Search for Asha Degree: New search on property formerly owned by Roy Dedmon, records show
On Friday, Queen City News was there as investigators searched an old, abandoned school at the corner of Highway 274 and NC-182 in Lincoln County.
Detectives and SBI agents wrapped up their search Friday, not revealing what they found.
Past search warrants reveal that investigators believe Degree was killed, her death may have been concealed, and her body has never been found.

The masses came out to search on Friday.
'I think they're putting a lot of pressure out there to get answers,' said Donnie Peeler, a neighbor.
Investigators won't stop until they find the girl known as 'Shelby's Sweetheart.'
'You can't go anywhere in Cleveland County without somebody talking about the case,' said Peeler.
Peeler and Dale Champion, another neighbor, remember the day 25 years ago on Valentine's Day when Degree went missing.
'We were on our way to work early that morning,' said Peeler.
'We went through the roadblock that morning and actually thought it was a license check, but they were looking for a little girl,' said Champion.
Degree's disappearance has captured everyone's hearts.
No one can fully grasp what her family is going through.
'Oh, I don't know if I'd been able to, to be honest,' said Michael Owens.
Neighbors like Owens have been showing up every time investigators search.
'I just hope and pray that they will find her, whoever knows what happened to her, just come clean and tell the truth,' Owens said, on the verge of tears.
Owens was out last September when deputies and the FBI scoured the properties of Roy and Connie Dedmon in Cleveland County.
Detectives indicated later in search warrants that they did those searches because they believe Roy and Connie Dedmon may have helped conceal Degree's death.
An attorney for Roy Dedmon denies his client had anything to do with Degree's death or disappearance.
Friday's search was also tied to property formerly owned by the Dedmons.
Records show Dedmon bought the property, an old school, in 1991 and sold it in October 2004, just over four years after Degree disappeared, leaving the community stunned.
'You just can't move on from it,' said Peeler.
Neighbors believe detectives are getting closer to finding Degree.
'Her family can have peace and Cleveland County, and the rest of the counties around here can have peace,' said Owens.

Jenny Gore Burton, 49, was last seen leaving her office on Ballantyne Village Way. Vicious burglars and break-in gangs are using cutting-edge technology to pull off nefarious heists — and even celebs like Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman and Keanu Reeves aren't safe. A spate of home invasions, crafty break-ins and the recent tragic double-murder of 'American Idol' music supervisor Robin Kaye and her husband Thomas Deluca inside their Encino home, at the hands of an apparent robber, have Hollywood on high alert. No number of cameras and alarm systems are enough to outwit the gangs, according to one pro. In 2017, Kendall Jenner had hundreds of thousands of dollars of jewelry stolen from her, in what was reported to be an inside job. 'I have retired police cars,' said Herzog, maintaining his cars are near identical to the real thing. 'Nobody is afraid of a security guard. But if there's a police car sitting there? The bad guys say that they don't want to get shot. And if the cop presses one button, there's going to be 100 other cops from all different directions. Criminals don't want to trade freedom or their lives for getting money out of a house.' In 2025, Herzog maintained, anything less than a uniformed cop in the driveway and 'celebrities are easy targets because the word is out, they make [bad] security decisions.'

'We're not just housing people,' Mecklenburg County Jail hosts dinner to reduce stigma around inmates
CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — For the first time in the county, local food enthusiasts ate dinner with inmates at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center. On Thursday, July 24, more than 30 members of Charlotte Foodies ate dinner with inmates in what's being called the 'Incarcerated Dinner.' Officials said the goal of the evening was to dismantle the stigma and humanize those in jail. The foodies reportedly didn't know they were dining with people who were incarcerated, as everyone was wearing a Charlotte Foodie shirt to create a shared space without bias or judgment. 'This wasn't just a meal. It was a movement,' Dorian Johnson, MCSO Programs Director, said. 'The idea was to create an experience where the person comes before the perception. By removing labels and sharing a table, we saw genuine connection, curiosity, and compassion. This is what rehabilitation begins to look like.' The dinner featured a five-course meal prepared by Chef Erick Crawford, a formerly incarcerated culinary artist who now runs his own food business in Davidson. The menu included: Shrimp and pimento grits with beef sausage crumble and salsa verde Pickled deviled eggs with crispy turkey bacon and crushed Flamin' Hot Cheetos Hibachi ramen stir-fry Smoked prime rib brushed with pineapple soy glaze, served with mashed sweet potatoes State-cake with honeybun layers and tang citrus cream 'As someone in recovery, this experience hit home. Too often, people who've made mistakes arewritten off, but this dinner challenged that narrative,' Chef Erick said. 'I went from recovery to owning an award-winning food truck, and now a brick-and-mortar restaurant and catering business. There is a path forward, one built on hard work, faith, and community. The reactions on people's faces said it all: joy, connection, dignity. That's what this dinner delivered.' Sheriff McFadden has been adamant about changing the culture within the detention center and reducing the jail's recidivism rate. 'This dinner represents what's possible when we lead with vision, not fear,' Sheriff McFadden said. 'I want Mecklenburg County to be a model for how detention centers can become places of healing, learning, and transformation. We're not just housing people; we're preparing them to return to the community stronger than when they arrived.' The music program is part of a larger effort to provide voluntary, rehabilitative opportunities to inmates. Sheriff McFadden emphasized that these programs are not to determine guilt or innocence, but to offer support and structure for those willing to engage in change. The sheriff's office said plans are underway to host more dinners and other events designed to change public perception and 'give residents the dignity they deserve on their path forward.'
