Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp offers touching message after ex-player Diogo Jota's death
Klopp, who coached Jota for four seasons at Liverpool, said Thursday he was 'heartbroken' by the news.
'This is a moment where I struggle! There must be a bigger purpose! But I can't see it!' Klopp posted on Instagram. 'I'm heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother Andre.

'Diogo was not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father! We will miss you so much! All my prayers, thoughts and power to [Diogo's wife] Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them! Rest in peace — Love.'

Jota and Silva, also a professional soccer player, were found dead after their car went off a road on a highway in Zamora, a province in northwest Spain.

The 28-year-old Jota, from Portugal, joined Liverpool in 2020, playing under Klopp until the manager left the team in May 2024.
Before Liverpool, Jota played for Wolves (2017-21) and Portuguese teams Paços (2014-16) and Porto (2016-17).

Current Liverpool manager Arne Slot spoke on the tragedy as well, calling the accident an 'unimaginable loss.'

'What to say? What can anyone say at a time like this when the shock and the pain is so incredibly raw? I wish I had the words but I know I do not,' Slot said in a statement Thursday.
'All I have are feelings that I know so many people will share about a person and a player we loved dearly and a family we care so much about.'

Slot coached Jota for the 2024-25 season, during which Liverpool won the Premier League title.
'My first thoughts are not those of a football manager,' Slot continued. 'They are of a father, a son, a brother and an uncle and they belong to the family of Diogo and Andre Silva who have experienced such an unimaginable loss.'

All the laughs we had off the pitch and trying to find ways to wind milly (teammate James Milner) up and get him fined, which we never could," the England midfielder wrote on Instagram. "Taking pictures of me asleep on the bus travelling then sending them to me later. You always wanted to have a laugh and were a pleasure to be around." Mourners gathered at a wake in Portugal, ahead of the brothers' funeral at 10am local time on Saturday. Portuguese prime minister Luis Montenegro, Porto president Andre Villas-Boas, Portuguese football federation president Pedro Proenca and Jota's longtime agent Jorge Mendes joined the brothers' family including Jota's wife Rute Cardoso, who had married the footballer just weeks earlier, at a private wake in the brothers' home town of Gondomar in northern Portugal. "It is a moment of great pain for the family, who are left anchored to this tragic accident," Proenca said as he left the wake. "Diogo was an icon for the talent that Portuguese football represents and for its ability to generate unity around a person." Liverpool, who are supporting Jota's family, have opened a book of condolence, both physical in the Anfield Road Stand and online, lowered flags to half-mast and closed all stores and the museum and suspended all tours until Monday. Fans continue to leave flowers, scarves and shirts outside Anfield and there are similar scenes at Wolves' Molineux Stadium, where Jota spent three years before his move to Liverpool. Jota was also remembered at Wimbledon as two Portuguese players wore a black ribbon on their all-white attire during their matches. The All England Club has a strict dress code for players while on court but permission to wear the ribbon was granted. Nuno Borges, who at No. 37 is Portugal's highest-ranked tennis player, attached a ribbon to his hat for his third-round match against Karen Khachanov on No.3 Court. Francisco Cabral wore a black ribbon on his left sleeve during a doubles match.

Mets' Buttó goes on 15-day injured list with unspecified illness. Senga to make rehab start Saturday
NEW YORK (AP) — New York Mets reliever José Buttó was put on the 15-day injured list Friday with an unspecified illness. 'We're not going to get into the details of it out of respect of Buttó, but we don't anticipate this being a long term,' Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'We expect him to be back right after the All-Star break.' Mendoza said he didn't anticipate that Buttó will need to go on a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment. A 27-year-old right-hander, Buttó is 2-1 with a 2.47 ERA in 31 relief appearances, the last a two-inning outing at Pittsburgh last Saturday. WASHINGTON (AP) — Trevor Story homered and drove in four runs as part of a four-hit day, Lucas Giolito pitched 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball in his first game against the team that drafted him and the Boston Red Sox routed the Washington Nationals 11-2 on Friday. Jarren Duran had three RBIs for Boston, which collected 16 hits and has won four of six since enduring a season-worst six-game skid.
