Sapient Intelligence Open-Sources Hierarchical Reasoning Model, a Brain-Inspired Architecture That Solves Complex Reasoning Tasks With 27 Million Parameters

A 27 M-parameter, brain-inspired architecture cracks ARC-AGI, Sudoku-Extreme, and Maze-Hard with just 1000 training examples and without pre-training
Singapore - 21 July, 2025 - AGI Research Company Sapient Intelligence today announced the open-source release of its Hierarchical Reasoning Model (HRM), a brain-inspired architecture that leverages hierarchical structure and multi-timescale processing to achieve substantial computational depth without sacrificing training stability or efficiency. Trained on just 1000 examples without pre-training, with only 27 million parameters, HRM successfully tackles reasoning challenges that continue to frustrate today's large language models (LLMs).
Beyond LLMs' Reasoning Limits
Current LLMs depend heavily on Chain-of-Thought prompting, an approach that often suffers from brittle task decomposition, immense training data demands and high latency. Inspired by the hierarchical and multi-timescale processing in the human brain, HRM overcomes these constraints by embracing three fundamental principles observed in cortical computation: hierarchical processing, temporal separation, and recurrent connectivity. Composed of a high-level module performing slow, abstract planning and a low-level module executing rapid, detailed computations, HRM is capable of alternating dynamically between automatic thinking ('System 1') and deliberate reasoning ('System 2') in a single forward pass.
'AGI is really about giving machines human-level, and eventually beyond-human, intelligence. CoT lets the models imitate human reasoning by playing the odds, and it's only a workaround. At Sapient, we're starting from scratch with a brain-inspired architecture, because nature has already spent billions of years perfecting it. Our model actually thinks and reasons like a person, not just crunches probabilities to ace benchmarks. We believe it will reach, then surpass, human intelligence, and that's when the AGI conversation gets real,' said Guan Wang, founder and CEO of Sapient Intelligence.
Inspired by the brain, HRM has two recurrent networks operating at different timescales to collaboratively solve tasks
Benchmark Breakthroughs
Despite its compact scale of 27 million parameters and using only 1000 input-output examples, all without any pre-training or Chain-of-Thought supervision, HRM learns to solve problems that even the most advanced LLMs struggle with. In the Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus (ARC) AGI Challenge, a widely accepted benchmark of inductive reasoning, HRM archives a performance of 5% on ARC-AGI-2, significantly outperforming OpenAI o3-mini-high, DeepSeek R1, and Claude 3.7 8K, all of which rely on far larger sizes and context lengths. In complex Sudoku puzzles and optimal pathfinding in 30x30 mazes, where state-of-the-art CoT methods completely fail, HRM delivers near-perfect accuracy.
With only about 1000 training examples, the HRM (~27M parameters) surpasses state-of-the-art CoT models on ARC-AGI, Sudoku-Extreme, and Maze-Hard*
The Sapient Intelligence team is already running new experiments and expects to publish even stronger ARC-AGI scores soon.
Real-World Impact
HRM's data efficiency and reasoning accuracy open new opportunities in fields where large datasets are scarce yet accuracy is critical. In healthcare, Sapient is partnering with leading medical research institutions to deploy HRM to support complex diagnostics, particularly rare-disease cases where data signals are sparse, subtle, and demand deep reasoning. In climate forecasting, HRM raises subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) forecasting accuracy to 97 %, a leap that translates directly into social and economic value. In robotics, HRM's low-latency, lightweight architecture serves as an on-device 'decision brain,' enabling next-generation robots to perceive and act in real time within dynamic environments.
Path Forward
Sapient Intelligence believes that HRM presents a viable alternative to the currently dominant CoT reasoning models. It offers a practical path toward universally capable reasoning systems that rely on architecture, not scale, to push the frontier of AI and, ultimately, close the gap between today's models and true artificial general intelligence.

Ex-Google exec says AI is coming for your job — even if you're a podcaster, developer, or CEO

Mo Gawdat, the former chief business officer of Google X, has a stark message for white-collar professionals: artificial intelligence isn't just coming for entry-level work — it's coming for everyone, from software developers to CEOs to podcasters. In a Monday conversation on the "Diary of a CEO" podcast, Gawdat predicted that most knowledge workers will be replaced in the next decade and that many still underestimate just how rapidly this transformation will unfold. He cited his own startup, which builds emotional and relationship-focused artificial intelligence and is run by just three people. "That startup would have been 350 developers in the past," he said. "As a matter of fact, podcaster is going to be replaced," he told host Steven Bartlett. Even elite professionals shouldn't feel immune. "AGI is going to get better at everything than humans — at everything, including being a CEO," he said. "The onething they don't think of is AI will replace them, too." Gawdat, who previously worked for Google X, the tech firm's research arm, described the present moment as a brief transition phase — the "era of augmented intelligence" — where humans can still work alongside AI. But that will soon give way to "machine mastery," where AI systems will perform entire roles, from assistants to architects. The former Google X executive said he's not anti-AI. He said he's actively working to build ethical systems that reflect human values like love and connection. But he warned that AI is being deployed by people and institutions driven by profit and ego, not ethics. "Unless you're in the top 0.1%, you're a peasant," Gawdat said. "There is no middle class." He predicted a "short-term dystopia" beginning around 2027, driven by mass unemployment, social unrest, and an economic structure that fails to adapt. Still, he said, a better future, one filled with freedom, creativity, and human connection, is possible. "We were never made to wake up every morning and just occupy 20 hours of our day with work," he said. "We defined our purpose as work — that's a capitalist lie." "But the truth is it could be the best world ever," he said. "The society completely full of laughter and joy. Free healthcare, no jobs, spending more time with their loved ones. A world where all of us are equal." In a 2023 episode of the same podcast, Gawdat went even further: AI is "beyond an emergency," he said. "It's the biggest thing we need to do today. It's bigger than climate change, believe it or not." At the time, he called on governments to tax AI-powered businesses at 98% to slow the industry demand and fund the support systems needed for people who will be displaced. "The likelihood of something incredibly disruptive happening within the next two years that can affect the entire planet is definitely larger with AI than it is with climate change," Gawdat said. Microsoft, Nvidia, and Meta push back on doomsday AI predictions Not everyone shares Gawdat's apocalyptic forecast for AI. A July study by Microsoft researchers found that AI chatbots are more useful for assisting with tasks involving research, writing, and communication — not replacing entire jobs. Other experts remain divided. Geoffrey Hinton, the so-called "Godfather of AI," has echoed Gawdat's concern, warning that AI will "replace everybody" doing "mundane intellectual labor." Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicted half of entry-level white-collar jobs could vanish within five years. But Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang disagreed. He believes AI will reshape how work is done, not eliminate it — calling prompting AI a "highly cognitive skill" and describing AI as "the greatest technology equalizer." Meta's chief AI scientist, Yann LeCun, has also dismissed doomsday predictions, saying he " pretty much disagrees with everything Dario says" and believes humans will remain the "boss" of future AI systems.

Shares of Meta are up 32% on a YTD basis, and it boasts a market cap of about $1.8 trillion. Meta Posts a Blowout Q2 Meta's spending spree on high-profile hires and capex rollout to build its AI capabilities would make one think that it is coming at the expense of the company's financials. The reality is far from that. In the past 10 years, Meta's revenue and earnings have compounded at annual growth rates of 28.85% and 37.25%, respectively. Moreover, it has reported an earnings beat in each of the past nine quarters, including the latest Q2. In Q2 2025, Meta reported revenues of $47.5 billion, up 22% from the previous year. Core advertising revenues continued to drive overall topline growth, coming in at $46.6 billion, which marked a yearly rise of 21.5%. Earnings witnessed an even sharper yearly growth of 38% to $7.14 per share, well ahead of the consensus estimate of $5.92 per share. Encouragingly, operating margins improved as well to 43% from 38% in the year-ago period. Daily active people (DAP) and average price per ad rose by 6% to 3.48 billion and 9%, respectively. Net cash from operating activities increased by 32% from the previous year to $25.6 billion. However, free cash flow dropped to $8.55 billion from $10.9 billion in the prior year. The decline in cash flows should not be seen as a negative, instead it is transient and is a sign of the company's huge spending on data center infrastructure and hiring, which will ultimately drive growth in the future. For Q3, the management projects revenue to be in the range of $47.5 billion to $50.5 billion, the midpoint of which would denote yearly growth of 20.7%. Further, analysts are forecasting the company to report earnings of $6.49 per share compared to $6.03 per share in the year-ago period. Poised to Dominate the Consumer AI Space Meta's most compelling asset is its deeply ingrained presence globally, primarily via its flagship platforms WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. This characteristic starkly differentiates the company from other hyperscalers such as Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon (AMZN), and Google (GOOGL), all of whom, despite their commitments to AI, remain primarily focused on enterprise solutions. Notably, Meta maintains a completely integrated, proprietary ecosystem, serving a staggering 3.5 billion active users, and concurrently operates what stands as the world's most extensive end-to-end AI-focused advertising platform. Equipped with these formidable resources, Meta's vision for personal superintelligence, its ambition to construct AI agents tailored for individuals, gives it a distinct competitive edge and unlocks an addressable market of truly gargantuan proportions. Furthermore, Meta finds itself in a unique position to monetize artificial intelligence without necessitating significant additional expenditure. In fact, the company is already leveraging AI to generate revenue within its foundational business activities, including the precision of its advertising, the efficacy of its user targeting, and the insightful analysis of consumer behavior. This ongoing monetization is occurring simultaneously with the development of its underlying AI infrastructure, largely obviating the need to re-engineer existing systems, a direct benefit derived from its Llama3 large language model. Analysts are unsurprisingly projecting industry-beating growth rates for Meta with forward revenue and earnings growth rates pegged at 16.82% and 24.60% compared to the sector medians of 3.47% and 12.73%, respectively. Analyst Opinions on META Stock Overall, analysts have given a consensus rating of 'Strong Buy' for META stock, with a mean target price of $757.98. This is slightly below its current trading price. Out of 54 analysts covering the stock, 45 have a 'Strong Buy' rating, three have a 'Moderate Buy' rating, five have a 'Hold' rating, and one has a 'Strong Sell' rating.
