaling,' he said. 'But if you can teach somebody how to use Bitcoin and achieve property rights and financial freedom and free speech for themselves and for their family, for their communities, man, that's real impact.' The Human Rights Foundation has raised over $6 million to support human rights work, boasting over 75 creative and tech partnerships with activists, the non-profit's website says at last look. The organization also boasts a Bitcoin Development Fund that supports individuals and projects that make tools for Bitcoin and other 'freedom technologies' that help activists in challenging environments. Human Rights Foundation said it gave out 800 million satoshis or 8 BTC to 22 'freedom tech projects' across Africa, Asia and Latin America in May. I Want AI In My Business In The Best Way
typing on laptop It's exciting times, and challenging times, for business. Everyone from the C suite on down is scrambling to figure out how to use brand new tools and ideas to their advantage. For the rank and file, people below management level, the imperative is to justify their own work, by learning how AI applies to any given role (I cite Toby Lutke's Shopify memo). Managers and leaders, on the other hand, have a slightly different goal – they have to figure out how to use AI to the benefit of the organization as a whole. So how do you get confidence for, as a fortune cookie might say, these uncertain times? Researching AI One way to start is to learn about the technology in general, to start becoming knowledgeable on what the LLMs do, and why. Just for example: I came across this list from Codemotion of common algorithm components and stochastic ideas using in AI/ML: Now, if you're in a leadership role practically, it's to your benefit to know and understand these terms. They represent a short survey of how we started using AI for things like restaurant recommendations, analysis of performance reviews, and decision support. In other words, if you can explain each of these types of machine learning mechanisms, you're closer to the top of the pile when it comes to brainstorming on AI. Tips from LLM Engines What do MS Copilot and ChatGPT have to say about the issue? After all, you're trying to understand them, in a way. I got this by asking Copilot to enumerate some tips for better AI adoption: (For sourcing, Copilot cited Codemotion and analyticsinsight, along with giants Microsoft and IBM, and our own work at Forbes.) I'll leave it up to you, the reader, to decide if these recommendations are overly generic or not. More on AI Adoption Then there's this panel discussion from IIA, moderated by Paul Baier of GAI Insights. '(You should have) practical applications of evolving technology, but also have dedicated focus on your own plan execution,' said panelist Venkat Vedam. '(You should have) use cases and business cases mapped out … this year, next year, but at the same time, we don't want to lose on the skills gaps.' The panel also discussed shadow IT, where employees may be using tools not explicitly endorsed by the organization. 'I feel like shadow IT is not a problem,' Vedam said. 'It's more of an opportunity … the reason shadow IT exists is because the employees are not getting the tools they need … it's also manifesting in a slightly more structured fashion.' He explained. 'There's a bunch of engineers and developers who are servicing a small set of users that are not technically part of the technology organization,' he said. 'The reason why the shadow IT works is (that) the people who are implementing those tools know the business problems well, and have the flexibility to adopt new technologies. (The goal is) to build an operating model around it … (and) to have a governance process to take what works in the shadow IT and make it real.' 'With everything changing so fast, I think it's hard to (have shadow IT because) your organization doesn't really want that so much anymore,' said panelist Joan LaRovere. 'What is the problem you're trying to solve? And … do we need to think about other vendors or internal builds? … you (should) know what you need in your tech stack to actually solve the problems your organization needs to solve, and you need that oversight.' 'I think what you're trading off against is security,' added panelist Tomas Reimers. 'And so if your employees are bringing in tools that have access to customer data or personal health information, that's bad. If they're using AI tools to make restaurant reservations for a meeting they have at noon, it probably doesn't matter.' The Spread of Information Later, Reimers talked about observing tech processes and interactions to get a better bird's eye view of what's happening. 'One of my favorite graphs we have in the office is, whenever we go into an organization, we can actually map the social network of developers that talk to each other, one of the artifacts of working in development. And then you can see where it's adopted. And it always looks like it starts at a node and it spreads out from there.' LaRovere mentioned the value of broader collaboration, which is another point that resonates with me in terms of offering part of a road map. 'I think one of the best things … is bringing people together and sharing either what they've done, showcasing what they've done, testing different things, creating that, what we call a learning community,' she said. Your Own Business Case I'll end with this: part of what I've learned over several decades of being around technology is that most new tools can either help or hinder a business (if you've read a good number of these blogs, you may have read this already) in terms of practical integration. There's usually a learning curve. If you don't prepare staff, you could be in for a lot of trouble. And then there's fitting your applications to your business need, which is not a one-size-fits-all or cookie-cutter type of thing. But maybe this set of tips, from people, the web, and LLMs, is a good start.
