Kaouther Ben Hania and Oscar-winning producers on board to direct film on killing of Palestinian girl

LONDON: Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania will direct a new feature dramatizing the death of Hind Rajab, the five-year-old Palestinian girl killed in Gaza earlier this year, a Variety report said on Wednesday.

The project, which is currently untitled, is set to be shot in Tunisia and produced by Nadim Cheikhrouha ('Four Daughters'), alongside Oscar-winning producers Odessa Rae ('Navalny') and James Wilson ('The Zone of Interest'), with backing from Film4.
Hind Rajab's death became a global symbol of the humanitarian toll of Israel's military campaign in Gaza following the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attacks.
She was one of thousands of children killed in the conflict, but her story sparked particular international outrage. In one notable protest, student demonstrators at Columbia University renamed occupied buildings in her honor.
Rajab was fleeing Gaza City with members of her family on Jan. 29, 2024, when their car came under Israeli fire, killing her uncle, aunt and three cousins.
Hind was left trapped in the vehicle for hours, speaking with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society by phone as paramedics attempted to reach her.
On Feb. 10, after Israeli forces withdrew from the area, rescuers found the bodies of Hind, the paramedics and the family still inside the vehicle.
Israel initially denied responsibility, but investigations by The Washington Post, Sky News and the research agency, Forensic Architecture, later concluded that Israeli tanks were in the vicinity and had likely fired at the car.
The same investigations indicated an Israeli tank had also targeted the ambulance sent to rescue her.
Ben Hania, one of the Arab world's most acclaimed filmmakers, has received multiple Academy Award nominations.
Her 2017 feature, 'Beauty and the Dogs,' was Tunisia's Oscar submission, while 'The Man Who Sold His Skin' (2020) was nominated for best international feature.
Her latest film, 'Four Daughters,' was nominated for best documentary feature at the 2024 Oscars.

Saudi Arabia condemns Israeli violence against Palestinian civilians in West Bank, Gaza

Saudi Arabia issued a statement Friday condemning violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers and soldiers against the Palestinian civilian population in Gaza and the West Bank. The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the Kingdom's 'condemnation and denunciation of the continued violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers, under the protection of the occupation forces, against Palestinian civilians, including the attacks in the village of Kafr Malik, east of Ramallah.' Saudi Arabia also reiterated its 'condemnation of the continued Israeli violence against unarmed civilians in Gaza, including the targeting of civilian sites housing displaced persons,' the statement added. It called on the international community to help end 'Israeli violations of international laws and norms.' At least four people were killed in two separate incidents in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, according to the Palestinian health ministry, including a 15-year-old boy who it said was shot by Israeli troops. The teenager was reportedly killed in the northern West Bank town of al-Yamoun, while three other people died in a separate clash in the southern village of Kafr Malik.

GCC Denounces Attacks by Israeli Settlers on Defenseless Palestinians

Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi has expressed his strongest condemnation and denunciation of ongoing attacks launched by Israeli settlers, under the cover of Israeli occupation forces, against the defenseless Palestinian people, the latest of which were the heinous attacks that affected the village of Kafr Malik, east of Ramallah. The secretary-general stressed on Friday that these repeated violations represent a dangerous escalation and a flagrant breach of international and humanitarian laws and are part of a systematic policy aimed at undermining the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and imposing a de facto reality by force. Albudaiwi renewed his call to the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to assume its legal and humanitarian responsibilities, to act urgently to put an end to these violations, to provide the necessary international protection for the Palestinian people, and to support all efforts aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive peace, in line with resolutions of international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.

Saudi Arabia condemns Israeli settler violence against Palestinians in occupied West Bank

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Friday condemned violent attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian civilians in villages in the occupied West Bank. Dozens of settlers attacked the village of Kafr Malik near Ramallah on Wednesday. Three Palestinians were killed by Israeli security forces and seven wounded in the violence, Palestinian health officials said. Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry said the Kingdom condemned and denunciated 'the continued violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers, under the protection of the occupation forces, against Palestinian civilians, including the attacks in the village of Kafr Malik.' Since the war started in Gaza in October 2023, killing more than 55,000 people there, violence against Palestinians in the West Bank has also increased. At least 900 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the territory in the same period and attacks by Israeli settlers have ramped up. The ministry statement reiterated Saudi Arabia's condemnation of Israeli violence against unarmed civilians in Gaza, 'including the targeting of civilian sites housing displaced persons.' The Kingdom called for Palestinian civilians to be protected and for the international community to put an end to 'Israeli violations of international laws and norms.'
